John Denver – The Christmas Wish Lyrics 18 years ago
I absolutely love this song, and listen to all Christmas season long! The meaning is pretty self-explanatory, but still so beautiful...love is a powerful force, and we Should be able to spread love for humanity all year long.
I think the first verse deals a lot with faith...it doesn't really matter if you've seen the Christmas star, or even if you believe in Christ, you can still have faith and spread the love and joy that Christ hoped to bring to the world.

Iron & Wine – Carousel Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree that the song is about war, specifically the Iraq War. Going off of thejilar's comment that the olive branch is related to the story of Noah...I agree, and thought that it might be saying that even when the dove returns with the olive branch signaling that there is "safety"(we pull out of Iraq/troops come home), the world isn't the same. I think it just emphasizes all the negative repercussions of war...far more than just the immediate death tolls.

John Denver – Rocky Mountain High Lyrics 18 years ago
I always interpreted the "everybody's high" line to be more of an emotional high from the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains (also they are physically high, as the mountains are tall), NOT as a drug reference. I know when I'm standing by them (or for that matter almost any natural wonder) I am filled with awe and intense emotional high that is captured perfectly by this song.

Simon and Garfunkel – For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song shows the potential for love...I mean it's written after a girl he hasn't met, yet it holds such passion. Even thought that seems kind of cliche, it has an endearing quality. The fact that when he wakes up he still feels her near makes me think that maybe fairy-tale dreams might have some level reality.

Simon and Garfunkel – Flowers Never Bend With The Rainfall Lyrics 18 years ago
Very interesting idea dionthaveahome...I never would have thought of it, but it definitely works.
To me this song conveys the potential insignificance of our lives (a theme seen in a lot of s&g music). While this is obviously depressing, I think the song is saying that it's important to recognize reality, rather than continuing to pretend.
Love the line "I can't touch what I feel" - - from a biological standpoint, touching is feeling. However, from an emotional view, feeling is something you can't touch, yet it is what makes our lives what they are.
Overall, amazing song!

Simon and Garfunkel – Song For The Asking Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a beautiful song. It shows how much someone is willing to do for love once they really find it. However, on a darker note, the speaker is clear that they can only give thier song/love if they are asked...you can't just expect someone to give you their all if you aren't forthright with them.

John Denver – Poems, Prayers, And Promises Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is INCREDIBLE! It talks about growing older, and even though I'm not "old", I feel like I'm old enough to see where he's coming from. As you get older, time seems to pass quickly, and you rarely feel time dragging on. In every stage of life, I think the changes can be frightening, yet there is something intriguing and exciting about the future, whatever it brings. The chorus about lying by the fire means a lot to me, because I feel like there are times in your life when you realize how amazing tiny, meaningless moments (like laying around, talking to your friends) are truly something to cherish. Even though your friendships may be mostly based on the past ("how long it's ben since yesterday"), you still have the potential to share your hopes and dreams with them in those perfect, yet ordinary, moments.

Elton John – Rocket Man Lyrics 19 years ago
Regn 89 - this song was released in '72...Elton John publicly announced he was bi in '76 and didn't announce he was gay until after he was divorced (he divorced in '88) So his homosexuality was a secret at the time. But beyond that, this song could truly be about anything...maybe it's just about an astrounaut (I personally don't think so), maybe it's about being addicted to drugs, a touring rock star, or being in the closet. (Voltabolta- I think the 'i miss my wife thing' fits in b/c lots of people have a hard time accepting they're gay and wish they could feel close/have feelings for women)
Everyone has their own interpretation of this, and since Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics, and Elton John sang it, they could have different interpretations. Maybe the feelings Elton John is conveying through his voice is different from what Taupin intended it to mean..which is fine because the whole point of music is to create something different people can interpret differently.

Simon and Garfunkel – A Most Peculiar Man Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with maxwellsmart...I think this song shows how people get dragged down by little differences in others (being shy) and use that as an excuse to look down on them. They can't even be sad about his death without justifying that it was kind of inevitable b/c they viewed him as a wack-job.

Barenaked Ladies – Rule the World with Love Lyrics 19 years ago
I definitely agree with gravity defiant. I think this song shows how we as humans were given the opportunity to rule the world with love ("though it was handed to us we refused to rule the world w/love."). Instead of doing this responsibly, we have screwed it up by misconstruing love to be something you can conquer others with and use it as justification for wars that are in reality doing nothing loving.

John Mayer – 83 Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is SO AMAZING! I have trouble even beginning w/my fav. lines, but i do love "here i stand 6 ft. small" cuz even when though people might think of you as "grown up," it feels like you're still so small and not ready to be an adult.

Deep Blue Something – Breakfast At Tiffany's Lyrics 19 years ago
I listen to this song a lot, and my friends always make fun of me cuz they say it has the crappiest, meaningless lyrics, but I think it shows how desperate people can be when they want a relationship to work where the people don't really have anything in common.

Plain White T's – Hey There Delilah Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song! It's such a great combination of happy love and desperation. "Delilah, I can promise you that by the time that we get through the world will never ever be the same"...love that line...I think it shows the power and hope love brings.

Dashboard Confessional – So Impossible Lyrics 19 years ago
Great lyrics...I think it's my favorite DC song...I took it to mean pretty much the opposite of starcrossedlovers...that the girl is asking the guy all the questions, and he tries to "play it down" by being like i'm scheduled to work, but i'll call in...after that i think it's like his personal thoughts, and he's desperately hoping that they really do have a lot in common, even though they are from completely different and having a relationship seems "so impossible"...but i could be off...that's just what i get from it

Modest Mouse – The World at Large Lyrics 19 years ago
I love the lyrics to this song! I think it's interesting how he goes from wanting to "float on" to being caught in an undertow - - kind of ties in the same water imagery and makes it seem like even if you can't find a place to fit in and want to just float through life, stuff can get screwed up and it's just a vicious cycle of feeling trapped.

serafim is right about
Every place I go, I think of you
Every song I sing, I sing for you
but is wrong about the wedding ring line...John Denver says bring, Mary from Peter, Paul, and Mary says wear.

Lifehouse – Hanging By A Moment Lyrics 20 years ago
I LOVE this song...I totally think it's talking about God. I love the line, "I'll take your invitation" cuz I think it shows how God is always there for us, and it's just up to us to take the initiative and accept Him. Actually, looking at the song, I guess I love all the lines...all in all, just an amazing song!

Barenaked Ladies – Who Needs Sleep? Lyrics 20 years ago
I could be reading too deeply into this, but I think beyond just talking about sleep, this song is talking about wanting anything that people take for granted. Sleep is basic and necessary, yet it can be hard to get for many, while others just view it as a regular, unimportant part of life. There are so many things that we take for granted that are truly a gift, and we really should all "be happy with what you get"

Barenaked Ladies – Brian Wilson Lyrics 20 years ago
I love this song...I love all BNL songs cuz like so many people have been pointing out they seem so simple, but they have deeper meanings...I also think their use of words is phenomenal...Completely irrelevent, but the Pavolov's Dog reference helped me out in psych. since I already knew the song.
