| Death Cab for Cutie – Long Division Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
---- "He was always distracted By the very mention of an open door Because he had sworn not to be what he'd been before To be a remain, remain, remain, remainder To be a remain, remain, remain, remainder" ---- He was the type of person who would jump to any new opportunity in relationships/"love" interests. This very mention of an open door is any other opportunity of another woman to fill the hole of companionship without him being the one being "dumped" so to speak. If anyone was going to end it, he would do it first. Because: He had SWORN not to be what he had been before. He had SWORN that he would not be the *remainder*, or the one being "dumped/left" so he keeps this promise to himself by getting out of the relationship first and moving on before the girl can so he doesn't feel the pain that he may have felt with a previous ex who dumped him. His constant distractions by the very mention of open doors are new relationships he can jump to so he ends the current relationship before the girl does. ---- "And they carried on like long division Because it was clear with every page Oh, that they were further away From a solution that would play Without a remain, remain, remain, remainder" ---- What this part is saying is after the events that just occurred, they (his current relationship) "carried on" like long division. So as you all know, since you have the ability to type, that long division is a process of carrying numbers over until you can have no remainder. But this is just not possible with some division problems. Sometimes you will ALWAYS have a remainder. It was clear more and more as they continued to keep whatever they had going that they were only further away (not closer) from any sort of solution that would PLAY (play=work) without one of them being a remainder. But he had SWORN not to be what he had been before (a remainder) so the song sort of hints at the end saying he was going to be the one to end it first. |

If you guys like this song (especially this guys voice) you will REALLY like the band Bloc Party. Check em out, they have some great stuff and their vocals are like this. This song is in the movie "Grandma's Boy," about a 35-year old guy who is a video game tester and gets evicted from his house because his roomate spends all of their rent money on hookers. He moves in with his Grandma, meets a hot chick who works at his building. There is much more to the movie, but it's hilarious, give it a try! |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Blacking Out the Friction Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I want to say this, I think it's about a relationship going bad and OR about 1 person in the relationship who wants to get out of the area and move onto new things, but he/she is still attached to their partner. When he says he does not 'mind the weather,' he could mean, he doesn't mind the situation they are in (obviously referring to cold weather which not many people like.) Then continuing with warm clothing to nullify the coldness. He thinks that is it is "brainless," to assume that she will find someone else OR moving to a new state/city/town/country, etc. That it will do no good for them. He does not mind if they are blacking out the friction maybe meaning they are trying to cover their problems, or just ignore them. The hardest part may be them breaking up. When you will cross the country alone meaning, letting her/him go off without them, or a metaphor for living without that person. |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Gridlock Caravans Lyrics | 19 years ago |

The last comment was right. Gridlock Caravans: Gridlock is a traffic jam, Caravans is referring to the line of cars that are in the traffic jam. This is the song title so the clue is already giving away the point. "starched white shirts so neatly pressed by domestic muses feed delusions that everything is working out right." -- Business/Dress shirts for your job that you would wear, which are ironed or steam-pressed by your wives (which are the domestic muses), create an ILLUSION (delusion) that everything is working out right (because that is an ideal of having a good life, but maybe life isn't going so great.) "but your ribs can't withstand the increasing weight as your heart gets heavier and sooner or later it falls to the tips of your toes." -- I am not fully sure of the meaning, but I decipher he is explaining that it gets harder everyday and his heart is feeling pressured or pushed lower and lower because of the situation he is in with his wife or person he may be living with. He knows things are going wrong but he's trying to keep "up the weight of his heart with his ribs." Falling to the tip of your toes is obviously expressing how his love and apprecation for the way his life is now is failing. "and everyday tastes like inhailing when you just lit the wrong end (that plastic burning scent)" -- This is obviously lighting the wrong end of a cigarette. The taste is referring to the obvious unsatisfying ends of his day (or the 'bad taste) that he usually has. "your only friends are on the exit ramps of gridlock caravans." -- This is obviously saying he pretty much works, goes home to his girlfiend/wife he may be living with, and really doesn't have social interaction with his friends to talk about his horrible relationship he's in. The exit ramps is ofcourse explaining he is gridlocked on a highway. "you try to ask how they've been. but the metal and glass is too thick." -- I think this refers to the way you might glance at people on the highway as they come side to side with you. He is desperately trying to talk to someone, but a glance can't do that. Obviously he is supressed by the metal and glass of his vehicle. |

MurRul I'm going to go out on a limb and say-- no... This song has much more meaning than perverted analogies like that, however, HollywoodHox16 I think hit it in the forehead for the most part. "I'm feeling green Like teenage lovers between the sheets" Sick? No.-- Nervous or maybe inexperienced with something new like this? Yes. |

I agree with aaron19. This song is the "end of summer" or maybe even the end of a school year or High School / College. I really appreciate this song, I was stubborn and never really listened to it lately, but I really realized how good of a song this is. It's probably one of my favorite songs that is less than 2:00... talk about simplicity yet quality. |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Your Heart Is an Empty Room Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
"And all you see Is where else you could be When you're at home Out on the street Are so many possibilities To not be alone" I believe that he is referring to as "at home" as to being with him or having an opportunity to be with him-- but all she sees when she is "at home" (with him) is other chances with other people. But, when he says "Out on the street, are so many possibilities to not be alone", he is saying when this person is away from him and not with him-- that "out on the streets" it's so easy to not be alone because there are so many people you could be with. I tried to make that not-confusing. I think I just gave you all a headache. |
