Green Day – Jesus of Suburbia Lyrics 18 years ago
i didnt read it all, but i thought this song was about anti-angst lol. like, he saying, no more excuses, about being a 'broken' and 'effed up' and using it as an excuse to stay there in that decadent 'place' and that 'victimized' state of mind. and using that as an excuse instead of believing in themselves and doing something for themselves to change the situation? because as he said "no one is perfect." everyone has problems and stuff they deal with. and people expecting him to stay like that as he has 'sold out' if he doesnt or is successful and not being a 'screw up' or insecure anymore/ broken the continuous cycle that pervades the whole mentality of his town and continues to be passed down. about also the thinking they are insane and a hopeless case, and that they are victims, and this is their life, so they must die like jesus for the sins of (their parents? society?) and they will too, if they think that way. but it will be for nothing, because this sort of conformist, perhaps "punk" mentality is 'make-believe', it is not rebelling against what the 'others' think, they are not rebelling against the world, but buying into the lies that taught them that they were hopeless cases etc. dunno if i explained that right...that's how i read this song anyways...

Nelly Furtado – Say It Right Lyrics 19 years ago
i like how her songs seem to be of the subconscious or something, and like, having barriers, but also like sort of dropping those barriers. this seems to be sort of like that. like, about lots of things. but to focus on the meaning from the chorus. it seems like, she has a lot of potential within her and a lot to offer, but she is unwilling to open up to a person probably if it doesn't mean anything to them and there is a possibility to care deeply about them, to love them, show her "real" self, be inspired by them to create and grow from it, "from my mouth, i could sing you another brick, that i laid" and show it to them, like in her music or just in her life or whatever and the last lines, does seem to be about sex but also her true deep thoughts and self, like that is all in her. But she isn't going to let them "mean everything to her" if they don't care, or aren't like straight up or being honest or real or true, or they playing games or are afraid, or don't realise this, like if they don't "say it all" or "say it right" and she won't care because they will just miss out on that though she kind of yearns for it, but she could find someone else maybe. and that even seems to be about the music industry a bit and other things, perhaps? okay, i don't know if any of that makes sense but, well, it seemed to make sense before when i didn't actually try to explain it lol but yeah, it seems to be about her potential and also seems a bit defensive.

Nelly Furtado – Legend Lyrics 19 years ago
hmmm, wow, i never thought of it that way before. i really like this song, i really like all the metaphors and imagery and stuff cuz im a nerd like that :p.

but i thought it was about how she loves someone but she doesn't want to because he wants "everything", like he wants to be powerful and have everything...and everyONE, and he is like, sort of seduced her before or something and is with her, but not really.

Like because he is kind of a player, or a "smooth-operator" or a "ladies man" kinda guy, or just realised that he was capable of that, or he is cheating on her or something.

And maybe he used to love her, and gave her his individed attention or something or he made her feel like it, but now he doesn't because he is on some power-trip now. But she still loves him, as she says "He makes me feel, like you used to".

Though she wishes that they could still be like only the two of them, like how she says, "will you open the door for me if you believe in chivalry", like if it's real what they have...like it seems like a metaphor like for closeness or something, like to "let her in."

Because still wants him to want her and only her, like to be like the "sun" in his world, or the "legend" or "star" or whatever, and "burn hot like that sun". and she hates that she isn't and she doesn't want to show it, like, how she sings, "And like a fickle flower when it first sees the light, I cannot show just how I fight". Even how she refers to herself in third person like it's not about her until like the end.

and so that whole thing, about the "legend who rises and then falls" seems to basically sum it up. Like she is like "legend" or the "star" in his world to begin with, but then she "falls" or is no longer his only interest.

Le Tigre – Eau d'Bedroom Dancing Lyrics 19 years ago
i thought this song was cool, because on the surface it could easily be like interpreted as like "naughty" :p but upon closer inspection, it's like, it is actually a very innocent song about dancing in your room (at least that is what I think it is?), and very like private, like in a zone, and it's weird like, it's like, it is almost making fun of the audience? lol. and also like, in doing that, it can also like question the way things are often interpreted or taken as, like it is assumed that it would be like "sexual" as like that is often what is used to market female pop-singers or musicians as such, and also like especially because like there can be a lot of pop songs that are like the reverse, where it's disguised and marketed as "innocent" or whatever, but has a totally different message. i don't know, i think I explained that in a really confusing way lol, but that was just what i got from it but newayz..

