this is straight from an interview, when he was 19 he took a trip to chicago to get away from school with a couple of friends, they had to make it the whole weekend on 20 dollars each, they ended up staying with a group of homeless guys around the same age as them in a run down abandoned school, the new york part is obviously about his move to new york, he says the song is about running away from things

i am a yooper, the KEWEENAW is my home. it is a very beautiful and peaceful place, sure theres not a booming economy, but its a place to enjoy the outdoors, very few people live in the poor conditions described in the song, there is alot of rich history and it is a great place to live, im working on an album to portray the u.p. specifically, both positive, negative, and historical, kinda hard to find time though while flying choppers for the army
