this is the most confusing song ever. I am from England, I have wondered if she is talking about BEING a statue in london? Has anyone else considered this or am i being stupid? "The hard shell bugs bite my forearm My right index fingernail chewed to the quick" - could this be referring to the decaying of a monument? "My friends come to visit and love me a lot I don't have the energy to fill them in"- a reference to tourists coming to visit the statue they love- although it never speaks back. "I am intrigued by the boy with songs sometimes they rhyme sometimes they rhyme not"...referring to buskers who perform around such monuments?? I don't know- maybe i've got it completely wrong, what do people think? p.s. the lyrics on this site are wrong in parts. |

i don't know for sure but i thought it might've had something to do with either HER experiences in india or the experiences of other young women in inidia. She's "heading for the west", and she's "being unoppressed". "Glad that I left when I did before “no dear you can't” got the best of me"- i know she spent time with guru's and religious figures in india- i wondered if some (or someone) attempted to oppress her on the basis of her gender, leading her to return to the west. The difficulty i have with this song is that it could encourage xenophobia, and fuel racial stereotypes (if the meaning suggested IS the intended meaning). I'd like to think the song was written about one isolated incident (everyone knows that she loves indian culture anyway). |

I think it's obvious that Shari has captured the meaning...I always assumed it to be about her early days in the industry... "do you realise guys i was born in 1974?" people shocked by her level of maturity at such a young age. "we know how much you love to be in front of audiences", true about a young alanis. "take a trip to N.Y with your guardian and your fake I.D", travelling with minders/agents/publicists. when they said "is there something anything you'd like to know young lady?" you said "yes i'd like to know what kind of people i'll be dealing with" - another sign of alanis' early maturity. What i especially love is the last verse: "we're surprised you're not in a far-gone asylum we're surprised you didn't crack-up lord knows that we would've"- i see this as refering to her Jagged Little Pill comeback- fans and friends surprised that she hadn't fallen victim to the fate of many child stars. |

Maybe i'm completely wrong about this but i think (at least some) parts are about her breaking up with someone after Jagged Little Pill has gone huge. "you started saying things like "you belong to the world"": like after she became huge she "belonged" to the public. "raise the roof" he yelled- refering to an argument before one of her shows?? Acouple fo things i dont understand...the opening line "i know he's blood but u can still turn him away" and also the chorus "i'm in the front row"- possibly be refering to seeing him "close-up" for the first time- as someone said. |

| that's really interesting about the dave matthews theory- it would make sense. Like was previously mentioned, i too can relate to some of the lines- particularly the verse about "jonothan" - "used to be attracted to guys who would lie to me", "plenty self destructive for my taste at the time" "the more tragic the better", I think loads of people have been like that at some point. One of her best songs- i never get tired of it. | |

| alanis is quoted as saying it's the saddest song she's ever done. I find it really sad, i especially like the line: I thought we'd be sexy together. God does anyone else think alanis has some guts? The way she refuses to be humiliated by her unfulfilled expectations, brilliant. | |

This song is clearly about the problems facing the early feminist movement (and still facing feminists today). The divide between groups within feminism..."you and me feel joined by only gender we are not all for one and one for all" clearly refers to the realisation that there were differences in the needs and experiences of individual groups within the movement (often down to class and race differences) which lead to divisions within feminism. Gender alone was not enough to join them. "we forget how hard separatism has been"- another indication that this song is about the feminist movement, there is disagreement amongst feminists about whether or not seperatism (emphasizing male/female differences) helps or hinders their cause. I think this is an excellent song by alanis and should've made the U.R.S final cut. It stands alone from much of her catalogue in that it doesn't focus primarily on a specifically personal experience (although i am not saying this is a particulkarly good or bad thing). What do people think about my comments? |
