All really good theories, but I've seen them in concert 5 (glorious) times. Colin Meloy, the lead singer, explained that this song was about when his wife (then girlfriend), Carson's, father died and they had to go up to Grace Cathedral Hill in LA for the funeral which was on New Years of all days. There they were in this beutiful old church and she was (as can be expected) in this horribley sad mood (all piss and vinegar) and he was just falling more and more in love. |

The narrator is on the phone with an ex girlfriend, one whose departure was the pint in his life where he realized what a meaningless, small town existence he was leading, and he's suddenly realizing that she's escaped and made a great life and never looked back while he's still just a bird in a cage that isn't even guilded anymore. Do yourself these favors: 1.) Pick up the single for Fighting in a Sack, it features a live version of this song done with Iron & Wine that is just incredible 2.) Go back to page one and read an entry by someone named StarClaire(who sounds almost freakishly intelligent), she seems not only to have nailed it, but I think the song hit a little close to home for her. |
