I knew it was based on the book... And I almost named my first daughter "Charlotte Sometimes". My husband used a veto on that one though. I can understand though, why many people didnt know it was about the story... Here in much of the USA, it is not hugely popular and you likely wont end up having even heard of it unless a friend tells you about it or lends you a copy. The bookstores here rarely have it and none of the new libraries have it. It is not in the reading ciriculum of almost any schools. It isnt somthing everyone would know so I cant see why the name calling is necassary... |

| The Cure – A Man Inside My Mouth Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Okay, it is 7, he is grey, damp, and sore; and has a man in his mouth. I thought it was pretty obvious what went on that night... At least one thing was obvious; THERE WAS A MAN, in his MOUTH. Um, I didnt think anyone had to think that one thru, but lets do it for the sake of doing it, and so that those of you who didnt get it can see what you may have not seen previously. I tend to agree a bit with Davidbeauy... However, Robert did alot of herion and coke too I believe, back in the 80's... And like many rockstars, I think women and drugs were something that he was overindulging in; as many musicians tend to do with thier new found fame, though I think Robert got it out of his system fairly fast in comparison to many other rockstars, but not before having the lifestyle bite him in a$$, and this would be the story of the day his world bit him in the a$$. Though I am certain the song is mostly impressionistic and fictional, it is likely a very very exaggerated version of somthing that really happened to him or someone he knew. Anyone who did that much dope ended up eventually in a situation to some degree, that they felt they had lost control over and ended up awkwardly wishing they'd just stayed home the night before... This seems like a story about one of those moments, and I am sure Robert used some literary embellishment or poetic justice to make it really shocking, dramatic, surreal, and stand out. But I am sure it is at least based on or inspired by one of those drug binges that went too far... It seems he came close to overdosing: "I woke up at seven and my body was vibrating I was wrapped up in a blanket I was grey Damp and sore The bedroom was an engine and my heartbeat was erratic (Like I think I'm at the racing Like the night before)" A reference to an overdose of speed or coke perhaps... And of course herion adds to surrealism, and so much of what he remembers is so surreal. Okay, again, it's 7, he is damp and sore, and...he has a man in his mouth. To put it bluntly: I dont know about you, but I know if I wake up with a man in my mouth, I am unwittingly giving oral gratification. I am fairly certain that the 'man' Robert (or at least the character he is in the song)has in his mouth is not an inner voice, not a memory he holds deep inside, and certainly not a gnome either. Ive always assumed that in this song he, or the character he is speaking(singing) as, was dangerously high and close to overdose. At first, he was seriously doped and they were having an orgy of sorts was with (what he thought were) two girls. Then he seems he's lost his normal inhabitions almost entirely, just as he begins to question if both of the women are real: "I remember one girl standing One was sitting on the ground One was holding me up The other pulling me down And I couldn't decide which one was real Because there wasn't a sound" Why would one be real and not the other??? Seems perhaps he may have started to doubt the sex of one of them by then, but wasnt even sure which one was possibly not a girl. I guess if they both looked like girls, one may want to hear the voices of them to figure it out, but, if no one was speaking, because they could not say anything, as it is likey that all mouths were uh... busy... then it would be hard to decide which one was real and which one was maybe not really a girl at all. The drug effects progressed till he lost his ability to know completely what was going on, and then eventually he looses conciousness; not like as in passed out, but as in a drug induced blackout where he is unaware of most everything and doesnt remember much of what he did while in that blackout, but the recallections do come, slowly and vaguely. In the following lines I see suggestions that one of those recallections is that may have orally gratified a male earlier: "So I was sucking I was sucking like a fat lady would" Then, um... seems couldnt handle the messy result of doing so; if you catch my drift... Hence this line: "But I couldn't hold it down another second (Bleagh!)" So he was feeling like a stud with at least two women at once, almost fighting over him. He wakes up with a man in his mouth, and slowly begins to recall what may have led up to that. He recalls sucking, and posing for photos, and eventually it was quite appearant that he wasnt the only man there... I think it is also possible that the dope made him so messed up, that one of the girls was a guy the whole time but he didn't really realize what all was happening until we awoke... with a man in his mouth... At that point, he knew there was a man