To me, this song is about being depressed and not having anyone there. For one reason or another, there's no one there who you can talk to about it, so you just suffer silently and put on a fake smile. People are either too busy to notice the subtle signs asking for help, or they don't know how to respond and pretend nothing is wrong. "Emptiness is nothing you can share" |

Not that I even have to say this, but this is one of the greatest songs ever. It's is one of those songs in which every line is open to so many interpretations. Ya gotta love that. To me, it's about a fall from the top. I don't think the narrator is necessarily rubbing it in the girl's face. I think it's more like a "hey, welcome to the real world" kind of thing. The girl definitely didn't lose her innocence, she found it. She used to live in a world where everyone was condescending and materialistic, and now she's made her way to the real world, either by choice or some great downfall, where she's finally able to see with out her blinders on. The narrator, in sort of a mocking tone, is welcoming her and introducing her to this new found independence. He's warning her that it's going to be difficult for her at first, but she's much better off. When you think about it, this song can be applied to any great fall one endures. You might be flying high for awhile, but once you're knocked down off your high horse, you're able to recognize everything that's wrong with "the top". Well, I'm rambling now and probably not making sense so I'll wrap this up. This is just my interpretation, and it might be way off base. |

Haha....the most memorable part of this song is the video. I was probably only 9 or 10 when it came out. My sisters used to watch MTV all the time, and I remember this video would always be on...probably right before Daria or Singled Out. After those few months, I totally forgot about this song...until the other day. I was driving and heard it on the radio (can you say random?), and it all came back to me. I even remembered the words. Ahhh memories.... Anywho, I don't think this song is necessarily mocking the "popular" crowd. I think it's sarcastically criticizing the ridiculous, superficial, and hypocritical standards that we, as a society, impose in high school. It's almost like their really is a guidebook for teenage popularity. Whether you're "popular" or not, you can't deny that at one point or another you didn't try to follow some sort of societal rule to fit in. High school is a game, and we've all played. I definitely don't think this song is an anthem against the "popular" kids, and if you think it is, then you probably just need to get over some issues and not take life so seriously....Be happy with who you are and don't compare your life to others. But hey, all this is just my opinion. Songs are what we make of them. |

You can find so many different lyrical versions of this song. For example, my friends and I noticed in one version the line goes something like "And little early burly gave my anus curl a whirly..."...what the hell? lol. Go to http://lyrics.astraweb.com and see how many different lyrics there are just on that site. Crazy. Sd for the meaning, I can see how the car accident thing might work- and the carnival theory is interesting- but I think this song is mostly about the the fast pace world of drugs, primarily cocaine, pulls you in..."blinded by the light, revved up, tripped the merry-go-round"...very clear drug references. The "sneezin' and wheezin" line also obviously indicates cocaine use. Sneezing and other cold-like symptoms are one of the stages of cocaine addiction. I s'pose song meanings are always up for debate, though. We all interpret things differently. One thing that can't be argued, however, is the musical genuis and composition of this song. It's very well written and so cleverly arranged. |
