The Presets – My People Lyrics 18 years ago
Refers to Australia's policy of mandatory detention of illegal immigrants.

Top song too. Well written without being to too preachy, yet not patronising the subject.

Lily Allen – Not Big Lyrics 18 years ago
Uninspiring self-indulgent crap. Like most of her songs really.

I was going to call her a slut but she beat me to it : "Let's see how you feel in a couple of weeks,
When I work my way through your mates. "

John Butler Trio – Good Excuse Lyrics 18 years ago
This song really is quite pathetic. OK sure people in third world countries have it a lot worse than us, but JB shouldn't be pointing the finger at people here saying their problems are not important on a global scale. I mean if someone in Australia or any other developed country is suffering from depression you can't just say "cheer up, it could be worse". It tells me John does not really understand mental health issues.

Everyone has their problems. And with this whole 'emo' movement these sorts of problems tend to get exacerbated among today's youth. But if someone has a genuine case of depression or the likes you can't just tell them "it could be worse" becuase that just adds to the problem.

Sandi Thom – I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair) Lyrics 19 years ago
ffs people

1. ok she's a good singer. but in this age of american/british/australian idol we have well established that good singers are not a rare commodity.
2. she didnt write it
3. it's not even that well written. the chorus has a decent enough hook but the rest is gargabe. ( and i don;t mean it's garbage because it lyrics are inconsistant, i mean that it has no subtlety or flow).
4. it really is quite amatuerish. seriously nostalgia is probably the easiest emotion to write about. sure, she's entitled to her opinion about which time period she would rather live in, but the notion that everything was perfect in yesteryear is just stupid. i mean in the 1970s many people would have been saying "things were better back in the 1950s" and in the 1900s people would have been saying "gees i wish i could re-live the 1880s again". it's just a part of human psychology. talk to any old perseon if you dont beleive me.
5. i could sit here and point out all of the contradictions in this song but i think mos tof them have been pointed out before. the fact is whoever wrote this really didn't put a lot of thought into it.

i don't mean to be too harsh becuase i think it's good that the record companies are pushing this wholsome-looking young girl to take the limelight from the christina aguilara/pussy cat dolls types, but really, they're going to have to try harder than this.

Muse – Hoodoo Lyrics 19 years ago
If this song is about politics then the vibe I’m getting is that is could be a song written from the viewpoint of a leader who has been voted out or overran by anarchy after making a disastrous decision. The second half of this album is about anarchy/an uprising with City of Delusion as the climax. Hence this song is the post-mortem by the toppled leader. Hypothetically it could be about Bush/Blair refecting on their decisions after a voter backlash.

“Come into my life
Regress into a dream”

i.e. look at things from my point of view for a moment

”We will hide
Build a new reality
Draw another picture
Of the life you could have had”

They were trying to build a new world by introducing democracy into other countries, the theory being that this will make the world a better place. Therefore they were drawing another picture and hiding from reality.

”Follow your instincts
And choose the other path”

But the voter backlash/anarchy arised and nobody wanted to follow them anymore, and they (the people) chose the left path.

”You should never be afraid
You're protected from trouble and pain
Why, why is this a crisis in your eyes again”

The leaders asking the public “well I was trying to keep you safe. Why are you angry with me? It’s not like war broke out in this country, it only happened far away”

”Taught to be
How did it come to be
Tied to a railroad”

Tied to a railroad being a metaphor for a disastrous situation i.e. Iraq showing no signs of stabilising years after the attempt to bring them peace.

”You'll have to set us free
Watch our souls fade away
Let our bodies crumble away
Don't be afraid
I will take the cold for you”

i.e. I will take responsibility for all the s*** that’s gone on because, after all, that’s my job as your leader.

”And i've had recurring nightmares
That I was loved for who I am”

In other words he’s dreaming that the public would lay off him because he thought he was doing the right thing and he was a genuinely good person. After all, if Iraq had have run smoothly with few casualties no-one would be complaining. But there was no way for them to know that things would turn out this bad. Our leaders are human too.

”And missed the opportunity
To be a better man”

Fairly self explanatory, he is wondering what could have been and what he could have done differently, as we all do after we stuff something up.

"Let's conspire to ignite
All the cells that would die just to feel alive"

Could this bit be about sex? it is after all a love song. matt wants to ignite his sperm i.e. cells that most of which will die just to be that one in a billion sperm that will create life.

Tool – Lateralus Lyrics 19 years ago
anyone pick up on the lyrical similarities to radiohead's "everything in it's right place"?

the song tells the story of kid a's birth and he says "there are two colours in my head". the two colours, presumably black & white, demonstrate how at birth our perceptions are somewhat pure and defined, whereas it's not until we grow older that we pick up on the grey areas.

here maynard tells us that he starts by seeing in black & white (i.e. right & wrong, optimism & pessism etc) and then later sees more colours - red (blood, voilence possibly?) and yellow (unsure what yellow is supposed to represent).

it's probably not a definite connection between the two songs, after all, i doubt MJK is a radiohead fan. but i just thought i'd share my thoughts and wondered if anyone else picked up on it

Gyroscope – Fast Girl Lyrics 20 years ago
no comments already? c'mon guys!

This one hit me when i was listening to it the other day. i reckon daniel has become involved with a girl but she was rushing in to it too quickly and taking things too fast (hence the title "fast girl" and "Are you this involved in everything"). anyway he was feeling crushed by this relationship "I can’t breathe" and could see it was going nowhere "Knew it couldn’t last well".

and then it looks like he needed to get out so the quickest way to do that was to hook up with someone else, but it looks like he's regretting it "I can’t believe just what I’d done.
Did you put something in my drink?
Jealousy..."
