@jopageri i'm glad that i'm not the only one who felt that the song had homoerotic undertones. i didn't even catch the 'the boys in the band' reference! just something about 'if i crash on the couch can i sleep in my clothes?' makes it sound like he's speaking to a guy and i hear the rest of the song addressed to him, haha. anyway i'm not saying it's a song about 'being' gay... to me it's about those awkward moments when you're super drunk and depressed and you're trying to express all the desperation you feel about everything by, uh, trying to hook up with the most unlikely person ever (come on, it's happened to you!). who in this case seems to be the best friend, who is a dude. WHOOPS LOL. yes i know that it's a concept album but i've never been much good with them, so i'm just having fun here. |

i've never read the interviews so i don't know what the intent was, but i have always taken the song as being told from two points of view -- one where a person is confused about the meaning of family, possibly because s/he doesn't feel like his/her family really cares or accepts him/her, and the other perspective is of the friend who is basically saying, we're not going to give up on you, we all love you whether they do or not, and you always have us as a 'family.' :) anyway i'm not saying that this is the meaning of the song at all but that's how i take it, in any case. |

| Regina Spektor – Loveology Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
i think Mongolev is on nearly the same track as i am on this song. (i just want to note that i know that regina rarely writes songs pertaining to herself, but for ease of writing i'm just using 'she') i think this song follows a similar theme to 'The Scientist' by Coldplay, where a person who thinks more in 'rational' and mathematical/scientific terms tries to explain and justify his irrational love emotions. she describes the person in question as an incurable humanist, and if we are to take the song sort of literally and she's teaching a science course, the narrator thinks in a 'scientific' way. the song is her way to desperately try and explain her feelings -- and love is such an irrational emotion -- in a way that makes sense to her (science). perhaps she was seen as cold by the person in question and that's why the relationship broke apart, and she is trying to prove that she indeed can understand love and emotions, albeit in her own way. |

| oh, nightmare ganon, that makes sense, too. i like that theory. :) | |
| AFI – Love Like Winter Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| also gotta say i love the way davy havok describes things a lot of times. 'she exhales vanilla lace' -- cigarette smoke when it's cold. if you smoke, and you live somewhere where it gets damn cold and humid, you know what i'm talking about... you exhale the smoke and it mixes with the condensation and floats away in a strange, slow way... and i mean. i'm assuming decemberunderground is cold. :P | |
| AFI – Love Like Winter Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
here is my theory. not particularly deep, but you know. First verse is told from the girl's POV -- she is telling this guy who is in love with her that he should stay even though she is not available (all the winter references, you know, emptiness blah blah) because she's dating someone else. But in the first chorus, she says that it's something inevitable that they'll be together (it's in the blood, i met my love before i was born). second verse is this guy's POV -- 'i barely dreamt her yesterday' i'm supposing refers to the surrealness that this person just pops into your life and you are so in love with them. note that he refers to himself as 'I, me,' etc, but then there's a 'his.' ''She said it seems you're somewhere far away' to his face' means that she's speaking to someone else, and i think that someone else is the other guy she's seeing -- basically, she leaves him. |

although i think this song is about drugs and what have you, i don't think it has such a condescending tone to it as the comments seem to think it does... i think that he is talking about himself (and i know havok is straightedge but for god's sake you can write about things you don't personally experience). he is aware that what he is doing isn't exactly awesome ('do you find me dreadful?') and that it will eventually kill him or at least fuck him over pretty badly ('we'll all pretend these killing lights won't kill us all again'). he is in a relationship and he is saying that he thinks he's a disgrace but she never leaves him, so he is asking her if this is because she finds him beautiful or because she finds him useful for something. in any case, that's how i interpret it :) |

| The Smiths – Still Ill Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I feel like this song has to do with current events/national events/otherwise 'life events' effecting a relationship negatively. Someone mentioned the way labor and the workforce was going in England during the time that the song was written, and I think it'd be reasonable to say that the person 'narrating' this song was disappointed in the fact that the other person in the relationship was buying into the consumerism and all-around corporate whoreishness, and it basically changed everything. If that makes sense. | |

