Macy Gray – I Try Lyrics 16 years ago
You should all download the Ben Taylor version, it is so much better! Macy Gray's voice is so irritating, that it takes away from the lyrics. This is a really well-written song.

The Fray – You Found Me Lyrics 16 years ago
The beautiful thing about music is that the meaning of the song is up to the reader to interpret (it is apart of the Reader Response Theory). For some people this song is about God, for others it is about a partner or a friend. It doesn't matter, as long as it has meaning to you.

Eagles – Saturday Night Lyrics 18 years ago
Perhaps it’s a matter of perspective, but naturally I've taken a completely different take on the songs meaning. Firstly, it’s nearly impossible to give an interpretation of a song's true meaning, without being the writer. So, all interpretations are subjective. Particularly that of "individual delusion" who the song seems to have stricken a personal chord with.

1st stanza: In the 1st stanza, an image of bliss is painted between the two characters in the song. Love, happiness, and fulfillment are projected. Hence, the bluebird reference, who symbolizes all of these things in both literature and common mythology (old wives tales, the bluebird is an omen). From here we hear the chorus, a chorus of longing for something once familiar, but now lost. In the interpretation above, he suggests that this loss of Saturday night represents his loss of freedom to marriage. This does work, and fits quite nicely. As well, it could also represent a loss of innocence. Life has become fast pace and more stagnate, an environment difficult for love to flourish. Perhaps the writer is expressing distaste for industrialization, suggesting that it makes life cold, and loveless. A common thread among many people who oppose such a revolution. As well, its represents the changing times, with industrialization and the change in lifestyle. This would work well with the next stanza, which portrays a common image of this, the building of the railroad.

2nd stanza: We see the image of a railroad being built. The railroad brings death to the simple country life once enjoyed, changing small towns into busy, industrial, monopolies. Thus, the railroad destroys the simplicity & innocence of life, and the home in which they shared is boarded up. Now, as the small town life dies, so does their relationship. His woman is now with another man, and he spends the time with his pride. Pride shouldn't be regarded as a positive here. The singer has too much pride to take his woman back, suggesting the means of their break-up was petty.

3rd stanza: The singer portrays the situation has gotten out of control. The times when something is over, and you look back and wonder how it got so bad. The line "someone show me how to tell the dancer from the dance" is one of my favourites of the song. Essentially its means, what is the dancer without the dance? Nothing, just another member of the audience. The dance can represent many things, as it commonly does in music. It can represent their relationship (how can you separate the lover from the love), it can represent living (can you separate humans from their life). Thus, in my opinion, the dancer is the dance. We are our actions. At the end of the day, we are not judged on what we could have done, but what we did. We are judged on the life we lived, not the one we could have lived. The dance we danced. It’s a dilemma, how do you see past what someone does in their lives, to know the true person inside. Or do you judge them based on how they act, no matter what psychologically aspects are involved.

4th stanza: From here, the chorus appears once again. Unfortunately, I do not know what significance the line "choosin a friend and losing a fight” holds. However, it perpetuates this idea of the conflict between two people who share closeness.

Overall my interpretation is that the love that has died, representing the greater theme of the death to passion, life, and the vitality that people once had to the change of lifestyle. This change of circumstance, representing the greater change of life that occurred when the simplicity of life was interrupted by the need for wealth. And when business and work took seniority over happiness and people. The death of the love is just a parallel to the deeper loss of innocence that occurred when the world changed. Thus, the laid back Saturday night is now gone. Saturday has become a time to unwind from the work in solidarity. That's just what I took from it, and I'm sure some will think I'm entirely off. However, once again, interpretation is subjective, and should always remain that way.

Besides analyzing and entirely killing the effect of the song, I absolutely love this song! Its one of those songs that when you’re driving in the car, and even if people are around, you just can't help to sing along! Hope this interpretation helps, even though I should have put more thought into it. If there are any visible holes, comment and fix them.

Colin James – I'm Losing You Lyrics 18 years ago
Orignally a John Lennon song, Colin James re-made it in about 2003. My favourite version of "I'm Losing You". Very soulful, with alittle bit of a bluesy tone.

