The second half is pretty self-explanatory: a man who has fallen in love with a dancer/prostitute and they had a falling out. But the first half, which I find much more interesting, seems to be about a loss of essence. When he sings "the jewel of Africa - what good is a jewel that ain't still precious?", it reminds me of losing what makes this woman beautiful. She's been tainted, perhaps by the profession or the world she lives in, and has lost her sparkle and her essence. "Sending the cheetahs to the tomb" would be trying to find her in her "final resting place" aka a strip club/some motel/etc. Anyway. Love this song. |

Love this song so much. It's recently become one of my favourites. I think it's about a relationship that the singer wishes would come to fruition. She might not be as interested as he is, but he really wishes she were so they could be together for longer. Either way, he's happy to have her stay with him for as long as she will. He's also willing to be used, in a sense, assuming that she only calls him when she needs him. I love when he sings "but for goodness sake, will my love not be enough?" as if he loves her as much as she can while she's not into it or can't love him back the same way. It's very bittersweet. |

I think this song is about the turbulence of being in love when you're young. Always falling in and out of love, but not really knowing what it is. And the chorus - I love the chorus - talks about how "love" or your infatuation/idea of "love" tricks you into feeling a certain way, but it's more like a reaction than anything. It's like "wow, he has nice eyes, and he's smart, and tall - I love him <3" but it's not real love, it's more like a reaction of attraction to someone who has these qualities that you like. Doesn't mean it's love. This is my favourite track off his new album. I love the whole CD but this song made me buy the album. Love Mika. <3 |

I like this song a lot. A lot, a lot. The one line that stuck out to me was "Are 5 kids better than one?" simply because, as a middle child, I feel like I know what he means by that. Sucks being the middle of five kids. In bigger families, parents tend to think that they pay attention to all kids equally but it really isn't true. It's not their fault, though. With the amount of kids, it's impossible to split their time evenly. With this line, I think it's more like if it was just him and his mom/dad/whoever, then they'd understand him more, but they don't because of the amount of siblings he has. It also goes back to the tradition thing. A lot of families with strong traditional backgrounds, no matter the culture, have more children because it's been the accepted thing or the norm. To the traditional parent, 5 kids is better than one because kids symbolize wealth and happiness, etc. But to the modern child, it isn't. |
