Soilwork – Distortion Sleep Lyrics 19 years ago
It is 'guttersnipe'... cool song.

Seems like it might be describing the conflict between rich and poor, haven't looked much into it though.

Thrice – Image of the Invisible Lyrics 19 years ago
Perspective is a very strong fact in this song. It's a message being foretold to the people; in a protestant fashion. Symbolic, likely, of a religious group. In particular, Christianity. Backing this belief is the use of the word "canticle." - this word uses a dual representation - one of a regular chant, and is also likely in reference to the Canticle of Canticles in regards to the Bible.

Anyways, I'm not sure if this has been wrote about yet - but I think this can also be interpreted in this way.

In the last two stanzas of the song, it speaks of the death of these protestant people.
"though shadow overtake us,"
It is most apparent in that line.

Anyways, I believe this song is majorly about a war that occurs. In the end, the side representing that they are more than "carbon and chemicals" die, or lose the war. It was this entire viewpoint, apparent throughout the song, that caused their downfall. In the end, they become the "image of the invisible". Since they're now dead, they are nothing but an image written about in a book; therefore, an invisible image.

This warlike image that is found within the last two stanzas, however, is not something found within the first two.
"we are all named and we are all known
we know that we'll never walk alone"

turns to this
"raise up the banner, bend back your bows
remove the cancer, take back your souls"

Is this symbolic of a believed manifestation, or evil in religion? A person doesn't join a religious group with intent of hate or death, but in this case, it does. They turn protestant, and eventually the entire world hates them. But they claim that, at least, "we are known."

Another thing to consider - does the "static and dial tone" or "carbon and chemicals" represent people that are not of their certain belief? Perhaps they believe they have recieved supreme enlightenment; therefore thinking less of non-believers.

And OMG - further; in regular society, they believe they are being "culled", or picked out. But they take safety within their religion. They say - "we can't allow this, our quiet cull. so we sing out this, our canticle." Does this mean, that religion is a resort for safety within our society? Does religion save us from the horrors that any people not believing in would see?

Anyways, just a theory. I know you aren't all this hardcore.

Thrice – Don't Tell And We Won't Ask Lyrics 19 years ago
For this song, the meaning of it is left up to your own interpretation. This is outlined in the first "stanza" (I guess?), where there are two definite meanings given to the song.

"paint the target
we don't need no evidence
flood the market
we do it all in self defense "

In these lines, representations of political corruption are placed.

"you're a smart kid
never work without your gloves
if you're a smart kid
you'll stay the hell away from love"

And in these, representations things such as condom-usage are placed. This also hints at the writer perhaps being religious, likely into Christianity? Not sure, though.

Although dual-meanings do exist within this song, the basis is similar. The meanings are linked in the second stanza; which basically tells us that murder of the innocent, or "lesser" are involved. Lesser can be in reference to younger, like babies. It can also be in reference to people of a lower or different political status, or rank. For example, in war, the populace opposing yours, or in politics, people of a lower social class.

The third stanza outlines further the interpretation of this having a political or war-like meaning.

"and your blue blood
you'll see it all makes perfect sense "

In these lines, blue blood is representing the lack of oxygen within blood. It's commonly known a person will turn blue upon death. This is due to the hemoglobins within your blood. Oxyhemogoblins is blood carrying oxygen, and oxyhemogoblins are colored red. However, when there exists a lack of oxygen, the hemoglobins will turn to Deoxyhemoglobins, which are blue. In other words, the lines represent a person being lifeless, cold, or heartless.

"drink from this cup
a better life awaits us all"

I believe this is further reference to Abortion. Perhaps it's speaking of day-after pills, birth control, among other things. It also could be speaking of metaphorical brainwashing, the cup representing the actual brainwashing occurring. Which would be in reference to the political side of the song. Again, up to interpretation.

"you're one of us
remember conscience comes before the fall"

When a person is born, they do not bear guilty conscience or evil. It is not implemented into their blood, or DNA. This line is speaking of that. In order for someone to become evil, a person must make them become so. These lines say "conscience comes before the fall"; the fall represents a person become evil - a cold, heartless murderer. But this line is implying someone made that person this way. This is likely referring to the government.

"your actions all are justified
your actions all are justified"

Is there true justification for murder? You're a soldier; of course - it's your job. You have to kill people.
But do you really? Or is that just what the government is trying to tell you? This song implies that they are, indeed, justifications incorrectly manufactured by the government. These lines also strengthen the idea of brainwashing.

"but don't we all bleed red blood?
don't we all bleed red blood?"

Although the meaning of this is fairly blatant; it's believed to be truly a question to a certain someone of political status. Also, it can be speaking of metaphorical blood, the blood of the fetus you've disallowed life.

Of course, this song isn't nessicarely about politics or abortion; it can be applied to many different things. Put simply, this song is about people who are forced to kill others for their own benefit. Also that it isn't nessicarely their fault; but rather the ones who manipulated them to do such horrible acts.
