If you were a song, I'd be your metaphor.

Buddy Holly – That'll Be The Day Lyrics 19 years ago
It's good Buddy’s getting this attention. :)

Don McLean’s song “American Pie” did make reference to this song and to the day of the plane crash; however, please let me make two notes about the comments above:

The plane was not named “American Pie” or “Miss American Pie.”

This was not the #1 song on the day of the plane crash.

Buddy Holly – True Love Ways Lyrics 19 years ago
Buddy’s voice saves this from being schmaltzy. A couple covers come to mind when I think of how it could have gone wrong. The orchestration is also top-notch, though the record would have had a lovely spin with just BH and his guitar.

In my opinion, this song works specifically because Buddy was not a crooner – at least, not in the traditional sense. This song is less smoke-and-mirrors and more gentle, earnest, and classy. Talk about your triple threat.

This song is special to me because it is both romantic and realistic. It acknowledges the truth: that sometimes life will be difficult. The couple will cry, but they’ll work through it together. It might even bring them closer.

I like that, while this song acknowledges the outside world (sharing joys with those who really care), it is also very intimate. “Just you and I” know these ways of true love.

I’ve often thought of this song in terms of a couple starting out – the use of “will by and by,” “throughout the days,” and “will bring us” suggests that they’re looking into the future; yet, it’s applicable in far greater scope.

And what are the ways of true love? Oh, really… ;)

Buddy Holly – Peggy Sue Lyrics 19 years ago
Buddy's girlfriend's name was Echo; his niece's name was Cindy. Here's more behind this song
from http://buddyhollyonline.com/questions.html:

"Originally with a Calypso beat, Buddy penned 'Cindy Lou' for his niece of the same name. Drummer J.I. Allison was dating 'Peggy Sue Gerron' and they had just had an argument. Figuring a song named after her would impress her, J.I. asked if the title could be changed. Buddy daringly bet that if J.I. could drum the whole song doing 'paradiddles' (the fast beat) that he would change the song. Buddy didn't expect he could, but J.I. did and the song (and rock & roll) was forever changed."

What a fabulous song. I love the beyond-famous instrumental break!