there, and I think possibly it was one of the girls. Dangerously high , the good time went further than he'd expected it to and he ended up doing things he wouldnt normally do, essentially being taken advantage even if the others involved didnt purposely drug him or rape him, he certainly was not himself or in his world over the course of the evening. Photographs taken only make him feel exploited. The "Like I was pregnant again" line is odd. I cant help but wonder if this wasnt a line meant to illustrate that A) He was so messed up that he would even forget who he was and what he was doing, and B)THis is not the first time he got that wasted and ended up in confusing circumstances that led his mind the the most bizarre reaches ever thought possible by even the biggest dope fiends in history... C) That he was going from incredibly high to totally incoherant and at that point had actually started blackout mentally... Or, it may be some odd little tidbit he is alluding to from some strange literary work or obscure film, he does that kinda often. It is important to note he does not come across disgusted, like a homophobe, but shocked, because he hadnt expected what happened, and he was maybe misled by one of the women who wasnt a woman at all... He wasnt prepared, wasnt expecting it, wouldnt normally get that kinky, and the awkward emotions coupled with the physical malease he feels from the high drug levels trying to exit his system leaving with a regretful, miserable, and exploited feeling that is short lived, because it is either over, just begining, depending on what you may make of this line: "This wont hurt at all" I dont know. I guess he may be saying it sarcasticly to himself as he is about to leave, and he was talking about the sting that he is sure to feel when he is totally sober, still confused about what he may have done, and the pictures are circulating... OR,( and this is my guess, )he hears 'this wont hurt at all' just as he is starting to totally realize that he has a man in his mouth, and one may assume, that the man was about to leave his mouth for another more sensative orrafice... Or it could be another allusion to some literary work or movie I am not familiar with or I just havent put 2 and 2 together yet. |

| The Cure – Fascination Street Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Yes, New Orleans...sex, and most specifically, fellatio... Oh it's OPENING time... "Like I like you to scream But if you OPEN YOUR MOUTH Then I CANNOT be responsible For quite what goes in OR TO CARE WHAT COMES OUT SO JUST PULL ON YOUR HAIR Just pull on your POUT And let's move to the beat Like we know that it's over If you slip going under Slip over my shoulder... So pull on your hair Pull on your pout CUT THE CONVERSATION JUST OPEN YOUR MOUTH..." Yeah, I think one can get a clear picture of what exactly his fetish du jour was on that hot night down on Facsination Street. He really really wants to pull on her hair, pull on her pout. He's paling and begging... He wants her to cut the conversation, yet, OPEN her mouth, and he doesnt care what comes out... Naughty Robert, naughty. Fascination Street is an okay name for a vagina, but Sheena Easton's "Sugar Walls" were better. Besides, as I stated already, it is clear that her vagina is not the place he is oh so fixated on while on Fascination Street. "Cut the conversation" just means he isnt in the mood to talk, men usually arent when they are with someone who is wearing somthing that gets the response "Oh! I like you in that!"... A compliment like that rarely means "I cant wait to discuss the e of existentialist ideas of Sartre and Nietzsche over a nice southern sweet tea with you." It has little to do with whether or not the relationship is good or bad, or if there even is one after tonight or not! He isn't 'making love' either, and if he'd heard it said while 'pulling on her hair' his mood would have been ruined. He was feeling kinky, not romantic. I think what was fading and paling was his mood, as well as his chance of getting 'any' if she didnt "cut the conversation and get out for a bit"... "To kick the last nail in" is not phallic I dont think actually. "The last nail" is usually short for "the last nail in the coffin", which is like the deed that seals the deal, means it is over, the last straw like the straw that breaks the camels back... He wants the small talk and beating around the bush(no pun intended)to be over with, OVER. He wants her to help him kick that last nail in, so they can get down to business. Thats what I get anyway... I dont think he would want her to kick his penis in... No, really, he just wants her to shush and open her mouth and move to the beat, and probably would be less than thrilled to have his penis kicked in... Even if he didnt mean it litereally, it still isnt a pleasant metaphor for what a man would like a gal to do to his wee wee. I think he would have worded the nail part different if it was specifically about nailing, screwing, or his penis at all. The rest of the song isnt even so much about his penis, he is super interested in her mouth, and one can assume that his penis is as well and that they both want her to open her mouth... He likes her to scream, but... he'd rather have her screamer