Pantera – Sandblasted Skin (Reprise) Lyrics 16 years ago
Nu metal WAS the target, and it was for nearly the whole album. This came out in 1996 so Kurt Cobain had been dead for two years, and I believe Britney Spears didn't come out until '98 or '99. I doubt Phil had that much of a problem with the grunge scene (he was and is good friends with Alice in Chains), and because no one really knew her outside of being a Mouseketeer, I don't think he had a problem with Britney. Although, I'm sure he does now, especially since she's from Louisiana. This was the post-grunge period and nu metal was taking over the airwaves.

ZZ Top – Brown Sugar Lyrics 16 years ago
When I first heard the song, I just assumed he was talking about getting some black booty, but I suppose he could be singing about heroin as well.

The Velvet Underground – Lady Godiva's Operation Lyrics 18 years ago
It's about a person that goes to get a sex change, but the surgeon is confused, accidentally performs a lobotomy, and kills the patient.

Down – Beneath the Tides Lyrics 18 years ago
This is such an awesome song. Phil is definitely singing about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and those in the government responsible for the mishandling of it.

Eagles of Death Metal – The Ballad Of Queen Bee And Baby Duck Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm pretty sure this is about Josh Homme meeting Brody Dalle, and then the two of them falling in love and making music.

Queens of the Stone Age – Better Living Through Chemistry Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is definitely anti-prescription drugs.

"The blue pill opens your eyes"
I don't think this is talking about The Matrix because it was the red pill that was supposed to show you the truth, but then again, maybe Josh is trying to say that the government wants you to take the blue pill so that you can stay sedated and under control. I don't know.

"A new religion prescribed"
Pill-popping is the new religion because everybody is taking some kind of pill for whatever illness they think they have or whatever some doctor tells them they have.

"To those without the faith
A hero holding a knife"
I think this part is saying that people who refuse to take the drugs prescribed to them opt for a lobotomy. In the 30's through the 60's, psychosurgery was pretty widely prescribed in the U.S. for a variety of reasons from schizophrenia to depression to "youthful defiance"(this would probably be seen as a.d.h.d. today). Look up "lobotomy" on wikipedia.

"And blood is not enough"
Many times when lobotomies were performed, mental retardation was a side effect. I think he's saying that it wasn't enough that you had a hole drilled into your head; you also get your mind permanently altered.

"There's no-one here
And people everywhere
You're on your own"
I'm fairly certain that this is describing a drug-induced oblivion.

I'm just throwing in my two cents anyways; it's some of the many meanings that have went through my head. I like what Hoax said about the song and some of what qotsatrippin said too.

Kyuss – Space Cadet Lyrics 18 years ago
I totally agree with rottenseed, but I do like the other explanation that everyone else has come up with. Josh Homme is quite the advocate of marijuana and mushrooms so it makes perfect sense. Also, he's a 'Space Cadet' because he's either really high or likes to get really high if anybody didn't make that connection.

Mastodon – This Mortal Soil Lyrics 19 years ago
Also, the woman possessed is probably some kind of witch that lives on the mountain or something.

Mastodon – This Mortal Soil Lyrics 19 years ago
On the omen thing: On "Hunters of the Sky" there's a lyric that says:
Omen she brings
Carried on weathered wings
Maybe by 'Omen passed' they are saying that the protagonist has made it past the hunters of the sky. Also the line from Hunters also says 'she brings' so that's probably talking about the woman possessed. Somebody said something about this song being about reflection so the character could be reflecting on the stuff that happened earlier on the album.

On the pollution thing: I don't think that that is what it means, but the line could have a double meaning. You never know. However, pertaining to the storyline, I assumed that it meant something about how men were forbidden from being in the sky with the gods or something. I could be way off, but they did mention something about original storm god. The 'original' part could mean something too though. Maybe a man became the new storm god, and he's saying that men shouldn't have the power of the gods.

I don't know. Let me hear what you guys think.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Cabron Lyrics 19 years ago
ortiz and jayjayjay are right about what Cabron means. It really means big male goat. Among friends, it's not a bad word necessarily (it's like calling one of your friends a bad name but you're joking about it), but among people you don't know, it's a bad word. For example, in English, bitch literally means female dog, but over time, it's become a bad word. And in Spanish, cabron means big goat, but it has now become a cuss word in certain latin american countries.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Red House Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't think that there is any kind of deeper meaning to the song. I think that this was just a straight up blues song and that the focus was really the guitar playing as opposed to some sort of hidden message in the lyrics.

And btw, "Texas Flood" was a cover. It was originally written by a guy named L.C. Davis, I believe. You could definitely say that the guitar playing might be an interpretation of "Red House." Hendrix was a huge influence on SRV.