Blink-182 – Here's Your Letter Lyrics 19 years ago
haha man this song full reminds me of the time when my besterest friend that I had known for 7 years and I had like full started to drift apart it wasn't funny, because our lives had changed, and we were both growing and changing, especially him, cuz his life was totally changing, where I was more or less in the same place because i thought i'd figured things out earlier. newayz...yeah, that pretty much sums it up, like the break-down of connectivity, and man, did that totally suck. like i'm normally pretty indifferent but that was like, full emo, lol, like my whole world changed, it was the worsterest thing lol...

and it was like you just wished there wasn't this awkwardness and tension, this wall, and it was like tearing you apart on the inside like, and it's like you wish you could just get rid of it all, "let go", like "fuck i can't let this kill me, let go...i need some more time to fix this..." and it's weird cuz you like you try, like "here's a letter for you, but the words get unglued, and the conversation dies" like, i dunno, what to say in your head or wrote down or whatever, but when you try to say it in person, it somehow comes out all retarded and... it's hard.

and like you feel like you need more "time" but then it's like "let go" so it's conflicting. and you like just so want things to be the same, just "normal", like, and you wonder like "do you still feel the same way?" but it never will be, well, not the same, anyway.

but yeah, everything, all the lyrics, that was like, what it felt like, lol. especially, crazily enough, that last verse..:s

so yeah, i reckon s'about breakdown of friendships/relationships and like yeah, communication problems and stuff

yup, another song about the band breaking up. this album should be called like the post-break-up-syndrome or something, lol. but neway, yeah, i think this song is pretty self-explanatory, especially the chorus. it seems like they tried to talk about it, and it was really tense or something...neway, yeah, i know that is just speculation. but yeah, it's like, he's saying, you don't have to explain why you want to leave the band or whatever, i get it, just hurry up and go then, sort of thing. like giving him the cold-shoulder. i like that line: "And sometimes at night I feel I’m just a broken vessel
An instrument with a darker purpose"
and with the line "I’m at the throat of the young and the helpless
Because they’ve got nothing to say" I think maybe he felt he almost had to live up to a "role" in a way to his teeny-bopping fans in general because they expected him to be like a certain way? or he just feels has to because he is supposed to be their "voice"? this song seems pretty bleak and sort of bitter and cathartic.

i think when ur friends with someone for so long, and u were really close and then u feel it fall apart, when things change, and want different things, feels like they are moving on to "something better" it really eats at you. and it hurts obviously. and you would feel betrayed...

and i think he's like, trying to come to terms with it, and resents it...
and the line..."I love the way you breathe inside my head
But something's got to change" makes things worse because it's like, memories of him and he probably influenced his personality as well, because they have been friends forever. But he's full like, fine, whatever, lol. like, "I never meant to say I'm sorry
And I'm not sad to see you go"

wow, i think the mothership has finally landed in his head and now he's some crazy cult leader :S well he did say he believed in aliens...now i see why :p
still gotta love em but...A for "Effort" and the "Encouragement Award" :p
as for someone saying he was replaced by a girl, what is wrong with a female singer? she has an awesome voice...
like, she actually knows how to sing (no offence to Tom but, he doesn't exactly have a strong voice lol, but it's...endearing?) and when i first saw the clip i was like wtf cuz i thought he was like a little anime girl or something with that hair, lol.