occupied at the present time. He is in a specific mood. We all get that way... When I was in Savannah one night, I wanted shrimp and scallops and wouldnt settle for anything else, not chinese, not pizza, not a hot dod, just good ol' shellfish... I like chinese, but I was in Savannah, and my mood was for the local cuisine, so, it was GOING TO BE Shellfish. You know, sometimes you know exactly what you are in the mood for and all the love making, pizza, and talking in the world arent gonna change it. It can wreck your night if you dont kick the last nail in, and be frank and up front about what exactly it is you just gotta have or your night is a faded wasted let down, yes? I see no reason to assume that hookers are involved. One can draw the conclusion if they want I guess, but the red light district there can make you want trashy sex, but you can get that from your better half, or a girl you met 30 minutes ago at the oyster bar who is not a crack ho, looks fabulous, and wont charge you by the hour. Alot of people have erotic experiences in sultry and sexy places like New Orleans without actually hiring anyone... Trashy sex is good, but it's better when it is with someone who isnt really very trashy. The redlight district sets up and ambiance and mood, and if you arent famous, or at least decent mannered nor tolerable to look at, then you may have to purchase someone to indulge in that mood with, otherwise, you can get a free, cleaner someone who is doing it because they want to as bad as you do, not because they need to make the money to bail out Bubba the boyfriend... Or maybe he got a hooker. Who knows, men are odd creatures. It is one of the greatest songs ever though... I dont want to hear the metal version someone mentioned... I really, really dont want to hear it. |

As I said in my earlier comments, I did at once think it was possibly about abortion or miscarriage. That was the first 2-3 times I heard it. After the third time, when I really listened to the lyrics, I realized it couldn't possibly be about a pregnancy of any literal kind; not an abortion, not a miscarriage, and not infanticide. The following lines show that this is not a fetus and not an infant: "That blue-eyed girl She said no more That blue-eyed girl Became blue-eyed whore Down by the water I took her hand Just like my daughter See her again" How on earth would this have anything to do with a pregnancy or fetus? And how likely is it that a baby could disobey and "see her again"? I don't see why/how it would be about any literal murder or death at all. All the talk of fishes at the end of the song should show just how very symbolic the song is. Same as the blue eyes, I dont see how literal blue eyes would have anything to do with anything relevent to anything else she says. Severedvox basicly said what I was trying to say, only doing so neater and more to the point, lol. I hadnt noticed Severed's interpretation when Iposted or I would have just said that 95% of what he/she said is what I would say too... And I could have saved myself so much time! What Raul7_7 said is interesting too... The fact that she grew up with boys down by the water was somthinig I did not know, but it helps explain why the water meant so much to the "story" of her sexual maturation. Growing up with boys and penis envy also explains why she is so focused on the 'girl' and the 'daughter' whilst discovering her sexual self; they aren't just great metaphors, but they have a real almost literal purpose as the metaphors as well. That just enriches the symbolism even further. Very cool. |

I do not think this song has to do with any sexual abuse in it's literal context. 'Daughter' is symbolic. What is a daughter but a young girl that a woman has created, held within her, birthed, nurtured, and will protect at all costs? When we are little, our main role in our world is the role of daughter, and when we become older, we become sexual beings, girlfreinds, wives, employees, etc, and rarely stop to think of ourselves as our parents daughters... When a girl is a small girl, she has never been a mother, an aunt, a teacher, or anything esle. She is a daughter, an innocent, curious, naive, daughter. Women often unintentionally try to keep thier daughters innocent and to themselves, forever, and in a subconsience attempt to do this, women often sheild thier daughters from the joys of life as they can present a threat to the daughters well being or mothers fear that they may; like sexual pleasure, men(women), and outside influences. Rarely done for any reason other than love, but very oppressive to the daughter just the same. I think every woman had an inner innocence that is now like an inner child. The inner child is so hard to find and relate with. I guess if you see the daughter as a symbolic part of her and not actual offspring, you find a different meaning altogher and that is how I see it. I do not think miscarriage has anything to do with it, and although I first thought it was about an abortion, I have concluded that I was still taking 'daughter' and 'loose her' and all that, way too literally. Abortion, I have concluded, is not relative to this song. I just thought I would throw you all some food for thought. I will summerize what I think