The lyrics of "Applebite" basically suggest that people live and then die, and the cycle repeats forever. What I think Cornell is talking about in the verse where "Applebite" is referenced is that no matter how much you know and no matter what you do in life, we all wind up at the same place/state. |

| Audioslave – Sound of a Gun Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I'm definitely with forthelove on this one. I just don't catch the terrorism/war interpretation. To me, I see it as someone recounting their experiences of living and raising a family in their home town/city. The place they grew up in was once majestic and beautiful, but as of late it has begun to deteriorate and succomb to violence. "In the here and now I'll wait Down among the young and the old" (A man is living within a city, he is neither naive nor wise.) "With the moon and the ground I play With my children in my home" (He is able to raise a family in comfort. These two lines juxtapose what is about to be said about the less fortunate. This draws attention to the fact that not everyone is as lucky as he is, and people around the country are in need of help morally, financially, and socially.) "This is for the daughters and sons Of forgotten ones" (Children/people of the city whose parents have passed away due to violence and crime) "Learning how to stand" (These children must grow up without a parental figure, and learn to be independent by themselves) "This is for the innocent unknowns Buried in the sand" (Innocent unknowns are the people who continue to live but go unnoticed, uncared for. I don't take the sand literally, but rather I see it as a product of a deteriorating city. Basically, They are stuck in the city that they live in.) "All running from the sound of a gun Running from the sound of a gun 'till you're weary Running from the sound of a gun Running from the sound of a gun" (These children become involved in violence, or violence surrounds them in their daily life and they have no choice but to "run and hide") "From the crack in the blackness I'll wake It's getting closer every night" (Violence is creeping into his neighborhood? And he worries for his children.) "In my city the playground is a battleground Between the wrong and the right" (The city he had memories of once being a playground is now filled with gang wars, violence, and crime.) "I could run free as a child I was safe and wild Naked, and unarmed" (He was once able to roam the city without fear) "Now I'm gone and safe in my home But some will never stop" (As an adult, he is able to live in a safe area, however not everyone is so lucky. they are forced into ghettos, poorer projects, etc.) "The open mouth of the city Swallowed up the town" (Over the years, as population expanded, poorer people were forced into this area of the city. Thus, the wealthy/upper class stopped caring about the area, and it began to fall apart.) "On that same old concrete That I still walk down And it seemed they put a shine On this place when I was young Well maybe I just don't see it now" (Walking down the streets, he sees that the city has changed for the worse. In the past, it was a beautiful, thriving area. Now it has fallen apart and faded. |

| Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Like JANDOSON above me, I Interpret this song to be about seclusion from the outside world, depression, and Cornell's own experience with confining himself to his house. To me, this "Black Hole Sun" is not a physical star, or a symbol for some apocalyptic ending, but rather a "black hole" _son_. I see this song as a fictional story of a child, whose depression or fear of the outside world, causes him to lock himself within his room, secluding himself from his friends and family. In a sense, I see this as a darker version of "Dear Prudence" by the Beatles, although very different in meaning. "In my eyes, indisposed" Could have multiple meanings. The boy is reluctant to see the rest of society, and confines himself to his room. Or his eyes could be going bad >< "In disguise as no one knows Hides the face, lies the snake" The boy secludes himself from everyone else in his room where he can't be seen or bothered. The line about "in disguise as no one knows" could hint that his family doesn't realize he his not coming out or that he has even locked himself in his room. They might not care? "The sun in my disgrace Boiling heat, summer stench 'Neath the black the sky looks dead" These lines refer to how the boy sees the rest of the world. He is most likely depressed and doesn't view society in a positive manner. "Call my name through the cream And I'll hear you scream again" I like to think that these lines refer to a family member(s) calling out to the boy, asking him to come out from his seclusion. "Black hole sun Won't you come And wash away the rain Black hole sun Won't you come Won't you come" This is his family's plea to the boy. He is the "black hole son", and the black hole is his room, and can also reflect his immense depression - It swallows him in, and doesn't allow him to leave. This is also where I made the connection between this song and "Dear Prudence". I'm still sketchy about the line about the rain, but I think that the rain represents the sadness that the boy's disappearance has brought to the family and they obviously miss him at this point. "Stuttering, cold and damp Steal the warm wind tired friend Times are gone for honest men And sometimes far too long for snakes In my shoes, a walking sleep And my youth I pray to keep Heaven send Hell away No one sings like you anymore" I'm really unable to interpret these lines :/ I don't even know where to start. "Hang my head, drown my fear Till you all just disappear" The boy is even deeper in his depression now. He shrugs off the weight of the world and "drowns" his fears (of growing up? or just the future in general?)away, and continues to look upon the world in a negative light. He still doesn't care for his family or society, and wished everyone would all just disappear. I think most of us have all wished for this once in our life :] "Hang my head" Suicide thoughts? I doubt it, but it's possible. Anyways, I don't believe that my interpretation is even remotely close to what Cornell was thinking when he wrote the song, but I want to put it out anyways. |

Are you guys sure that the lyrics are "She lived like a murder"? It sounds to me like "She lived like a martyr". I also think that this line is much more fitting. "She lived like a martyr How she'd fly so sweetly" To some people, dying as a matryr is the ultimate act of devotion to a cause, and could be seen as a beautiful act. I think that Chris must have seen this marvelous bird flying as if it knew it was going to die, but continued on anyways. "She lived like a martyr But she dies Just like suicide" The bird obviously had no cause. It simply broke its neck and was killed mercifully by Chris. In the end, it's death was just another tragedy, just like suicide. |

Good song, but I can't tell whether it is "Everyday's another phase" or "Everyday's another face" I want to say it is "Everyday's another face" because of the lyrics in The Meaning in Makeup... But whatever. |

I always felt that it had to do with asking a special someone to be your girlfriend or boyfriend. "I think I'm going for it this time. There's something you should listen to." "Oh no, I think I've lost this one. Can we try again? " "Are you looking for an answer?" |