Peaches – Hit It Hard Lyrics 19 years ago
hmm i dunno, i think you might be wrong there, alisalei . like, that is just being pure dirty minded.i mean, obviously the underlining theme here is it's about someone choking on food in a restaurant, and peaches, the saint that she is, has come to rescue them by performing the Heimlich
maneover. but then, we see, she isn't so good because, it's only part of her masterplan as she knew they would choke as she even convinced them to "chew the fat" and "take her apples and bob for them" so she could rob their jewelry by hitting them. it's just, it's so deep. *tear*

all i can say is...aahahaha!

but omg, that would be so funny to actually try those lines in real life like "I've lost my phone. I'm pregnant. I've got herpes, no syphalis. Aids...Yeah, I forgot my Vagisil." cuz well..the "lesbian" one gets old. :p Though I really DON'T have a mobile phone :P hahaha i think what that song is about prolly happens to a lot of people lol. cool song. that bit "are you stupid or just a little slow" is funny as well and the way the song done and written is pretty cool, like the imagery and stuff. awesomeness. ten points!

hahaha this song is funny. it's so cheeky. loves it. she's so bitchy and opinionated, but that's part of the charm and what makes it funny. and I mean, come on, do all songs have to be "deep"? like, there's a song for every occasion...though i reckon it's kinda deep in a weird way, though not one you'd want to intellectualize

Actually I think it could be like saying the messages that society teaches because she says "it feels so good, it must be wrong," saying that they aren't allowed to be happy, and showing how that is stupid and makes no sense, like why the riotgrrl slogan/philosophy thing says the opposite: if it feels good, then it IS good as long as you're not hurting anybody or yourself

Gorillaz – Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head Lyrics 19 years ago
I think a lot of these interpretations could be correct. I agree with lostlo's interpretation the most though. And I thought it reminded me about Tibet and the whole Tibet situation.

For example, how the 'happyfolk' lived "at the foot of a great mountain" and "their very existence was a mystery to the rest of the world, obscured as it was by grey clouds." That's like how Tibet seems really cloudy because of all the snow and climate and it is "the Rooftop of the World". The 'great mountain' could be like the Himalayas.

And they were pretty cut-off from the rest of the world, unaware of the all the effects of the growing modern global world, westernization, and political issues and everything, and being disconnected from it allowed their non-violent Buddhist culture to thrive because "Here they played out their peaceful lives...unaware of the excess of violence and litany below..."

This also made them somewhat naive and vulnerable however, and so when the Chinese government sent soldiers to Tibet, at first they acted like they weren't threatening.. like how they came in 'camoflage' and 'dark sunglasses' with 'aeroplanes" and "You see, without the truth of the eyes, the happyfolk were blind.." A lot of people were killed as well, like shot, I think like it was 1.2 million so far, to try to force the Tibetans to agree that they were a part of China and and they tried to wipe out their Buddhist culture, destroying most of the sacred Buddhist monasteries temples that were like centuries old like "they stumbled upon the place where all good souls come to rest...they coveted the jewels"...these monasteries also had lots of jewels and sacred statues and stuff that the Chinese government pretty much looted..and it could be like what lostlo said, like the 3 jewels.

The landscape also seems pretty important to the Tibetan people and it's culture hence the importance of the mountain. And this could be a bit off but even like how the mountain is called "Monkey" that is sort of like how according to a Tibetan Buddhist legend human beings weren't first created with the world but a Buddha of compassion sent his incarnations to Tibet and one took the form of a macaque monkey who took strict vows of celibacy but then heard cries of some other thingy and they married and had 6 children became the six inhabitants of the universe which were the first the first Tibetans.

The Tibetan government did try to stop the invasion of China like trying to get help from the US and Britain to say they were a sovereign country and despite their power, they didn't really do much to help or seem to care much, probably because they were content and they wouldn't have really anything to gain. That could be like "Where were you when it all came down on me?"

But Tibet could just be one place that fits into this song, the song could be about all the many other issues happening around the world as well that a lot of people aren't aware of as a whole, like because it says they began to "mine" the mountains and yeah, that's like the jewels in Africa, and like with globalization and westernization occurring, how it is like taking over, exploiting and wiping out less powerful civilizations in order the benefit the powers-that-be and people aren't really aware of this. Or the U.S with the media, and the war in Iraq...so yeah...this song, I think it is about a lot of things and it's a reflection of the times...

