Lacuna Coil – Cold Heritage Lyrics 19 years ago
There are a couple different ways this can go, but it's obviously about being alone.

It's far, far easier to be lonely by yourself than it is to be lonely among other people. Anyone who's ever wished more than anything not to be alone knows exactly how feels to be the odd person out in a group, or to be surrounded by a world filled with people who don't care about you because they care about someone else.

Worst is being physically close to someone and still feeling alone, because you want someone to care for, and you know they aren't that person, or because you care for them and know they don't care for you.

This song is about loving someone immensely and knowing you can never, ever let them know, because you know they don't feel the same way and you care more about them or more about their friendship than you do about your own feelings.

There's some interesting duality in the lyrics, particulary as it isn't clear why the person wants to be forgiven. Forgive me for falling in love with you? Forgive me for doing something wrong? Forgive myself for feeling this way? Is the person looking back and seeing all this, and wishing they'd kept their feelings to themselves?

It's probably not that specific, anyway. The song conveys a feeling, the lyrics most likely aren't all intended to represent anything in particular.
