about the "is it you or me" line... in my opinion, I don't think that it's so much a reflection of the woman's thoughts as j2los suggested, especially since Torquil is singing the line. it seemed to me to be his question to himself as he ponders why he couldn't go through with the initial date. maybe he's wondering if, instead of it being some fault on the woman's part (either emotional or physical), it could be some weakness on his part. and since he hinted at some previous experience with these sorts of things in the third verse ("these things can be heavy..."), maybe this isn't the first time this has happened to him. I think the line brings a hidden emotional depth to the male character in the song, in subtle way that Stars often do. and it's a great contrast between the woman and the man - while she puts herself and her emotions completely out there, he has hidden them all away. orrr, maybe he's just an asshole. great song anyway. |

someone mentioned not really knowing what the beginning of the song meant. maybe I'm just extra-sensitive because I just finished reading Anthony's biography, Scar Tissue, but it seems to have a lot of drug references. "temporary, this cash and carry" "hearts about to palpitate" "death defying this mess I'm buying" maybe it's about leaving that lifestyle behind and moving toward the sort of love you find in a marriage. just a thought! |

One of the reasons I am so in love with Stars is because their Canadian character comes through so easily in their songs. I spent two months in India last summer, and their sweet Montreal accents were like a little piece of home. Anyway, my point was that the reference to "snow" was an example of what I mean. The idea of coming home from "paradise" and finding yourself in ankle-deep snow - very Canadian. And while I'm sure it has other symbolic meanings, it's one of the (many) reasons why Stars has fast become one of my favourite bands. |
