about this song sounding like Modest Mouse, I think every song on this cd sounds at least similar to another band. some I can't quite put my finger on. Millstone-Midtown from "forget what you know" (Take me out tonight...) Jesus Christ - Modest Mouse (as mentioned here) Degausser - ? ("goodbye to sleep..." sounds very familiar) Limousine - The Faint from when they used more conventional instruments; from media and before (Hey,It's your ride....to be your mother) You won't know - Weezer/Radiohead/the Smiths (hey hey hey mr hangman.../Music in the break/ so they say that in heaven...respectively) Welcome to bangkok - Radiohead Instrumental Not the sun - Modest Mouse (Please make the technology...) at "be my bane/babe/bait" i hear another band but i can't tell who it is. Luca - Mars Volta (When I disappear...) Archers- ? (who do you carry the torch for...) ive never thought of this song as love, though it most definately could be. I've always thought it had a somewhat orwellian meaning, and how there are so many referances to how we are fed lies, strung along, believing so many things that end up not being true. i.e. "They lace me along, Giving synapse of white lines. Then chasing the dawn, Story book syntax." Lace me along means that we are taught what we need to know to fit into todays society rather than being taught all the knowledge that is out there. a similar lyric would be in stare at the sun when dustin says "study parts but not the whole" "synapse of white lines" giving simple, filtered (white) thoughts "chasing the dawn" is chasing knowledge "storybook syntax" we are still only using basic knowledge similar to the english used in storybooks |

if you read the lyrics, you will notice that they sort of single the listener/reader out and make you feel somewhat helpless. "the blood on our black gloves, it is none of your concern./you want to call our bluff, get in line and wait your turn" this is the feeling that is intended, showing how helpless we are against the beaurocracy in america/the world. because that is just how it is set up it is indeed a reference to witch hunts(obviously) but underneath that it is a metaphor for the hopeless public watching a higher power prosecute someone for something without proper evidence. (government prosecuting muslims for 9/11 attacks is an example but not necessarily the event the song is based on) if a member of the public were to speak out against these events, whatever they may be, they would be prosecuted as though they were one of the "witches" and would be "burned" as well. |

i saw them recently too, and what i believe jesse said before this song was "this next song is about a shipwreck. i was on that ship." after the show I was thinking about what he said and even that statement leaves the song with a vague meaning. This is because of two reasons 1) he could have just stated that the song was indeed about a shipwreck, and if he was actually on the ship that would certainly be a good reason to write a song. 2)By stating he was "on the ship" he could be confirming that this song is indeed a metaphor for something other than a shipwreck, that he was involved in. Assuming that everyone already knew it was a metaphor for something other than a shipwreck, he was just trying to tell us it was a song based on a real-life situation that happened to him. it doesn't look like i really helped anyone's point here, but im just giving you some more things to think about. |

Red dresses are commonly used and have historically been used in poetry and music as a symbol for prostitution. With that in mind, look at the song again. Although Justin is not singing about a prostitute, he is clearly singing about how he enjoys the sexual aspect of a relationship more than the emotional. i.e. "with tilted head like a listener but i'm just thinking about the red dress" he's pretending to be listening to the girl, but in reality he is just been thinking about sex. |

"This song has the most fucked up time signatures." if you take this song as a reference to drugs, it fits perfectly with the lyrics. When the lyrics in the song song start singing "I need a fix cause I'm going down" is when the speed and poppiness of song comes crashing down, almost to a halt, and it feels to the listener almost as though they are crashing as well. It begins to pick up again at "mother superior jump the gun" but not to the same poppy speed. The song at this point sounds more panicked and creates a sense of panic in the listener, perhaps somewhat representing the feeling of withdrawls. finally he gets what he needs, and the song again slows to a more comfortable speed, with alot of harmonizing and very calm music. creating a somewhat euphoric feeling similar to that of being intoxicated. i can also see many sexual references, moreso in the begining of the song. and am not completely decided on the meaning of this song, but i find that people are not analyzing the music as thoroughly as they are focussing on the lyrics.They are both elements of the same machine, and you may be able to find support for your case by listening to the musical element of the song. |
