I don't think this song is necessarily critical of all religion, but of fundamentalism.
I think when Brock is saying "who would want to be such a control freak" he's implying that if there is a God, he's not like that. He doesn't control things the way we humans think of it, because he's obviously not a human. |

Dispatch – Walk With You Lyrics

I always felt this song was about wanting to be with someone more than anything else in the world but knowing that your time with them was limited.
Like, "we only have so much time but let's walk under the stars and know how beautiful the time we had together was."---'we'll light the candles now they won't be lit for long/we'll know our day was blessed'
Although that may just be me relating it to my own experience. |

well... it is a theatre warm-up, they probably got it from that
I think it's kind of doubtful that the theatre warm-up originated from the song... |

yeah, I kinda figured it was the other lover was also a man because it says "you belong to the gang"
and I figured that "O Valencia" was a reference to the city/place |

Sufjan Stevens – Jason Lyrics

Yes: It is inspired by the Greek hero Jason.
That does not mean that it's not homoerotic.
Besides, you don't get much more homoerotic than Greek mythology. |

Oh, definitely. As I Christian myself, I actually like a lot of his religious messages.
But I also believe in the unity of faiths. Incarnation does not have to specifically relate to Jesus, especially since Jesus was an incarnation that has already passed on this earth. |

Sufjan Stevens – Joy! Joy! Joy! Lyrics

About the lyrics:
I heard the line "I would serve the Kingdom's will" as "I would send the Kingdom's field." I know that doesn't make much sense, but I'm pretty sure that's what it says.
Also: The section "I believe in (page)
Believe in (page)
Believe in (page)
Believe in (page)"
I think he's saying marriage instead of page.
The empty "name" sounds kinda like Cher, although I don't think that's it. Sherriff? Sheryl?
And I think the part where you said single book is actually "syllable." |

Interesting, this song seems to share the characteristic of an extremely bitter break-up with the song "Jason." Except with both, it's man he's speaking to. |

Sounds like a bitter break-up to me. Sufjan has got to be asking for gay rumors when he writes songs like this... |

I love the part that says, "Will you tell us when to live, will you tell us when to die?"
I think it's referencing that when country's start wars, they are essentially sending their young people off to die. |

I love the short story that goes with this song on the michigan site. Read it, if you haven't.
To me, this song does have christian undertones, but just the right kind of them. The idea of loving your neighbor and doing anything for them are some of my favorite ideas from christianity, and I think that's what this song is about. |

Sufjan Stevens – The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us! Lyrics

Um, I apologize if this sounds like a personal affront, but how often do you kiss your best friend of the same sex to apologize to them? If it's a metaphor for an apology, it's extremely bizarre, and I think Sufjan (he has an MFA in creative writing) knows what metaphors are effective and which ones aren't.
Plus, the "we were in love" and the falling asleep and the car are just too romantic sounding. So I think either Sufjan is writing from a woman's perspective; or this song is really about some sort of feelings between two boys. Regardless of whether Sufjan himself is gay or not, in his music he empathizes with all sorts of people, and I don't see why he couldn't empathize with gays just as easily as anyone else. |

I think this song is definitely about the incarnation of god on earth, but I'd be careful of just saying "it's Jesus." Nearly every religion in the world is waiting for an incarnation of god to come. For example, Judaism awaits the messiah, Christianity awaits the second coming of the messiah, Hinduism is awaiting the final avatar (incarnation of vishnu) that will mark this end of this universe.
I mean, yes, it's about a divine incarnation, but I think that Sufjan Stevens is very aware of other religions as well, and I hate it when Christians (note: I am a christian) try to "claim" songs. |

Obviously, it's true that this song can be interpreted anyway you want, but I'd just like to say I doubt it has anything to do with death.
And also, as a "gay" person myself, I'd just like to point out that this song, to me, is clearly about romantic love between two boys. The gestures, like the hand on the back while kissing, and falling asleep in the car ring true to me. I don't know for sure, but I think this song sums up what it feels like to be in love with a person of the same gender. |