Eagles – Heartache Tonight Lyrics 18 years ago
One of my favourite eagles song! I'm disappointed by the lack of posting on this song. I thought this would be more popular then some of the other ones. Anyways, I think its about people getting together, going out, having few, and wanting to get laid. But at the end of the evening, everyone goes home hurt cause there's no satisfaction in one-night stands.

Fleetwood Mac – Dreams Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song. My favourite line is "Thunder only happens when its raining". Like many of you have said, this song, like many others on Rumors, is about the nature of relationships. Its about a woman warning a man that he won't know what he lost, until he loses it. Its only from a woman's perspective, because it was written by a woman. It works both ways, like some of you have already clearified. Like the classic saying, "the grass is always greener on the other side". It has a universal meaning, that's why Fleetwood Mac appeals to such a large audience. Also, many interpret it as being an angry song. However, in many ways its not. The woman is letting the man go, understanding he's only being honest with himself and her.

Sarah McLachlan – I Will Remember You Lyrics 18 years ago
My favourite part of the song is:
"I'm so afraid to love you, but more afraid to loose
Clinging to a past that doesn't let me choose"
It always seems like when your trying to love someone, your pass gets in the way and you just can't. Those old hurts and insecurities won't let you trust them, and you fall apart. And then being afraid to loose someone, it seems like everyone knows how that feels. Not wanting to accept to possibility of rejection by giving yourself to them. Life's so complicated and I love how this song just seems to take on meaning in every context. Beautiful. She doesn't get enough credit for her work.

I love this song, and I don't see how you can't. Its beautiful. When your really sad, and nothing is wokring out right, its perfect to listen too. Makes you want to cry, but afterwards you feel so much better. Its rare that a song can do that, but this one totally does it for me!!!

Sarah McLachlan – Fallen Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a song about losing yourself. Losing everything that God has given you, and wasting it on the material aspects of life. And when your down and out, those who you thought loved you are nowhere to be found. My favourite part is when "I messed up, better I should know". That bitter tasting feeling, when you fuck up and you knew better than to chase whatever it was you were chasing. This song can apply to anything in life; love, career, money, family life, anything that concerns taking a journey, and choosing the wrong path. One of my favourites.

The Alan Parsons Project – Eye In The Sky Lyrics 18 years ago
I see this as a romantic relationship between two people. The woman (persumably, since the singer is male) seems to be hot headed, and deceptive. She seems to appear to be truthful, however beneath appearences her motives are all lies. The male character is professing that he has had enough, and that the lies no longer work on him. You can also interpret it as the relationship between humanity and God. Such references include, "eye in the sky", "I am the maker of rules", " I can read your mind".

Eagles – Desperado Lyrics 18 years ago
I've always thought this song is about a woman. A young woman who won't let her guard down enough to fall in love. She's had many things in her life, but has never truly fallen in love. And slowly, but surely, life paces her by, and one day she's gonig to wake up and realize that while she was chasing false dreams, she missed out on the most important thing there is, love. Someone who's too afraid to fall in love, and bare the risk of being hurt. This song made me sad when I broke up with my boyfriend, love hurts :(.

Foreigner – Cold As Ice Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with K-leb, this song is defiantly about a woman whos to preoccuiped with herself. Maybe someone who wants so much, and in this journey to accquire more, she loses out on possibly the most precious gem of all, love. Maybe she can't love, and one day she's going to realize that she wasted her youth on false dreams. The meaning reminds me of "Desperado" by the Eagles.

Stevie Nicks – Leather and Lace Lyrics 18 years ago
Originally this was a Waylon Jennings and Jessi Coltier duet, which they both wrote together. However, with the country-folk-rock inspiration that Henley and Nicks brought to the song, I think this is a much better version. More edge to it, than the original. I agree, this is defiantly one of the greatest love songs of all time. Its so feminine, but a strong feminine. Then the masculine side I find is open & somewhat sensitive, which is also beautiful. A perfect balance. All together, the personas, the lyrics, the vocals, and the instrumental are all amazing. Her voice is at its best in this song. Love it!

