Wilco – Handshake Drugs Lyrics

All good comments. I read the chorus as a plea to the public (his fans, etc.) -- it begins as a solo man getting his fix and then as an anthem of his persona; being defined by others -- Conor Oberst's songs tread on this kind of ground. |

Wilco – Blasting Fonda Lyrics

The last line is definitely "blasting fonda on the news" -- a Vietnam "Hanoi Jane" reference -- someone shouting pointlessly at the world. |

ay, ay madhatter. I had never even heard of M.Ward until I saw him do this with Conor on ACL. Luckily, I had the show taped. I think I rewound and watched it 15 times...just unbelievable. |

Okkervil River – Kansas City Lyrics

"Walking down Ellum/turning down main/trying to find someone to sell her cocaine" is an old Rev. Gary Dayis lyrics from "Cocaine". Kansas City is considered the birthplace of much of the electric blues movement -- these two are not coincidences. I think the girl wants to immerse herself in history/heritage that isn't her -- a romanticized past. |

Okkervil River – Yellow Lyrics

This is as straightforward as it gets. There's not a single metaphor in it, which for a brililant song, is nearly impossible. This song is about directness. I can't imagine anyone liking the song and missing that. |

Okkervil River – Song of Our So-Called Friend Lyrics

I think Sheff's songs resist easy "meaning". All of you sound right, but sometimes his songs are dominated by language itself, not its meaning. The opening line alone is proof of that. |

The Mountain Goats – Idylls of the King Lyrics

Gee, I don't know, but this thing is fucking brilliant.
The first verse is "lined up" as in hunting, the second is "lined up" as in harmony, the last one is "lined up" as in ready to be taken down (her, his neuroses, etc.) |

Okkervil River – Seas Too Far to Reach Lyrics

You're all right, but the last verse clearly is a man trying to get a girl to fuck him.
He uses like, explorer and sailor, metaphors.
SHE is the undiscovered country. |
