The Wrens – Boys You Won't Lyrics 19 years ago
Wrens being self-referential. Most of this album is about how they fought back tooth-and-nail to keep their artistic integrity. This is about their fight to make a name for themselves, it seems. Time after time they're forgotten, these "Boys you won't remember", and many times "they're knocked down" but they keep going, trying to make a name for themselves.

The Wrens – Everyone Choose Sides Lyrics 19 years ago
Wrens are being self-refential again it seems. The song is about how they gave up the chance to be superstars for their artistic integrity. If you read up on the Wrens, that's pretty much what happened.

Beulah – Gravity's Bringing Us Down Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is actually a guy singing about how much he hates gravity. Am I crazy in thinking this?

Either way, it's a great song, and I can't help but I dance when I hear those opening bars.

Beulah – Popular Mechanics For Lovers Lyrics 19 years ago
to answer your question, noiseeeshoes, the band Magnetic Fields made a series of CDs which consisted of 69 Love Songs (or so they said, they were just about some of the craziest and stragest love songs ever put to CD).

The song's great, very funny throughout. I always can't help but laugh when he sings "I've tried awful hard to find some songs that would make you mine. But all I ever find my love is cliches that don't rhyme."

Dogs Die in Hot Cars – Somewhat Off The Way Lyrics 19 years ago
It almost seems a letter to an old teacher. The teacher had such high hopes for the student, but he didn't turn out the way the teacher had planned. This seems to be the students explaining to the teacher that he really wanted to do better, and that he's not beyond all hope quite yet.

Dogs Die in Hot Cars – Glimpse At The Good Life Lyrics 19 years ago
I always figured it means that too much focus is put on to the physical things, and that those with more physical goods think that those with less are lesser for not "living it living it well".

Dogs Die in Hot Cars – Godhopping Lyrics 19 years ago
I always figured it was a song about a guy who jumps from religion to religion trying to find happiness wherever he can. The first verse refers to judaism (tiny little hats), second Hinduism or Islam (veils and perfume), and the first part of the chorus refers to his dislike of agonsticism (indecision only brings no joy).

Okkervil River – The War Criminal Rises and Speaks Lyrics 19 years ago
Great song. I too love the last sarcastic lines of the lines "don't worry he won't rise up behind your eyes and take wild control." I snicker everytime.

Okkervil River – The Velocity of Saul at the Time of His Conversion Lyrics 19 years ago
My all-time favorite okkervil river song, and one of my favorite songs of all time. I always felt it was about a man whom god has blessed who's had too much of the whole "holy man" thing. With all the repetitions of "Enough of "the fright", enough "you and I", enough of "prevail" or "walk in the light", I got the inclination that he's grown tired of it all and wants to just live a normal life, as seen in the "I wonder with my head in my hands, should I call my wife?"

Okkervil River – It Ends with a Fall Lyrics 19 years ago
This song just always reminded me of a situation where you're falling in love with your best friend. This case in particular seems like he's falling in love with his roommate. The jealousy and saying that no one is good enough for the person, and, the ending itself speaks to how such closeness always "ends with a fall." In others words, he can't help falling in love with her, even though he knows he shouldn't.

The song spoke to me so much, and I can't help but cry so many times I listen to it. It's one of my favorite Okkervil River songs
