| Jawbreaker – Oyster Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| If you're going to take this literally and the oyster is a vagina, then what's the shell? | |
| Against Me! – Turn Those Clapping Hands into Angry Balled Fists Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Umm...I'm not seeing that 'exploiting cheap labor' labor thing. I agree more with TheDraft, it's most likely about the emotional frustration of day-to-day living. | |
| tuesday – So Awake Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| So on my CD, the song "Too Much of Today" is the song with these lyrics, and "So Awake" is instrumental, even though this title makes more sense. It's weird. | |
| Alkaline Trio – Rooftops (Hot Water Music cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Wow. These lyrics are super wrong. I got the scars to remind me. I've watched the clocks go round. I walked myself through some days that put me where I am in another time, in another place, all things might have fit in place but for now I'm finding myself right here standing on a rooftop screaming Hey world are you listening, listening to me? I'm here and im hurting to begin again. It's another time it's another place, we are making more old days, but for now, I'm finding myself right here standing on my doorstep screaming. Hey world are you listening, listen to me? I'm here and im hurting to begin again. Hey world, I'm ready to listen Learn something new I'm here and I'm willing to get ourselves through I mean, come on, "lopping might i fit in place"...what does that even mean? "We are making more obeys"...what? this song's too good to fuck up it is george smokes weed by the way |

| Alkaline Trio – Good Fucking Bye Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I definitely think this song is about kicking a drinking problem of some kind, using the imagery and language of breaking up with someone. I think that's part of Matt's lyrical style. The symptoms he describes are largely due to kicking an alcohol problem. Really beautiful song. |

| The Lawrence Arms – Chicago Is Burning ... Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Okay, I know the last post here was literally two years ago, but I gotta put this out there. The beginning of this song sounds ridiculously like 106 South. I mean the bass is different, but only slightly. I feel like I'm missing something, since the Lawrence Arms are fucking great, and I can't believe the similarities in the songs didn't occur to them. It's just confusing. | |
| Alkaline Trio – If You Had A Bad Time Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
This song is a perfect example of why I love Dan. I think he's always sort of putting himself out there and writing songs that are more soul-baring. I know quite a few people who could pass this song off as cheesy, but I don't know, I think Dan is very sincerely offering advice to anyone who will listen. As for the whole depression thing, I don't think it was meant to be specifically addressed to someone with depression. I think Dan's probably suffered with it back and forth throughout his life. You can sort of tell just by listening to his songs. And again, I think it's cool that he puts it out there. This one reminds me of "I'm Dying Tomorrow," except directed toward someone else. I always enjoy the heartfelt honesty with which Dan writes most of his songs. |

| Alkaline Trio – Trouble Breathing Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I don't know, I don' think this is an anti-suicide song. The only song Alkaline Trio ever made which could be described as 'anti-suicide' is "I'm Dying Tomorrow." I think these guys 'get' suicide, they probably understand suicidal thoughts, and are pretty dark and have probably had them before. Just listen to "Maybe I'll Catch Fire." But I don't think anyone in this song is seriously going to kill themselves, and I think they both know that. It's just that process of venting "I want to die," or being the person who comforts someone else. It's a great dialogue, and great lyrics, as usual. | |
| Alkaline Trio – I'm Dying Tomorrow Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I literally can't stop listening to this song. I enjoy to listen to it right next to "Maybe I'll Catch Fire." I don't know why since they're sort of the antithesis of each other. I connect with Dan's songs a lot. anyway... | |
| Fugazi – Song #1 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I agree with Omnicide. It reminds me of why Fugazi is so great. It's punk that transcends any scene or genre or any border you can throw at it. Most bands and in fact most people can't do the same. |

| Against Me! – Baby, I'm an Anarchist! Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think this is the Against Me! twist on a break up song. I definitely think there's a humor about it though. | |
| Ben Folds Five – Hospital Song Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I like how this song goes right into "Army" which is the most fun song on the album. I don't know if he was making some kind of point with the contradiction of super sad/super goofy, but it's kind of annoying. So actually, I don't like it. Both are great songs though. | |
| Dead Kennedys – Terminal Preppie Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| What really gets me about this song is that it's over 20 years later and literally every single thing Jello mentions in this song is STILL true. I've been to frat houses where the cans are stacked on the walls, kids still wear those damn shirts that say "College" like Belushi wore in Animal House. After all this time you'd think something would change. | |
| Operation Ivy – Martha is a Punk Rocker Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Yeah I think they were being sarcastic too. Especially given that Operation Ivy (or at least Jesse's lyrical content) doesn't really fit in with a lot of the punk rock stereotypes, preaching unity and peace and anti-violence and whatnot. | |
| Operation Ivy – Knowledge Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Pretty much everyone in the world can relate to this song. I definitely have no fucking clue what I'm doing with my life, and admitting that I know nothing about my future, other people, life in general, was probably one of the biggest releases of my life. And that is why I love this song. I haaaaaate the Green Day version though. I have nothing against Green Day, it's just that this song is fast, loud and passionate. And they turned it into a lounge song. It's seriously the worst cover of all time. Wasn't Billie Joe friends with these dudes? Friends don't let friends make shitty covers of their songs. |

