| The Smiths – Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now Lyrics

i love the offsetting of the totally depressing, miserable lyrics and the exuberant, pretty music. amazing. the song that got me into the smiths... the 'caligula' line just made me laugh out loud the first time i heard it. |

why has no one commented on this song? it's my favorite off of 'coming home', especially the group singalong towards the end.
as far as interpretation goes, i think it's about being involved with someone and not really knowing how they feel about you. |

i think the song can be interpreted like this: the protagonist is really in love with the girl (typical nfg, obviously). they have a conversation about relationships, and something is bothering her about her relationship ('a sense of heat i couldn't bear to touch'), but that something isn't her fault. 'staring in seclusion' could be alluding to the protagonist's growing relationship with this girl, and her face 'wrapper for a suitor' means that she's putting on some kind of front around the person she's having a problem with. the second 'sense of heat' is the two of them just growing closer together. she can't really make up her mind about who she wants to be with, and the protagonist is so in love with her that he's 'under her downpour', waiting for her regardless.
btw. chad is the one who wrote most of the songs on this record i believe. |

'suedehead' is a morrissey solo song, not a smiths song.
that said, the lyrics towards the beginning of the song kind of remind me of november spawned a monster |
