I think it might say "under silk" instead of "under sail." I think it's describing the longing/remembrance of intimacy, and the "meat against meat" could be the two people "under silk" sheets. |

Drums in this are amazing. Anybody have any idea what it could be about? Im thinking that it could possible be somewhat autobiographical (which is easy to assume because so much of it is) but im not so sure |

That could be it, but the "scales" parts dont really make sense to me. I'd say it would be scales as in the musical definition. Maybe he feels like (or feels like people see him as) a "giant" (not in size, of course, but as in a giant musical success) because of the rising popularity of his music. He writes his songs ("scales"), and watch them be distributed throughout his fans and the music world until it hardly seems like his anymore. Also, maybe the "scales become heavy" to him because his music is so personal, and so playing it over and over can be overbearing. Makes total sense to me, but I could easily be reading too much into it. |

I don't think this is a breakup song. I remember reading somewhere that it's talking about one day in his childhood when he woke up and nobody was home (including his controlling step father). Since his step-father was so controlling, the speaker had no idea what to do because he had become dependant and frightened ("i drank it all because i know how you hate it when i let things go to waste"). He runs outside and the world becomes alive, basically showing new-found independance and freedom from his stepfather. Thus, he feels "like a business man waiting for the train", ready to go out into the world and support himself. Or at least that makes sense to me |
