Alkaline Trio – Dethbed Lyrics 19 years ago
Okay, I'm just gonna post my thoughts on this one because it seems to be in a different direction. I don't necessarily see the relationship in it... it's kinda different for me.

I think he was murdered, actually. The song seems to take the perspective of the killed and the ambulance or police who found him dead.

"Like a time bomb, a sudden death
It's gonna find you when you least expect
It's gonna leave you the emptiest feeling inside" - This obviously refers to how sudden a murder can be, and when "the west coast is far from clear," you'll have no suspects, thus "left with the emptiest feeling inside.

The killer is whoever he refers to as "you" in the song, and "They found me face down in the street
On the night you left to find another place to sleep
In rain and regret" is simply suspicion that "you" killed him, during some sort of break up. "In rain and regret" is beautiful imagery of how someone might feel if they killed somebody out of rage, and it sets a scene.

"Falling like stars into the ocean black, we're gonna disappear
And anything left recognisable is swept away with fear" - more wonderful imagery, nice simile in there. This is everybody leaving the murder scene, one-by-one, until all are gone.

"We got our hearts dipped in time release
We got the know-how and the elbow grease
We got our victim all cut up down here on the floor" - This is where people may have thought the love came in, but I think "we" here is talking from the perspective of the detectives, or ambulance. They refer to "our victim," so it can't be the victim talking. Either way, they have the know-how and the elbow grease to fix things up and find out who it is, and they've got a "cut up" (murdered!) body in front of them to study.

"They said they tried everything but it was no use
Yeah, they tried everything and everyone but you" - once again... but even with their "know-how," they didn't catch the killer. In fact, the killer was the only thing that WASN'T inspected, so he must have been killed by someone who'd be LAST expected to kill him... "it's gonna find you, when you least expect." ... yup.

And... well... that's pretty much what I thought of it since I first heard the song. Even if it's not the meaning, at least it's a pretty radical, neat step-aside from typical love-relationship interpretations. I tried. :)

Girls like bad guys, and he's playing bad guy to get her. But how much fun is that for a guy who wants a normal relationship like everybody else has? But the sex is so much fun, and she's so 'serious', how can he back out?

Maybe.

I agree with rhons... "This song is so awesome. I'm fairlly certain its about sort ofr a situation if Christ were here to day and how he would shake up the establishment."

It's something along those lines. Also notice how he sings: "You are the word, the word is 'destroy'." the Word referring to God.

The song is obvious for the most part, but can someone explain to me: "I need a bit of black and blue to be a rotation." Took me a week to even figure out what he was singing when I first got the CD, he says it so fast. What clever alliteration. What a clever band.
