The Jimi Hendrix Experience – My Friend Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is Jimi's best efforts to emulate Bob Dylan.
Note the sentiment of feeling being betrayed is central to much of Dylan's mid 60s electric music (which Jimi was a fan of, hence his numerous covers.)
Also the extensive use of compound words (soap-box door, pearl-handle necktie etc) that was a large part of Dylan's 'Blonde On Blonde' album's lyrical content ('Leapard-Skin Pill-Box Hat' for example.)
And finally, the noise in the a la 'Rainy Day Women#12 & 35'.
This is one of my favourite Jimi Hendrix song, along with 'Burning Of The Midnight Lamps' I think it's his best lyrically.

Robert Johnson – They're Red Hot Lyrics 18 years ago
Does anyone else hear any Lead Belly influence in this song? I don't hear it in any of his other songs but in the spoken lines of the fifth verse he sounds exactly like him.

Bob Dylan – Temporary Like Achilles Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the general meaning is basically summed up in the lines 'you know i want your lovin', honey, but your so hard' - he loves the girl but she's making it needlessly difficult. I think the name Achilles is used to for the guy she's with because he's saying he's not perfect. Maybe about Edie Sedgwich and Andy Warhol?

I don't think the stucture was taken specifically from Worried Man Blues - it's quite standard for a blues song

Bob Dylan – He Was a Friend of Mine Lyrics 18 years ago
Dylan didn't write this one but he does sing it with alot of emotion. It's a traditional so i think it was probably around before Woody Guthrie, and i don't really see the Jesus Christ reference, i think the meaning is straight forward - not many hidden metaphors

Bob Dylan – I Want You Lyrics 19 years ago
Just to correct a mistake in my previous comment i meant to say - 'having said that i don't think there's a single word in this song i don't like'

Bob Dylan – Lay Down Your Weary Tune Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah it's definately not a tribute to Jeff Buckley, it was recorded in 1963 at Dylan's The Times They Are A-Changin' sessions (it wasn't released until 1985 on Biograph), he played it 2 nights later at a show at Carnegie hall - appearently those are the only times he's played this song.

The line 'Lay down your weary tune, lay down' Dylan heard in a hymn - 'I heard the voice of Jesus say / Come unto me and rest / Lay down thou weary tune, lay down'. Also the structure of the song is appearently based upon a song from Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings.

The actual content of the song is based on one of Dylan's first LSD trips, connecting this tune in his head to his surroundings - resulting in some amazing, surreal imagery.

This is one of my favourite songs of Dylan's, it's a shame it was take out of the album The Times They Are A-Changin', not only because i like it so much but it does show the start of a new direction in his creativity and career.

Bob Dylan – Song to Woody Lyrics 19 years ago
I read that when Woody first heard Bob play this he said something along the lines of 'he's going to be a famous folksinger because of his voice - to bad his writing isn't that good'. I thought it was funny that everyone says that Dylan's a songwriting genious - shame he can't sing.

Bob Dylan – Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance Lyrics 19 years ago
Its great the way he sings these lines -

'Well, lookin' for a woman
That ain't got no man,
Is just like lookin' for a needle
That is lost in sand.

Bob Dylan – Corrina, Corrina Lyrics 19 years ago
Although this song is a traditional (popularised by Leadbelly) Dylan put alot into this song, changing almost every line, and you can tell by the way he sings it that it means something to him, i think he had someone in mind when singing about 'corrina'. Also, musically its the most complex song on any of his albums up to this point.

One of the best on his first album. He puts so much energy in this song it always brings a smile to my face.

Bob Dylan – Chimes of Freedom Lyrics 19 years ago
Only Dylan can do this song justice. The imagery in this song is some of his best (and therefore the best ever written.)

'Through the mad mystic hammering of the wild ripping hail
The sky cracked its poems in naked wonder'

I read somewhere that this is considered to be one of his acid songs but i don't think so. I think it's a testament to Dylan's writting skills that people find it impossible to believe that someone could just imagine this.

