i always experience this strange duality when listening to this song, where even though the lyrical content is completely depressing, i feel a total sense of happiness/euphoria when listening to it. i always thought it was just the instrumentation, but i think i just realized it's because of the title. the narrator of the song didn't realize what they were missing out on until the last possible moment, but if you're alive and able to listen to this song, you can not only realize the meaning but also do something about it. (as cheesy as that sounds) |

In the context of the whole album, which is filled with songs about love, I'm pretty sure this song represents an initial reaction to a breakup. The approaching "bees" are the moment of realization of what's happening. It's a great parallel - if you've never been broken up with unexpectedly, there's an initial feeling of fear when you first see what's coming at you. It's a volatile moment. With this in mind, I think the rest of the lyrics make a little more sense - "I take my time / You take your time" and "And if you need us." are the feelings most people have in this situation, wanting to cling to the relationship ("Let's just take some time and see what happens..."). |

pretty much flawless, lyrically in what it's trying to do. i mean, can you think of any questions they've left unanswered?
the music and production are similarly relentless...i love this song. |

yeah, it's a backwards loop...but so is the original: the beastie boys' "paul revere". (only slowed down) |

i love the thick sound of this song a lot. can't stand the guy's voice usually (and i like a lot of strange vocalists...like joanna newsom..) but on this one it's ok.
these lyrics are pretty inane across the board though. i'm sort of sorry i looked them up now, because it almost ruins the song. maybe i can forget... |

i guess i just saw it as her telling about a lover who was too afraid to face life and love on a day-to-day level.
"couldn't park that fucking car" -- how perfect is the sense of frustration in that line? |

well said, hotsoupwoman. the lyrics really could be called "ambient" (like the music), in that they still have basically the same effect whether you listen closely or not. that's what gives this song such a strong and constant "mood".
if you like this sort of musical/lyrical style combination, you should try listening to the group junior boys. |

It's absolutely amazing the way it sounds like there are a hundred guitar players (especially during the verses). Also, I love how different things stick out when you have the volume at different levels. It's not just "musical artwork" it's "sonic artwork"... |

Unlike "Rebellion (Lies)" and The Arcade Fire, "Shine a Light" and Wolf Parade represent well-developed songwriting. Arcade Fire has some great ideas, but despite all the hype, they don't really carry them out very well. While "Rebellion (Lies)" starts off well, the build-up is pretty bumbling.. |

ok a few comments, especially since nobody has commented:
-"my old friend", not "my only friend"?...i know it's sorta hard to tell with the way she pronounces things, but it also seems to fit better since she later says "new friend"
-I thought of the connection between drums and the American flag being the drums that would be played going into battle in the American Revolution. A drummer would play a very constant beat ("nothing but time") for everyone to march to. But I guess it's a political statement in the second part, when she says "his magic mind doesn't feel anything" because even though those drums may represent something, the connection has lost any meaning. (i.e. patriots still have the drive but not the values)
-oh, and that drum beat underneath is sampled from the beastie boys |

she says "turned you to dust"...not "turned deep to dust". i could be wrong, but it doesn't sound like "deep" at all. |

i love the breathing noises in this song...they combine so well with the beat. |

just a funny thing i noticed - the second line could really be taken as either, "...an ocean of escape..." OR "...a notion of escape...". both lines would sound exactly the same when spoken, and both would make some sort of sense. i don't know if he meant for that duality, but i think it's pretty cool. |

love this song - one comment about the lyrics that are up there though. i swear that i hear, in the part near the end:
"and even when you touch my FAITH
you know your place
and even when you touch my FACE
you know your place"
the two words sound similar, but if you listen closely, there's definitely a difference - a "th" sound ending the first and "s" ending the second.
i think that brings a really interesting meaning to that stanza...the idea of "touching one's faith" is difficult to really describe, but there's an undoubtable strength and "deepness" to the part of her she's describing and how she feels the person she's addressing connects to it.
any thoughts? |
