Modest Mouse – Ocean Breathes Salty Lyrics 16 years ago
my interpretation of the song is more literal than anything. It mentions being in jail and getting out. It also talks about wasting your life, and why you wouldn't waste your afterlife. I'm thinking he is talking about a person that was in jail and was getting out, but in theory he was hoping to have a better afterlife compared to what his real life was, and maybe being religious, was praying for a better one.

Your body may be gone, I'm going to carry you in
In my head, in my heart, in my soul...

In this i connected it to something of a christian type of thing, how Jesus' body may be gone, but the religion has you carry him in in a sense, in your head heart and soul. then all of the heaven and hell things tie in to the religious aspect.

some part of the song it seems like he is talking about someone he loved, or a memory while he was in prison, about the ocean's breath being salty and both growing old, and he hoped so, like he hoped to still be with them after jail possibly.

You tell me what you want and I'll tell you what you get
You get away from me...

its like at a hearing or something for his release, or a parole hearing or something. He told the judge he wanted to get out with his good behavior or something and he told him what he got, which was an early release.

Good luck
For your sake I hope heaven and hell
Are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath...

Either this is someone commenting on that persons thoughts, or the persons own, almost like that person in jail was talking to themselves. I tend to think its the later, because of the fact he repeated "I had to think a while" in a sense that he had only his thoughts while he was in jail. another thought could be a self doubting thought process, and how he was saying at the beginning how he was wondering if they would both (if religious, the other person could be Jesus Christ ) live again, but he was saying he didn't think so.

Any ways, basically in essence i think this is a song about a person in jail, and someone or that person themselves are picking apart the life of the person in jail. Also i believe there are alot of christian references in the song, even though I myself am not religious.

I hope you all enjoyed my interpretation and rate it highly =D. And sorry if i write too much.