Bob Dylan – Country Pie Lyrics 19 years ago
this songs, to me, stands out on nashville skyline. a definate one to check out.

'Rasberry, strawberry, lemon and lime
What do I care ?
Blueberry, apple, cherry, pumpkin and plum
Call me for dinner, honey, I'll be there'

'I don't need much and that ain't no lie
Ain't runnin' any race
Give to me my country pie
I won't throw it up in anybody's face'

(just some of my favourite parts)

i sure do 'love that country pie'

Bob Dylan – I Want You Lyrics 19 years ago
This is one of my favourites.

'Now all my fathers, they've gone down
True love they've been without it.
But all their daughters put me down
'Cause I don't think about it'

I like the why he refers to his father's daughters. i don't know why i like that so much but it's always stood out to me.

'Well, I return to the Queen of Spades
And talk with my chambermaid.
She knows that I'm not afraid
To look at her.
She is good to me
And there's nothing she doesn't see.
She knows where I'd like to be
But it doesn't matter.
I want you, I want you,
I want you so bad,
Honey, I want you'

This is my favourite verse of the song (having said that i don't think there's a single word in this song i like). Dylans voice sounds at its best in this song.

Bob Dylan – One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later) Lyrics 19 years ago
I know people are going to hate me for saying this, but i think this is one of Dylan's more 'pop' songs, so i don't think it's as filled with meaning as some of his other numbers. i only say this because the first comment i read said 'Then she was so sad she killed herself' which would kind of put a downer on this song for me, i think i'd prefer to take this song literally, as just a story. Sorry if i'm missing the meaning but i'm happy

Bob Dylan – Time Passes Slowly Lyrics 19 years ago
i think this is one of dylan's underrated song (as are many on 'new morning'). i really like the way he phrases some of the lines in this song, like: 'Stared on out the window to the stars high above/Time passes slowly when you're searching for love'. Any fans of dylan's should definately give this song a listen, its one of those great song that feels more personal because it isn't one of his big numbers. it has a really relaxing, layed back feel with some nice piano work. as for the meaning it seem quite straight forward but i wouldn't put it past dylan to has some cryptic hidden message in there, but it's a great song.

Bob Dylan – Quinn the Eskimo (Mighty Quinn) Lyrics 19 years ago
After reading the comments on this song i read the lyrics throught again, and the verse about 'Nobody can get no sleep' didn't seem to fit in with the image being painted of 'Quinn', so i'm wandering if 'Ev'rybody's gonna wanna doze' is a word play for the drug 'no doze' (Dylan also made a reference to no doze in 'Subterranean Homesick Blues', so it isn't impossible), this would support the drug dealer theory. I like to know if anyone agrees with this.

Bob Dylan – House of the Rising Sun (The Animals cover) Lyrics 19 years ago
Fuck you @ pyros411. I was saying that Dylan can write better songs than this, so HE should sing his own songs. Anyway the point of folk songs being past on, being repeatedly covered, is that you bring a new aspect or you own style to the song, which he didn't do, he used his friend's (Dave Van Ronk) set of chords, so this song was missing the point of folk music anyway. Duh.

Bob Dylan – When the Ship Comes In Lyrics 19 years ago
I just wanted to add to what '5isjusta4letterword' said, as everyone whose seen 'No Direction Home' will know, the story goes that when Dylan was travelling around with Joan Baez on her tour (this was just before Bob was a huge star) and the tour manager refused to get Dylan a room. Joan then used her status, threatening to quit the tour and so on, and eventually got him the room. In the morning Joan Baez went into Bob's room and found out that Dylan had been up all night and had just finshed this song, 'When The Ship Comes In', it apparently sums up his fellings on the people and events, to quote Baez 'Bob was hanging all of them with his eyes'. This is a great song, one of his best written. If anyone has theories on the hidden meanings and criptic metaphor i'd like to hear it.