| Dead Kennedys – I Kill Children Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| So...I dropped out of college a year ago, became a babysitter. Earned ten bucks and hour babysitting all day for one girl. Not bad, but I became aggravated and annoyed all the time, because getting treated like shit by an eight year old that can't read makes you a bit wacko. So I started listening to punk rock, heard this song and laughed like hell. Then I realized I seriously did want to bash this kid's head in a door. So I quit and went back to school. So in a weird way, I guess I can thank the Dead Kennedys for getting me back to the straight and narrow. | |
| Elvis Costello – Alison Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I basically thought the song was about a girl who was really miserable and her ex-boyfriend just wanted to be there for her..."My aim is true." But then my dad said, "Or at least HE thinks she's miserable." And that got me thinking, maybe it's a girl who's just moved on from him and that makes him sad. I'm not sure if that's right, but I thought it was interesting. | |
| The Wallflowers – Bleeders Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think it's about being a melancholy kind of person. And feeling heartache and sadness like everyone else, but saying it and writing about it in a sentimental way and then having people tell you that you're putting on act, like they should be impressed or you should be ashamed, because everyone bleeds, so why are you talking about it? Jakob is saying, well yeah sometimes I feel "overdressed" but I'm gonna sing about being sad and I'm not being "vain." He's just being himself and he won't feel ashamed. It's kind of like an "it's okay to be a little emo" song. Even though emo is a juvenile term here. Oh well. | |
| The Dresden Dolls – The Perfect Fit Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Everyone focuses on that one sexual line, which is a good one, but one of many in this song...and the title. But whatever. To me the meaning of the song is in the lines "I can't trap a mouse, but I can pet a cat, no I'm really serious, I'm really very good at that." Even a cat can trap a mouse, and has that kind of purpose and direction, but she feels that she doesn't. She's "good for nothing." She doesn't really want to be good at anything either, she doesn't really care, she just wants to pet a cat, be loved for who she is, play Life, etc. It's kind of about just living your life and doing whatever, even if it is purposeless. But you still kind of feel that regret of wasted potential, so it's not a happy song, which is what's so great. I relate to it a lot cause it's written at that time when you're just leaving all the direction of your teens, etc. and moving into a world where it's all up to you. That's what I get out of it anyway. |

| Rancid – Black And Blue Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
This song always pops into my head whenever I wind up at some self-important, stupid party on a lost Friday night. "Sedation throughout the nation...intoxication of a generation." Nobody really gives a shit about anything and so they go out and get blasted and waste their time looking pretty and drinking. I always feel glad that I never fell into that world and still use my brain...but that's just what the song means to me. Also, who sings this? Freeman? |
|
| The Damned – Love Song Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I love the chorus. None of that melodramatic rubbish you normally hear in love songs. It's the anti-love song love song. | |
| The Damned – Noise Noise Noise Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Seriously. This song is awesome. Whenever someone asks me what I think punk is about I oftens just say "Noise Noise Noise." In mostly just about doing whatever you want and saying "fuck you" to everyone, particularly people like the vicar (love that verse). And the whole chorus, noise is for heroes, come on, that has to be the theory behind punk music right there. | |
| ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – The Best Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This about something my friend and I often refer to as "the domesticated life." It's basically about growing up and having a "fine life" with a "fine wife" drinking "fine wine," but everything being hollow and meaningless, but according to that "fine lie...things couldn't be better." You basically lose all the passion of your youth and mime a life that you're supposed to have. Or at least that's what I think. | |
| ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – Worlds Apart Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song reminds me of an old fashioned Clash song - where Strummer would rail on everything from the music scene to politics to society all in one caustic and perfectly executed song. I always think of this song as a relic of old-style punk music. Anyway, it's great. | |
| ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – Baudelaire Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I think this song is about how both the boring ones and the wild ones are both guilty. Those that accuse the passionate of sins are guilty themselves of the sin of removing themselves from the world. This kind of idea was expressed by Baudelaire in the preface to "The Flowers of Evil," so that could be what the title is about. And, afastingartist, you are exactly what's wrong with any kind of open-discussion music forum like this. Just because you think your opinion is most perfect and most correct doesn't make it true. Your imagined superiority doesn't give you the right to yell at anyone or accuse anyone. So why don't you shut up or figure out how to say anything without being a total tool. |
|
| The Shins – Girl On The Wing Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I always thought this song was about this guy, who has this friend-type girl who was "on the wing." They've liked each other/been together back and forth, never able to shake one another, and never able to really have a relationship. It's all the back and forth between two people who really care about each other, but are never connected, and he'll always have a special place for her. But I guess that's the spin it takes in my life. | |
