Lt. Salt, you've got to be kidding me? commenting on the low production quality of velvet underground songs is like saying michelangelo used shitty colors to paint the sistine chapel. |

i think it's just the influence of modernism. velvet underground was obviously very influenced by ideas in art and culture. and, i think if you take a step back and look at what was going on in art history at the time, you'll find that people like john cage were influencing ideas of everyone in various forms of creative expression. and, i think this is one of those cases where the fact that there are two sets of lyrics disconcerting the listener in a physically jarring daze, is the point of the song. it's sort of like an experiment. as a listener, you're constantly aware of the medium and technique at all times, and you're never lost in an instrument or vocal or anything, because it's so conflicting and clashing that you're forced to pay attention to it. in general, that's an idea posed by modernist and post-modernist artists and i think VU was just experimenting more with the phsyical aspects of songwriting and the effects that it can have on attention (ie, which set of vocals you choose to listen to or whether you choose to pay attention to the instruments instead). it's all in good fun. :) |

yeah, i think this is one of those songs where the repetition of "maybe all i need is a shot in the arm" gives me goosebumps.
great song to scream at the top of your lungs to, while driving. |