Metallica – Nothing Else Matters Lyrics 18 years ago
This song does remind me of Pink Floyd in the beginning anna118k. I was in the car one day (I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan, I can tell you all the songs in order off of every album. Seeing Roger Waters in concert this June too!! :D) and I heard this song, and my cousin asked if I like d this Pink Floyd song, and I was like no I hate Metallica and then I heard there voice and I was like what the f!! Anyways, I don't like Metallica that much, but I do like this one song. My favourite line is "life is ours, we live it our way". I was having a shitty day and I just heard this song on my computer and I was like, that is so true. So my friend was criticizing me one day (ex-friend I might add), and in a cheesy way I said that to her. And she just shut up. Then she said sorry after. Try it! Anyways, I don't think its a love song. Its a life song, about your relationship with who you are. About finding comfort in who you are. "forever trusting who we are and nothing else matters". Basically, thats all that matters, is trusting and accepting your true self.

Philmore – Livin' on a Prayer (Bon Jovi cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
I think I like Bon Jovi's version better, but this one is still very good. I don't know how much its about business or students, but I can see how it can relate to that. The original intention, in my opinion, is very obvious. Two people who are in love, just holding on until they have more money. Then, they can run away and be happy, together. Very romantic.

Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb Lyrics 19 years ago
Alrighty retards, DAVID GILMOUR WAS NOT THE GENIUS BEHIND PINK FLOYD. You have to be an idiot to think that. If you look at any of the GREAT songs Roger Waters wrote them. Gilmour couldn't lyrically hold up the band without Waters. I just wanted you all to know that. Now, lets all go take a peak at Pink Floyds songs and their writers, and see who appears in all the great tracks (Breathe, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Wish You Were Here, Time, Money, Us & Them, Brain Damage, Eclipse, Welcome to the Machine, Have a cigar, Comfortably Numb, and so many more) , and you will not be suprised to know that it is in fact Waters. This was intended for some homo up top who thanked Gilmour. Gilmour was good, but Waters was great. Lovely, now cha.

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 19 years ago
I've heard the sublimnal message, and its fairly clear. In the 1950s, technology was developed that allowed backmasking to occur. Probably the most famous first attempt at backmasking and subliminal messages was by BBC News. Many people believed that the radio was satanic and evil, and refused to accept it as a form of broadcasting. So, in response to the technological development and the fears of the viewers, BBC included a subliminal message that instructed viewers that the radio was a safe and friendly medium. From there, Frank Zappa, faced with censorship issues, put a backmasked message in one of his songs that helped him surpass the censorship board and spread his message. From there, backmasking caught like wildfire in the music world, and artists including: the Beatles, the Eagles, Pink Floyd, Ozzy Osbourne, Led Zeppelin, ELO, and many more, began putting intentional subliminal messages in their songs. Some have been rather comic, such as the Pink Floyd versions, others have added to the songs content like the Eagles track Hotel California, while others have been a shocker technique that adds to the bands personna similar to Ozzy Osbourne. None the less, many artists have experimented with the technique, and have poked fun at the controversy that it ensued over the possible transmission of satanic messages to unknowning listeners. However accurate or legitimate the research may be, many studies support the argument that subliminal backwards messages can not be interperted by the mind. This was the major basis for Judas Priest trial in the 80s, that involved the suicide attempt of two teenagers. However, Judas Priest lawyers had proved that the youths home enviroment was unstable and prone to violence and verbal abuse. Obviously, it was a cash grab by parents trying to capitalize on their neglected sons suicide. Anywho, in regards to the Led Zeppelin backmasking, the band has consistantly denied intentional efforts to transmit subliminal messages to youth, with Robert Plant calling it "sad" and saying that this is not his "idea of making music". However, some alleigations have suggested that it was in fact Page who transmitted the message on to the record. Compared to other backmasking tracks, this one is particularly clear. However, many have said that people are making themselves hear these things. In my opinion, although the band repeatedly denies it, I believe that it was intentional. A marking ploy, an attempt to make the album mysterious. However, I would not be surprised if it wasn't intentional. I actually just heard the Doors tune "Break on through" played backwards, and apparently there was a spot that said "I am Satan". However, the first thing that I heard was "I had surgery". Here is an example where if you want to believe something is real, it's real. I suppose it's up to you to decide what you believe. If you want to hear some great flash recording and reversals of some popular backmasked songs, go to http://jeffmilner.com/backmasking.htm.