Mercedescat, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I THOUGHT!!! When I first heard this song, I was about 10 years old and couldn't figure what to make of the lyrics. But I just heard it again for the first time in years, and Heaven's Gate was the first thing to come to mind! :D |

| Fastball – The Way Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I thought this song was about people in a cult, as they often left everything behind and became isolated, and the verses were specifically talking about one couple in particular. the 'exit to eternal summer slacking' would be the salvation/heaven/whatever this cult would've been offering. And in the second verse, they started getting a bit nervous about leaving it all behind. But they decided to just go ahead with it. And then their children (who I always assumed to be young) woke up alone. And I think the repeated line 'But where were they going without ever knowing the way?' was to refer to saying, you know, why would they do something like this when you can't be sure that you're actually going to get what you want out of this cult thing. BUT ANYWAY I guess I'm wrong, as the inspiration for this song is already known, haha. |

| Rammstein – Sonne (English) Lyrics | 19 years ago |

| Theatre of Tragedy – Venus – English Translation Lyrics | 19 years ago |

why the hell would you 'translate' old English? come one guys, 'tragedienne' isn't a hard word. and I know the other half is still in Latin. It's how it's being sung. |

| Theatre of Tragedy – Venus – English Translation Lyrics | 19 years ago |

i believe this is the accurate translation, via sing365: Circa mea pectora multa sunt suspiria De tua pulchritudine, que me ledunt misere. Venus! - I trow'd thou wast my friend - Professed to Heaven thou wouldst send; As a disciple of a villain Didst thou act the tragedienne. Iam amore virginali totus ardeo. Amor volat undique, captus est libidine. Venus! - I trow'd thou wast my friend - Professed to Heaven thou wouldst send; As a disciple of a villain Didst thou act the tragedienne. Iam amore virginali totus ardeo. Circa mea pectora multa sunt suspiria De tua pulchritudine, que me ledunt misere. Tui lucent oculi sicut solis radij, Sicut splendor fulguris, qui lucem donat tenebris. |

| The Decemberists – We Both Go Down Together Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| this guy was basically insane, thought he was doing her a favor with this 'relationship,' raped her, and when his parents were against the relationship and she wasn't into it either, he killed himself and took her with him. | |

i posted the lyrics, and i'm gonna comment now. i love this song. i live near woodstock, and on WDST, theyplayed this all the time around Christmas. It was so fitting. there's much to be said, i don't think i fully understand the song myself, but i'll get to it later. :) |

| The Decemberists – The Bagman's Gambit Lyrics | 19 years ago |

The line 'and at the gate of the embassy, our hands met through the bars' just blows me away. It is so cinematic, I could just imagine a scene in the middle of the night in the rain when that happens. This is the song that got me into the Decemberists. |

| Panic! at the Disco – Nails For Breakfast, Tacks For Snacks Lyrics | 19 years ago |

this song is about how the seriousness of someone's mental illness just keeps getting worse and worse, and Camisado is about that person's suicide attempt. in my opinion and whatnot. :) |

| Placebo – Slackerbitch Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
LadyBoy, way to totally not understand the abusive cycle. :D now, if this song were to be interpreted as an abusive relationship, it obviously doesn't mean Molko is an abusive guy -- he can write about whatever he wants, and creativity does include being able to write about things that you haven't experienced. |
|
| Placebo – Slackerbitch Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| i was in a verbally and psychologically abusive relationship... to me, this song pretty much describes the cycle, of all the insults (faghag, whore, impure and immature, etc) and manipulative guilting (you've always had it made, etc) to all the empty apologies (i didn't mean it). but it never actually ends. this song has phrases that were used to abuse me, actually... heh. | |
| Voltaire – Caught A Lite Sneeze Lyrics | 19 years ago |

i should elaborate... tori amos, if i recall correctly, wrote this song about taking vengence against an ex. but definitely no gay people... although that's actually really interesting! :D |

| this is a tori amos cover. :) | |
| Our Lady Peace – Stealing Babies Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| i always thought it was about a man pleading to his suicidal girlfriend/wife to not kill herself. he describes in the first verse how he can't leave her alone anywhere or not worry about her, and asks how he could make it better. in the chorus, she keeps attempting to, but then is talked out of it by a friend on the phone. | |
