Can't believe no one's commented on this, one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It's about Ireland, specifically Northern Ireland (Up here we sarifice our children
To feed the worn out dreams of yesterday). |

Not a bad rendition by Van but try Luke Kelly's version for the full effect. Luke sat down with Kavanagh to arrange the words around the traditional tune "Dawning of the Day" whence the line in the song. |

It's about experiences when he was growing up. Going fishing, swimming, the man from across the road gives him poitin - illegal Irish whiskey - which would certainly get you stoned. It's about a great day that wiped him out and all connected to different aspects of water. If you want to get all bullshit-mystical, there's the rain (the sky crying etc), the water in the sea/river (purification, rebirth) and whiskey - the water of life. |

A lovely song beaten to death by Van. A tired, road-weary song of a wanderer in its pure form, this was just wrong, up there with what he did to the beautiful My Lagan Love. That is, he killed it stone dead. |

In an interview I read recently, Fogerty said it was written after watching Devil & Daniel Webster, which is where the hurricane line came from. In earlier interviews he said it was about nixon. |

Absolutely stunning song. Three verses and a guitar solo in 56 seconds. If only everything in life was this perfect. It was also used as the soundtrack to an ad in Ireland in the 80s warning of the dangers of drink. |

Brilliant song, but SLF didn't so the lyrics, they were done by a journalist, whose name i forget. Love the doo-wop breakdown in the middle just before the guitar solo. |

Smoltz is actually Schmaltz, that cheesy, limp-wristed crap white folk were listening to pre-rock n roll. Think Pat Boon. |

The song is Welch's answer to the critics who labelled her unauthentic for her first two albums, saying she had no right to sing bluegrass cos she's from California. This song is her supremely eloquent reply that should have a few music journos jumping off cliffs from shame. nIt's the opening salvo to the best album ever and one that I still listen to daily. |

It's about a man who can no longer communicate with his g/f. Finally sick of her saying "you never talk to me" he unleashes with a voley of things that have built up within him over their time together. he feels better, but she goes mental and he's left thinking "What the fuck? I thought she waanted me to talk to her?" I think cumbersome refers to the fact that she is sick of him and wants to dop other things. This song was on the radio when my wife and I broke up and that's what it will always mean to me. Great song, though and a mighty riff. |

It's about a bloke who ruined a relationship by going to the pub all the time. "trying to be good by not being round" suggests that he spent more time out of the house than in it. A common problem, sadly. |

This is the greatest, most narcotic, hypnotic song I've ever heard. I know what bits of it are about, but overall it has me stumped. The first verse is about Johnny Cash getting thrown out of the Grand Ole Opry for kicking out the footlights during a show, but some of the other references have me bewildered. I've been listening to this song for two eyars over and over again and still it catches me by the heart. |

God, this is one of the most gorgeous tunes ever. I love this song and have done since I first heard it. It is so rarely heard on radio that I had to search out the album and buy it for this one song. |

Me neither. And the only song I know to use the word Horslips. I had this on vinyl and the "straw-rope-foot throng" line had me for years. I hadn't a clue what he was on about. |

Probably the greatest Irish rock song of all, the riff is indeed O'Neill's March (or Cavalry or Cavalcade as it is also known). It's part of a concept album based on the Tain Bo Cuailgne and describes the boastfulness common among Irish warriors of the time, as well as some of the incidents referred to in The Tain. For example, "like the hawk, I'll swoop...." lines refer to CuChulainn's poractice of picking off the invading Connacht armies one at a time. For teh full story go check out www.horslips.ie and check the albums page. Magnificent song, though. |

Numbernine is right. I met Keef once and asked him about this. He said that he wrote the first lines about his young son Marlon and the amount of time he spent away from him. Mick later took it over and turned it into one of the weirdest, but most touching songs the Stones ever did. And it's Mick's best vocal performance since No Expectations. |