The Band – Ophelia Lyrics 19 years ago
In the above lyrics there are also alot of mistakes. I have listed them below:

1. In the 2nd stanza (2nd section) where the above lyrics say "Tell me, what went wrong" it should be "where have you gone"

2. In the 3rd stanza, instead of "Mama, I know wer broke the rules", its "Mama, you know we broke the rules"

3. Instead of "Honey you know I'd die for you", its "honey you know that I'd die for you"

4. The 4th stanza is entirely wrong and should be replaced with...
"They got your number
Scared and runnin'
But I'm still waitin' for the second comin'
Of Ophelia
Come back home
Please Darken my door"

5. I don't know why the above lyrics say "Wu" in the 5th stanza, but it should be "was" instead.

6. then the 6th stanza should read...
"Ashes of laughter
The ghost is clear
Why do the best things always disappear
Like Ophelia
Please Come back home"

The version of the song that I was using is from Last Waltz Disc 2, and basically I just played the song in comparison with the lyrics, and discovered the difference. Hope you enjoy!

The Band – Ophelia Lyrics 19 years ago
bradburyesqu I don't think we can just say that Ophelia has not meaning in the song. Oh course she does! Actually, the beauty of this song isn't the longning it's the mystery behind Ophelia like RayMan had said. However, I wouldn't go diving too deep either. Some songs are, although great, superfical. The meaning here is quite straight forward. I'm not sure if anyone here has every read "The Day of the Locust" but the Ophelia character here reminds my of Faye Greener, and the narrator Tod. I'm not saying the song is based on "The Day of the Locust", I am certain it is not, but what I am drawing a connection between is this notion of the watched and the watchers. Ophelia seems like one of the watched, obviously she was a bit promicious, and the singer and the "they" he refers to, are the watchers. However, at the end of the day, the song is about this strange women just leaving without notice, and these love struck men want her to come back. The tone of the song almost sounds as if they are taunting her, this could also suggest the lack of respect the singer feels for the women.

The Doors – Strange Days Lyrics 19 years ago
The song has a definite sense of irony to it. The narrator (the voice who Jim Morrison is portraying) seems to be ignorant. When he says, "We shall go on playing Or find a new town Yeah!", you can really see the childlike mentality. The narrator is also contradictory, and they realize this. You can see this when he says, "Hear me talk of sin". You get the feeling of a person who moves around alot, someone of unstable emotions. Also, the narrator recognizes the evil in his enviroment, but he's aware that he is apart of it too. The hostess seems to have a sexual nature about her. You can see this when he says "The hostess is grinning Her guests sleep from sinning". Perhaps they have had sex that wasn't based on love and more a selfish act of abuse towards each other. When you look at hostess you connect her with someone whom is a caretaker, a helpful figure. There again we see this irony, she is more of a devil in disguise. He makes it seem like she manipulates these people and basks in their destruction. Essentially, the despair in this story centers around her. In the last verse of the song, we see the narrator talk of emotional destruction and a sense of being lost. The characters live their life running from the past, running from their true self, and ultimatly turning into stone (or in other words lifeless creatures). So the work of the hostess wasn't physical, but more emotional. Whom you consider the hostess can be varied, perhaps it was a mother figure to Morrison, a symbol for government or nation (a place which we call "motherland"), media, matrialistic views (often associated with women). However, the identity of the hostess may have been left open so the listener could connect with the song on a more personal level. It also has a very apocalyptic feel to it. Words such as; destroy, stone, confused, misused, sin, grinning, alone. The song has alot of layers that are unclear, and most likely Morrison was experiencing some personal feeling that the song relates too.

Tom Cochrane – Life is a highway Lyrics 19 years ago
Okay, this song so reminds me of when I was little and living at my old apartment building, next door to this slutty ugly trashbag who wouldn't stop playing this song. But I love it anyhow! Anyways, I think this song is pretty straight forward. Its about two lovers, free lovers, who once had some bad times but now there in love again. As for imagrey and allusion, theres not so much of that. But I suppose it reminds one of the praries, the straight country roads that go on for long distances. Now, if you anything about Tom Cochrane, he was born in the Friendly Manitoba, Canada and then relocated to Ontario. So he's got a definite country roads feeling. So I urge you to think of this song in the praries, it paints a great picture.

