this song is way too sad. each time i listen to it i feel weaker its abt being absolutely powerless to ur life. nothings within ur control, not even u urself. and u start to feel disappointed in urself bcos of the vy instinctive protective measures that u r unable to perform for urself. the freedom in ur brain is the most dangerous weapon. this is abt depression. i had been there. and theres no song out there that illustrates it so well as this one does. |

it really soothes me reading all ur comments here bcos im undergoing a similar situation where my bf is being an asshole while i try every effort to restore our relationship. i agree wif wt everyones saying here only theres one new insight that came up to me today when i listen to it again, 'do you have to, do you have to let it linger?' all of us had been or are being foolishly loyal, are our partners the only ones who r lingering the relationship?? it is sad but it came to me that i am the one whos trying to let the relationship linger. y cant i be the one to call it the break? similarly the persona in this song, well, the guy wants it to linger by lying to the girl yet at the same time hes giving her all the signs, no? holding another girls hand, giving her the attitude... do you have to let it linger.. and do I have to let it linger?? this song means much to me esp when we went to see Click together and hes leaving me behind bcos of work. thx everyone for your sharing. |

the meaning behind this simple. this song was written when the band was on tour, and its about how dolores thinks of her family when she is "out there". i think it speaks to anyone whos working or studying abroad, or simply cannot have time to spend with their family. and once the kds start working or your abroad etc theyd stop giving this beautiful song weird explanations. |

i just have to disagree with stupid_name however awesome a book like The God of Small Things is. clearly The God of Small Things is a postcolonial literature, and Tonight Toight is about nothing postcolonial. And of the successful attempt that Roy has made in overwhelming the story with such delicate Indian flavour, the music and the words, and maybe the video if you like, of Tonight Tonight falls short to fit into the forbidden love of Ammu and Velutha in such a complex society. i have more reasons to disagree with you to have put Tonight Tonight in The God of Small Things, but im not gonna argue further. none of these beautiful individual works, Tonight Tonight and The God of Small Things, should be undermined simply due to the lack of comparative ground between them. i didnt mean to write all that. i just want to say that i enjoy reading what all have been writing about the meaning of the song. to me it is about simply enjoying the moment. i suppose its the manifold that Tonight Tonight is capable of inspiring that makes `Tonight Tonight so graet` and so special a song |