Bob Dylan – Girl from the North Country Lyrics 19 years ago
i know i'm just being difficult but in the 4th stanza the second line is meant to be 'many times i've often prayed' (i've only pointed this out because that is my favourate part of the song)

Led Zeppelin – The Rain Song Lyrics 19 years ago
sorry i just have an issue with a comment on the first page by 'johnpauljones86', first of all, it wasn't Led Zeppelin's first ballad (you seem to be forgetting a small hit they had called 'STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN'), and as for implying that Page used chords from 'Something' that makes no sense as he wrote a similar set of chords in 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor' when he was in The Yardbirds, so i'm guessing he had ideas for this song long before 'Abbey Road' was released.

Bob Dylan – Positively 4th Street Lyrics 19 years ago
...just a small point to 'Final straw', dylan didn't offend the folk scene by moving from bass to guitar, he stopped playing acoustic guitar and started playing electric guitar which was seen as selling out (even though dylan never claimed to be a folk singer, protest singer or any of the other labels they put on him)

Bob Dylan – Desolation Row Lyrics 19 years ago
i think that 'Desolation Row' isn't an actual place, it's like a metaphor for an emotion. The next thing i think i've worked out, i thought it was pretty obvious but everyone else put different ideas down for it, anyway, in the 4th verse the woman is wearing a iron vest, this is symbolic for her chastity because she is a nun ('she profession is her religon') and whats being said is that it isn't justified because she is sinning by not living her life (as i'm sure her god would want). But to be honest the rest of the mean is over my head but i'm sure it is a great one, this is an amazing song

Bob Dylan – Highway 61 Revisited Lyrics 19 years ago
I haven't really heard any theories on this song which match the ideas that i came up with, but here it goes, i think this song is saying something about America because there are lots of references like the 'red, white and blue' shoe stings and the welfare department, but i'm not really sure what it's saying (i know it's not very helpful but i'm working on it). If anyone can clear this up for me or has just got some mor ideas i'd be grateful for the help.

Bob Dylan – It's All Over Now, Baby Blue Lyrics 19 years ago
This has been the lastest addition to my favourite songs (along with alot more Bob Dylan songs), the line 'crying like a fire in the sun' is just about my favourite lyric ever. When it comes to the meaning of this song i think it could be a mixture of the ideas above, i think when people approach the meaning of the song they expect it to be rather 2 dimensional, by like most Dylan songs i think this should be approached more like poetry, Dylan was definitley intelligent enough to write a songs with mixed meanings.

Bob Dylan – Blowin' in the Wind Lyrics 20 years ago
I think its fairly obvious this song was written about war, but what Dylan did that made this song such a classic is leaving it open to interpretation and not being as blunt as some of his other songs like 'masters of war' (which is still a great song) which means this song is still relivent today and in all different situations

To be honest i preferred the animals version. I think Dylan should stick to his own stuff, i don't really think this song is good enough for him.

Bob Dylan – You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go Lyrics 20 years ago
I was told that when Dylan was writing 'Blood on the tracks' the planned for it to be his last album, and althought the songs have their other meanings they all related to how he felt about leaving the music industry, for example 'Idiot wind' showed bitterness about some of the things that happened to him during his career, but this song is him just saying that he also appreciates some stuff that music has done for him.

Bob Dylan – Knockin' on Heaven's Door Lyrics 20 years ago
Yeah i also think this is a song about war, not only for all the reasons above but in a few different live versions of this song Dylan has put in extra verses with lines like 'i'm sick and tied of this war'

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Rainy Day, Dream Away Lyrics 20 years ago
Around the time this song was written Jimi was being really overworked with no time off, but on the day this song was written the open-air show that he was doing was called off because it was raining, so he got the day off hence 'Rainy day, dream away'

I think this is one of jimi's best lyrically written song(i think it's between this and Little wing), it's got some great imagery like 'Now the smiling portrait of you/ Is still hangin' on my frowning wall' and 'velvet moon'. Great song

Bob Dylan – Positively 4th Street Lyrics 20 years ago
I thought this song was about how all the folk people that he was in with turned on him when he went electric, and he's saying that they were never really his friend and they 'just want to be on
The side that's winning'