quickly: The singer is looking back at the discovery of her sexuality, whether it was through masturbation or her first gratifying sexual experiance. While she loved what she "found" and could not deny herself the pleasure, she had an inner shame about it, so she tried to essentially hide her sensual maturing side from her innocent simpler side. But she could not do it forever, and eventually she lost the innocence. Most people dont think of it too deeply, or they just have sexual liberation/sexual shame conflicts within and the conflict is not something they analyze... They deal or they don't deal, and don't realize it either way...But I think some do, but every girl/woman will all do it differently. When we totally loose our innocence, we may feel liberated, but still, the complicated days of innocence are somthing we still desire at times. In the transition life can be downright painful. When she says: 'Little fish, big fish' , she is creating a metaphor, the fish are her innocence and inner child(little fish), and the big fish, who in most cases will swallow the little fish, is the new, sexual, more empowered, her... The big fish may have swallowed the little fish, either way the big fish has taken the little fish, and sometimes she misses the little fish. At some time during her transition into a sexual creature, she may try to find it, but cannot. "Come back here man give me my daughter": A plea to go back to her simpler times, before conflict and shame. She to be almost literally asking the man who took it(which I have no reason to believe she did not willingly participate, though we do go through a time when we blame the men who we have our first sexual encounters with, so that may tie in in that way)'it', for good; to give 'it' back as a desperate attempt to get back what she could not give back to herself... 'just like my daughter to see her again' : I think that is her way of showing her innocence was succumbing to her new, sensually aware self, and she tried to keep the innocence inside alive, with all the ignorant bliss it can bring, but her innocent side was not a permanent thing, and was bound to be lost in the new her... "I lost my heart under the bridge to that little girl, so much to me" I do not think 'that little girl is her daughter, or innocence, but rather the other side of her conscience... Like the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other, the little girl is the temptress, the devil on the shoulder... She lost her heart to that little girl, and though she tries to keep her daughter from seeing her, and hide what she has discovered "she'll never know just what I found"... But little girl(her tempted side, her sexual side)obviously will not leave the daugher alone, and the daughter (her innocence)continues to see her( the little girl, the temptress and maturity)again... The transition from being your fathers daughter to your boy(or girl) freinds lover, the transition from girl to woman, the transition from innocent to not innocent.... it is an emotionally tyring time so intense many girls are depressed, angry, scared, rebellious, and conflicted... Sleep overs with friends or sleeping WITH friends... Playing dolls or getting dolled up... Being a good girl or being a young, curious woman... The pain and excitement are very stormy, especially if the seeds of religion have been planted in your psyche, you may find yourself pleading "Oh help me jesus, come through the storm." If adolescence is not a storm and not a time we are conflicted about our spiritual side as well as our sexual side, then what is it exactly, other than in it;s literal sense? "I had to loose her to do her harm"... Well, the only way to harm the other side, to would be to loose it, vice versa... You cannot continue to grow as a woman, emotionally or sexually, if you hold on to your childhood and innocence. You may try to, and think you can just adjust that side... But that just makes yo naive. Naivity is ignorant and unhealthy, even if it is blissful for a while. So you would try to subdue that side, and realize you can't, it doesnt work that way, and that you cant ever return to being that innocent child, the 'pure daughter', now that you have seen, or "found" your "mother"(mother as in the woman you have become, a sexual and creative being of maturity), and since you can not subdue the little girl, or change her, you would have to loose her... And hence a woman is born... Though many a woman will still look back and wish they could be that little, innocent daughter again... And in dreams they often are. I think we look at our selves as women(big fish) and try to find the peace we once had as a small fish(innocent daughter)and try to find her even if it is just for a moment, so that we can remember the things we knew, that we didnt even know we knew, before so many other things in life(sex, relationships, etc)overcame us... The blue eyed whore was the way she was viewing herself. She was a blued girl, now she is a blue eyed girl. Holler and moan are likely the sound of her innocent daughter dying. Or, they are the sound of the little girl, taunting her with the sexual pleasures... I think it depends if you are looking at the first part of the song, or the latter reference. |