Sleater-Kinney – Modern Girl Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, how she says her life is like a picture of a sunny day reminds me of an advertisement or something, that's the image I get from it. I agree with pretty much what everyone says. It seems to be about how her 'life' was totally empty and not real because it revolved around what the media said and about consumerism, trying to keep up with the latest things, which were also like distractions from real life and feelings and all these things were supposed to bring her 'happiness' or whatever that she was trying to 'buy' eg 'I took my money and bought...'. Because when she 'couldn't buy nothing' it made her 'angry' and 'sick of the world.' But it never really was 'real' or like herself, it was detached because it was all artificial because it's like she was commodified. Even the line 'My baby loves me/ I'm so...' I don't know, it seems like she was telling herself that because that's kind of what she was taught to believe was important like maybe through images and ads but then like the next line after it seems like unrelated and not make much sense like because her baby loves her it makes her happy and so she buys a T.V? And how it's like 'my baby loves me/I'm so hungry' or 'angry", how would that make her 'angry' or 'hungry'? But it always leads to her wanting to 'buy' something. It seems images in ads or something, how they use images of 'happy' people or 'happy' couples or 'love' to sell items to make people think they need it and so buy it, or maybe buying hoping to become like what the image shows. And the line, 'I'm sick of this brave new world' isn't that like a reference to the book 'Brave New World' by Huxley (I think even one of the characters who was obsessed with Shakespeare, who was a Savage, said that about 'civilisation' when he went there sarcastically (?? I can't really remember if it was sarcastic or he didn't but it was ironic but anyway) and cuz it seems to have like similar or the same themes and like about mass-consumerism and social-conditioning and also has a kind of creepiness about it like the growing 'modern/'civilised'' world which isn't really what it seems to appear as in it's not so 'modern and civilised' cuz it's like the song, devoid of real 'life' and 'feeling' and 'humanity' and it kinda reminds me of that character Lenina and even kinda John the Savage's (I think that's his name, I can't remember cuz it's been a while since I read it) mother, who used to live in the 'modern world' and was miserable because she was never able to return, before she died.

Oh yeah, if someone doesn't like their 'principles' or whatever, then no one is making you listen to them. But think about it, feminism still seems to get a bad rap by a lot of people these days. This in itself just shows how there are still prejudices about it and it's all taboo so there's still some way to go. And abortion isn't legal in South Dakota anymore, and there's eleven other states in America still pending on whether it should be made illegal which I think is pretty scary that it's going backwards. But whatever, you just discredited your argument anyway by calling everyone 'assholes.' Then saying you weren't 'close-minded'? Right. Maybe you just have to learn a bit about it and anything else for that matter before totally writing it off.

Le Tigre – Deceptacon Lyrics 20 years ago
I love this song. I think it's about a lot of things. It's so frantic and urgent and desperate. It's like a release, breaking free from expectations, sterilization and conformity of like society and big corporation people and powers that be and just totally tearing those expectations apart and rebelling against it.

Because it's totally draining her individual self -'sucking my heart out of my mind.' It's also like the trends how they are always changing like 'I'm out of time, I'm out of fucking time.' But that line is also really frantic, claustrophobic and ambitious. Like she doesn't just want to be idle and waste her time doing nothing or what is expected.

And she mocks and challenges those expectations like 'Wanna disco, wanna see me disco/ Let me hear you depoliticize my rhyme' And I like the part where it goes 'everything you think...and feel is alright' coz I think afterwards when it repeats she means 'all right' as well. So it's like whatever 'the man' or those powerful people want or need, or advantages them is all that matters, nothing else, they can't see beyond themselves.

And so they expect others to be a certain way that pleases, suits or advantages them and just reap all the benefits but they 'don't wanna be on yr knees' because they are selfish or self-absorbed, thinking that they are superior and can want and take everything that they need. But because it's them that wants it all and keeps taking like a little kid who can't see beyond themselves or a 'parrot' they are actually also at the mercy at those they are taking from because they need it so they have degraded themselves in a way. But yeah, I think this is getting too long lol
