hey, what do you mean go back to built to spill pages? this is a forum, and talking about the original is totally relevant. anyways. i am a huge built to spill fan, and their version is fantastic, but brand new has managed to shell out a version comparable. i say, nice job. |

I think is funny how most people who hear this song like it for nostalgic reasons, and don't actually take Hanson seriously.
I myself being one of them. |

Amazingly catchy song, by an amazingly catchy band. I believe the third to last stanza "I said a thousand million things that I could never say this morning" is actually "I thought a thousand million things that I could never think this morning." It is definitely "say" the first time he says it, but he changes it to "think" at the end of the song. |

Its only been said about a hundred times, but this song is simply amazing. Its hard to imagine that anyone could put it better. These feelings of isolation, uncertainty and disappointment are just composed so beautifully by Isaac. |

I have to totally agree with Dai101 on this one. Narsil also makes some good points, and that could also be what he was trying to say. I hate to bash on peoples opinions of music since a song can have a different meaning to everyone, but I think youeatpoop is just wrong. Sorry buddy, but I find it hard to believe you are convincing anyone when you say indie rockers don't write love songs. It seems that you are implying that writing a song about love is demeaning to an indie band, and I think many people would disagree with that. |

I really like deliriumtrigger's interpretation of this song. It's hard to say what exactly he was trying to say, but in my opinion, it is about the weight that hate can have on a person.
It may sound lame, but I think this song has a similar meaning to that of the movie American History X. For anyone who hasn't seen it, it is about a neo-Nazi (Edward Norton) who recently was released from jail for killing two men after his car was being stolen. While incarcerated, he realized that all this hate that he had, was not helping anyone, and when he was released he changed his ways. He had to basically rebuild his life when he got out, and this is what reminds me of the song. Specifically the lines:
in this time I've learned
change your hate cause that's your slave
turn your head from your evil ways
your church is red blood flows black from your heart
we build our temple one brick at a time
I highly doubt there is any actual connection at all, but it's what I get from it. I would recommend American History X to anyone, it's one of my favorites. |

As for the meaning of this song, I have to hand it to mousefan. In my opinion, Isaac just wanted to say that in the end, "shit goes on". As for all this capitalism crap, it doesn't bother me at all. Don't get me wrong, I am huge Modest Mouse fan, but who am I to say that they shouldn't sell a piece of their song to a commercial? I was listening to an interview with Isaac Brock after Good News came out and he was asked about this Nissan commercial. The interviewer asked Isaac how he was supposed to "juggle the fans and keep them happy". Isaac responded very matter-of-factly that he never has and never will attempt to have "anything to do with what they are thinking about". After this line, he said something that put it in a very different perspective. Isaac said that these people don't have to pay their rent by making music and he does. The truth is, it was about the money and thats the bottom line. He finished off by saying that if something ethically bothers his fans, then thats their problem. And he is right. It is ridiculous to hold something like this against an amazing band like Modest Mouse, and I don't think a true fan would do so. I thought GhostBitch's comment was hysterical. I hope to god they were not serious. |
