LCD Soundsystem – All My Friends Lyrics 19 years ago
This song changed everything. In my whole life. That's all I need to say.

Gotye – The Only Way Lyrics 19 years ago
Yes, but what does it mean? Intriguing. Is "leaving your life" a metaphor for something?

I think it is too easy to say that this is about the end of a relationship, and consequently I don't believe it is. Perhaps the person he's speaking to is leaving the country, or something similar that would warrant a "new life".

I can't even figure out whether its positive or not. You're right, the song is so damned catchy! It sounds happy, and general sentiment seems to be one of 'things have to change, so this is how its going to happen, and its going to be good' (ie. the stars have aligned, calm down because its nearly over, etc) yet having "everything you were...fade" seems like a pretty massive thing to be dismissive of. Unless you were a real dickhead to begin with.

But anyway I'm clearly talking out my arse here so if anyone wants to shed some light on this one, I'd love to hear more of people's thoughts.

Sufjan Stevens – Seven Swans Lyrics 20 years ago
Wow. These are all great comments, thanks.

I'm sure this has no direct meaning to the song, but the work of poet W.B.Yeats had a lot of swan symbolism. One inparticular - The Wild Swans at Coole - mentioned "nine and fifty swans". The poignant part here is that swans mate for life, so the fact that Yeats was seeing an odd number of swans was actually a reflection on his own underlying fear of being alone as he ages and the yearning for his one love. Whenever I hear this song - my favourite on this album - I wonder whether Sufjan has read Yeats' work or whether he is aware of the "significance" of also seeing an odd number of swans....

Ben Folds – Make Me Mommy Lyrics 20 years ago
What on earth is this????? And here I was thinking I had every record Ben Folds ever made.... Where can I find a copy of this? Sorry to be not making a comment about the song. Uh... I'm taking an educated guess and saying it's about Ben's twins fighting. Seriously, if you have a copy of this, email me ... releasethedoves (at) yahoo (dot) com (dot) au. Ta! :)

Ben Folds – Dog Lyrics 20 years ago
My dog used to do this. Walk the same way from the gate to the back door, until eventually he wore a path. And he'd peek through this little hole in the fence and watch people go by. I think its the most wonderful metaphor, about wanting to stay true to your heart when your brain is too busy trying to over-analyse everything. You should just go the way that is natural, like the dog does.

The Whitlams – Laugh In Their Faces Lyrics 20 years ago
The keyboard player (Tim) wrote this for the guitarist (Stevie) when he was going through a rough patch. Basically: cheer up Stevie, it ain't all bad...

The Whitlams – You Sound Like Louis Burdett Lyrics 20 years ago
Wow. Nothing here either. Yikes.

Louis Burdett was The Whitlams' drummer during the mid-90s. I think here, Tim (our protagonist) is taking a long night out on the town drinking basically. "Geminis love wooden dragons" is a nod to a guy named Peter who was "the band's astrologer" and used to give them handy insights into each other. "Chris don't like madness" is Chris Abrahams. As for the planes, well, they're a given in Newtown. And by the way, it does rain in Tempe.

The Whitlams – God Drinks At The Sando Lyrics 20 years ago
REALLY? I don't know about that...
I think it's just a cute way of saying, the pub at the end of the street has changed, so we move to another one more suited to slow drinking in the afternoon light. For those out of the loop, the song is set in Newtown, Sydney, and the band got their start playing a residency at the Sando. The Shakespeare is now called the Coopers Arms. Both are on King St.

Tonic – Love A Diamond Lyrics 20 years ago
Aw, why hasn't anyone commented on this?

This is my favourite Tonic song I think. Makes my heart swell. I'm presuming the 'diamond' is the girl. So girls, love a man that loves you back.

Sigur Rós – Hoppípolla Lyrics 20 years ago
Oh, wow. I can't believe someone has written the lyrics here. That's awesome. Thank you Silent Assassin. So it is Icelandic, right? Are we putting to bed this whole "Sigur Ros sing in a made-up language" thing? If somebody knows the translation, PLEASE post it here. All I know is that "Hoppipolla" means the equivalent of "Skip, small child" or something of that ilk. Which also explains the video clip of the old people dancing in puddles, and ringing people's doorbells then running away. The music is beautiful, but so is the sentiment.

Josh Pyke – Middle of the Hill Lyrics 20 years ago
Yeah, it's pretty self-explanatory... Go stream of consciousness, go! I guess memory can be like that. You start off remembering your house and suddenly all these things come flooding back. The way he sings its like he's in so much of a hurry to get it all out because the next memory is coming along. I especially like the trains that sounded like people in his head.

Darren Hanlon – Falling Aeroplanes Lyrics 20 years ago
Poor Darren. As a songwriter, I know how tough it can be to feel inspired sometimes. He's at the end of his tether and this beautiful girl tells him that putting his emotions to music is not a waste of time or energy. How we all long to hear that.
By the way, I think it's "the stars and the planets and the clocks did laps", as in, they went around in circles.

Elbow – Station Approach Lyrics 20 years ago
I read that this song was written about Manchester, the city the band hail from. I figure its mostly a homecoming piece (hence, Station Approach); a love/hate with the city. You leave it for whatever reason, and then you come home to the buildings that you know so well that you might as well have built them yourself. But it's possible that something about the city drove you away in the first place... Perhaps you only leave to come back. But yes, 'You little sod' is so endearing, no matter how you look at it!