I wonder why this song doesn't have more comments, it a really good song. I think the meaning is very straight forward and you would probaly agree, so I won't go on explaining it. I don't know if its just me, but I've always seen Bad Company's as being very sexy. Aren't they? They just have that feeling. I think it's about a women who's telling her true love that left her, that if he ever needed someone to love, or ever anything, that she would always be there waiting for him. All he has to do is ask. It's about selfless love. I really love her vocals in this song, very strong and bluesy. I think, personally, she probaly the greatest female singers ever to grace this earth. I know I'm not alone in this thought, it's pretty well shared by alot of people.

The Doors – People Are Strange Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this is a song about a social outcast. Someone who never belongs. It's a song, about the emotions a person who doesn't fit in feels. It touches on the ideas of lonliness, prosecution from others, isolation, resentment, pain, and some much more. I don't think people who've always been accepted would understand this song, because it doesn't pretain to them. Many great rockers were outcasts, that including Jim Morrison. Many of them because of a deep internal turmoil or conflict, that is why they have so much to write about. And I don't think it's about drugs or the pioneering longhairs of the 60's. That's just to gay. Morrison's songs are never that blatant. That's way too mainstream, and many creditable artists wouldn't touch on that.

David Bowie – Under Pressure Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song, its very good. However, lyrically, I'm not impressed. I find very little substance in it. Musically and vocally its very good. I'll give the lyrics a shot though. Basically, the song is about pressure. The pressure of relationships, success, money, happiness, salvation, and knowledge. I think its a comment on modern society as well. During the time that this song was written, artists and people of that time were on the brink of a social change, the developed through technology. As the future unfolded people began to realize the fate which lay before us, and naturally, artists were intune with these feelings and wrote about them. They mirror how the pressures of life have become such an influence in our lives, that we chase these goals that are so extravogant and elaborate that we begin to lose these simple joys. Thus, one of the most common and controlling aspect of human life, that has been around throughout all humanity, becomes lost in the stress of modern life. And love becomes something else, and no longer can we love from the heart, but from the mind. That's just my take on the song.

Rihanna – SOS Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't understand what's wrong with her/her producers, using the beat from Tainted Love. Because of people like you, the music business has become very possessive over it's artists and sounds. Making it far more commercial than ever. If we stop caring about who's doing what, and begin to appreciate the sound for what it is, then I think we have a chance. There is nothing wrong with trying to reuse a great tune, from a great song, and making another generation of people move, just like Soft Cell did 30 years ago. I understand why the Soft Cell allowed them to use the beat. That easy going mentality has defiantly faded, and we have become a dull and shallow generation.

Mr. Big – To Be With You Lyrics 19 years ago
Okay, pfaustian, your a retard. There is no indiction in this song that implies the girl is a prostitue. When analyzing a sng you have to put in consideration that there is more than just lyrics, like music. The most important things that indentify the song meaning are music, singing, and lyrics. Keeping this in mind, eventhough there is reference to the military, it does not mean she's a prositute. The music makes the listener feel happy, loved, wanted, and calm. The singing shows passion, longing, and love. And the lyrics pretty much sum that all up into words. All together, you think its a happy love song, not a song about a man who wants to get with a prositute. Try listening to this song, and thinking about that, it just doesn't fit. Also, the green and blue reference, it was very popular to wait on men from the military. Women used to scramble for them because there was a certain dignity in having your boyfriend in the military, it was something a person could be proud of back then. Did you ever think that maybe this girl is wanting the best, and the narrator is telling her, that true love is with him. Oh, but no you didn't.

Eagles – Desperado Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song, its one of my favourite from the Eagles. I think its about a women who is afraid of falling in love. She lived a fairly fortunate life, "Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table", but doesn't want that, she always wants what she can't have. And her life has been spent searching for freedom and truth, but missing the true meaning of it. And she doesn't realize that there is freedom in being in love and having a companion, and these are the things she truly wants, even though she hides behind this image of being independent. And so because of her fear of letting herself go, she doesn't let people fall in love with her, and doesn't let people have a chance. So they turn away, and she traps herself in this prison of lonliness. So her inner child fades and she becomes a reflection of all the bad things in society, and the life in her escapes, and she finds herself all alone. The narrator is telling her to let go and be free, and although initally she might suffer from hurt and rejection, "Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you", there will be someone who will love her and accept her for who she is.
