It is a melancholic song at first glance. Images such as "rivers run icy and strong", "empty theater is lying cold", "a stranger on the corner" and "souls lost into the ether of death" create a tinge of sadness with a sense of indifference. I also get a feeling that this cold place does not exist as it is where "Dreams come back through the bells" and "wise in the eyes and the arms of new borns". To a certain degree, I think that this is a song about meditation and being somewhere else spiritually in where you begin to see the world with a new perspective and a hopeful mind at the same time. "Hearts can't help but sing Can't help but ring" To me these two lines are about what happens to one's state of mind when he or she spiritually enters into a zone which doesn't exist on earth. "T |

| I decided to write a comment for every Laura Veirs song because she's such an amazing artist as a singer and a songwriter. I think this song is basically about "I" in the song which I take as a girl writing a letter to her mother after having left her for some time. Now as she's leaving, she wonders why she has left her mother the first place. "And scabby knees wondering why i left you mama". | |
