Within Temptation – Gatekeeper Lyrics 19 years ago
great song :).

I love the way sharon's voice and robert's voice interchange. Like a voice from heaven interchanges with a voice from hell. Too bad Robert doesn't grunt no more. Looks like all the bands that used to (besides WT, Epica, for example) stopped doing so as soon as they got too popular. But, beside that, it's also very destructive for your vocal tracts :P.

I agree with In the mist. A candle as a metaphor for life. It's my fave WT song. Really awesome. I want people to play it at my funeral :P.

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 20 years ago
I’m truly perplexed that no one has mentioned Plato yet.
If you are familiar with the work of Plato, you know that he had a theory about beauty on earth being a reflection of an abstract template of beauty, residing in the heavens.
Can’t it be that the beauty of the woman in the song led the guy to a spiritual experience?
Particularly these lines suggest this in my opinion:

Your faith was strong, but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya

So, the guy was doubting the existence of God, but when he saw the woman, he knew for sure that God existed. In this way, she acted like a messenger of God.

But, however: after going through the comments here, I have to say that though many people here have submitted interesting considerations, no one seems to have captured the meaning of the WHOLE song, and unfortunately, interpretations of parts of the song often contradict each other.

Moreover: I'm particularly interested in the line:

'all I ever learned from love was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you'.

What does this line mean?
I've always interpreted it as: kill the one who betrayed you, but that does not seem to be in line with Cohen's world-view.

Another suggestion is to interpret the 'somebody' as your competitor in love.

What do you think?

Leonard Cohen – Alexandra Leaving Lyrics 20 years ago
@ Almost Real. I don't think it's about his daughter leaving with her boyfriend. Parents usually don't perceive their kids in sexual terms. It sounds a little incestuous :P
Rather, I think it's just about a man, abondoned by his lover, maybe just a one night lover.

My ex-girlfriend's name was Alexandra. I knew she loved to listen to Leonard Cohen, so someday I went and bought the Essential, for I wanted to know what his music was like. It was back then, when I found out about the song 'Alexandra leaving'. A few days later, she broke up with me... this 'coincidence' always makes me shiver when I hear the song...
