| Dave Matthews Band – Proudest Monkey Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I think he's using the evolution of monkies to humans (though it was really what, a chimp? that evolved) as a metaphor for his personal evolution throughout his life... He left his easy life (maybe as a child) and grew up into the person he is now, which i think is obvious like everyone else said. But I'm suprised no one has commented on his use of the clishe 'monkey see, monkey do' yet. To me, it seems he's almost mocking society by using it. Its like he's saying 'I see people doing things this way so thats what i think i have to do, so i set out to do it... now i wonder if i would have been happier in my old life, but i'm so good at what society tells me i should do, i guess i'll have to deal with it now that i'm here.' And i guess that attitude fits for a globally-known musician... life before being famous vs. his life now, and he sort of feels like his life now is a little transparent... and it became that way because of 'monkey see, monkey do'. just a thought. i |

I can see it being about Iraq... But I think its meaning transcends to living with any hardship imposed on you by society. Everyone should want bad things to change. |

| Ben Harper – Waiting for You Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I see this having 2 possible intended meanings-- 1. waiting for Christ to come back because I know B.Harper is a big religous guy; 2. waiting for someone sick to get better, based on: 'I've been hoping for you What else can i do But keep hoping for you You can kill a lot of time If you really put your mind to it or leave it all behind and never go through it ' or the more obvious and relatable to everyone... 3. he's having a hard time getting over a past love. I think (2) makes the most sense. |

| Fiona Apple – Sleep to Dream Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Interpretations are just that-- interpretations. people can think what they want, and as long as they can back it up then its just as real as your own feelings about it. and on that note, i love this song. I personally take "ive got my feet on the ground, i dont go to sleep to dream" as she knows the truth about the world--she isnt in a fantasy, like most of you said. And yes, sleep is practical. But I understand what a lot of you mean by sleeping to escape reality-- sometimes you just want to sleep and make a hard day end. would you rather be conscious and see everything, or would you choose to be unconscious and ignorant to how bad the world is, and just go to sleep? she's definitely a realist. |

ahh i get it now. though for me its kind of mocking society... the chorus mostly... "Give us something familiar Something similar To what we know already That will keep us steady Steady, steady, steady, steady Steady going nowhere" reminds me of people who are afraid of change, but feel trapped by routine. a little hypocritical, isnt it? but so is life. love its truth. |

Beautiful song, yes. As for its intended meaning... I think it is about keeping something socially unacceptable a secret, like one's sexuality or something like that. mostly because of the first line in the 2nd verse..'Pacific to Eastern we're bordered and hated' but as for its personal meaning to me... I agree with skyblue that 'hiding' could mean retreating from the drama of every day life. Though still that line (Pacific to Eastern we're bordered and hated) is problematic... |
