Ray LaMontagne – Be Here Now Lyrics 18 years ago
This song was in a trailer for the film Away From Her, and now I'll forever associate it with that haunting, heartbreaking movie. Add it to your Netflix queue, people. It's a stunning film.

With that said, this song is just exquisite.

I like your interpretation, hautehautehaute. The lines about "and it breaks my heart," "all my friends say..." make me think that she'd suffered some kind of pain. It seems to me that something bad happened, but that she's still grateful for having experienced love. Whether this is a good or bad thing is up to the listener, I suppose, but I never felt that this song was negative. I like the idea of the "pain" being less of a pain, more of an overwhelming rush of emotion.

I think everyone here has some pretty interesting comments to make. Fantastic song.

Jacques Brel – Ne Me Quitte Pas Lyrics 19 years ago
ChildInTime, I'm American and speak two languages and am learning two others. French doesn't happen to be one of them, but I do plan to learn it at some point. While a good number of Americans don't know languages other than English, I know quite a few bilingual Americans. Please don't generalize. :)

Just his voice is enough to break your heart. This song is stunning.

Dire Straits – Romeo And Juliet Lyrics 19 years ago
"Bars of Orion" makes very little sense, AFAIK (where do the "bars" come from in relation to a constellation?). "Bars of a rhyme" makes much more sense. The rhyme is the "love song that he made"- since he can't show her he loves her by actually kissing her, he shows her by standing underneath her window and singing his song to her, therefore kissing her through the bars of his rhyme.

Anyway, this is a heartbreakingly beautiful song that I never ever tire of.

Regina Spektor – Mermaid Lyrics 19 years ago
FWIW, the idea of the mermaid selling her voice for a pair of bleeding feet is from "The Little Sea-Maid" by Hans Christian Andersen. The little sea-maid is in love with the prince and wants to be human, so she sells her voice (just like the Disney version) and receives a pair of feet that bleed when she walks or dances (not quite like the Disney version =P).

As for the meaning of the song, I think adkonz is dead on.

I love the beat to this song. It's so simple but just makes you want to move.

I think the song is about her trying to protect herself from heartbreak by absorbing herself in music, but she falls in love and has her heart broken anyway.

Brian Eno – By This River Lyrics 19 years ago
A really beautiful, touching song. It was in the film "La stanza del figlio" ("the son's room"), and complemented the poignant story perfectly.

Derek and the Dominos – I Am Yours Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm surprised no one else has commented. This is such a beautiful, simple love song.

The lyrics are lifted straight from the classic star-crossed love story of Layla and Majnun. The pair were deeply in love, but Layla's father forbade their union. Majnun went crazy (the name means "madman") and lived in the wild, composing poems for his love. At one point he comes upon a hunter about to slaughter a stag and buys the stag's freedom. He tells it to go free and that if it sees Layla, to tell her this:

I am yours, however distant you may be.
Your sorrow, when you grieve, brings grief to me.
There blows no wind but wafts your scent to me.
There sings no bird but calls your name to me.
Each memory that has left its trace with me
Lingers for ever, as if part of me.

A truly beautiful story and a wonderful read, which clearly left an impression on Clapton.

"Unleash upon me the saga of being in love. O friend, be my Layla, for I am Majnun."
