About her voice, which indeed is 'ahhhh' :D I love the way her voice has changed over the years, I mean, not by much, but it has gotten maybe a little deeper and fuller, and that's just...um, music to my ears :D As for the meaning of the song, I think it's a feminist statement. I could explain why I think so, but I'm kind of tired right now, it would be a long explanation, and probably not that many people are even interested :P |

Yeah, I guess it's about someone you have such strong emotions for that they occasionally spill over from love to hate and back. |

There's this air of subdued beauty or something in the first few songs on 'Reprieve' that is almost too intense, and I think this is my favorite one of them. Can't say anything about the meaning right now since I'm kind of overwhelmed (listening to the song right now), sorry. |

I don't see this song as being about betrayal in a relationship. I think the song describes a relationship, that, while not perfect, is still something worth staying in. To me, the "i/you was/were no picninc" are a gently humorous look at the things that sometimes make you feel attracted to someone.
Actually, I think 'Imperfectly' is a sort of a 'sister song' to this one. |

Absolutety agree with maddsurgeon. I also think this song is perfect in the album context since there are very few 'song triplets' that are better than Second Intermission, Serpentine and Welcome To. Something amazing. |

When I heard this song, I almost immediately thought of 'Deeper Understanding' by Kate Bush, and how this song is in a way the same story, but from the point of view of the 'intervener' (if you can call that a word :P) |

I also think the song is referring to other bombings and war; there weren't that many tv's around at the time the Pearl Harbor attack happened. |

I just listened to this again after a while and it totally floored me; what a powerful song. I, too, see it as being about trying to go on after something devastating without really even being sure if anything's going to be alright again, but still having at least a shred of hope to hold on to. |

Actually, I don't necessarily understand the lyrics as an all-positive outlook on humanity. Already the song title gives suggests that to me. And turmoil and carnage probably aren't something many of us want.
The song also mentions muddy graves, morbid trenches and "grinding the skeptics into the soil". Plus there is the line "Forgive this tribe" which, at least the way I understand it, refers to the human race. The high-energy beat is also kind of aggressive.
Anyway, this is a great song, and if the rest of Volta is even anywhere near as good, it may well be the best album coming out this year. |

Seems some of Ani's songs/poems have a bad habit of bringing me to tears, this is one of them. Well, actually, it's not a bad thing at all :) Along with 'Animal', this is probably my favorite track on 'Educated Guess'.
Such powerful words about how the struggle for, as she puts it 'the better good' has been worth something and is worth continuing. If you aren't moved by lines like 'a raging river of tears cut a grand canyon of light', I don't know what it would take to move you. |

I have only recently discovered Ani's music. What a great songwriter. And what a great poet! I literally got tears in my eyes just from reading the poem. And then I found the MP3 on the Righteous Babe web site...stunning. The way she delivers it. The way the crowd responds...just stunning.
I think the meaning is pretty clear, so I won't go into that. I'll just say I agree with Ani one hundred percent. Don't know if this sounds a bit silly, but I, and I'm sure a lot of other people living outside the United States sometimes get pretty damn scared when we see the most powerful nation in the world abusing its power the ways it has. At times it seems the USA is all about the military-industrial complex.
But of course that's not the whole pictrue. Of course there are Americans 'fighting the good fight' against militarism, greed, injustice, intolerance, overuse of natural resources and so on. We need poems like these and people like Ani to remind us that in addition to being a big country, The United States and its people could and can also be great.
Sorry. Got a bit carried away there :) |
