just throwing this out there, but do you think it could be about his father? You always here that boys grow up to be just like their dads, and Kurt didn't want to go that path. His dad was a sawmill operator and Kurt wanted to do something with his life. "Thanks to unencouraging parents everywhere, for giving their children the will to show them up." He had a lousy childhood, but then when he goes out and follows his dream he finds it isn't what he expected. Touring in a van and not having enough money for food, he realizes that his childhood wasn't as bad as he thought. He just wanted to get away and not end up like his father. |

I don't know if this has any relevance to the song, but I read in a book that Kurt's uncle Ernest died of an an anyuerism at age 57. It may not have anything to do with the song, but it could be where he got the title. |

Nirvana covered this song. I had no idea it was a cover. Nirvana also covered Where Did you Sleep Last Night, which made me want to look up Leadbelly songs. SO it surprised me to see that this song was also a Leadbelly song and think it's cool that a more modern artist would apreciate an older muician such as Leadbelly and keep the music going. Really cool. |

i've seen a lot of things people take this song to mean. i don't think any one person is wrong. To me it was just today that I remembered this song. There was a girl that I liked and all I really wanted to do was be friends with her. But I eventually just concluded she's trying to avoid me. I may be wrong, but it just pisses me off that you can be nothing but nice to a person and they still reject you. Never have dirty thoughts. Never do anything to hurt them, and yet you'll still never be good enough. You just have to learn to take the pain and get over it. It's an awesome song. |

I always thought it was about society, because I've never heard the older version, although it being about God makes a lot of sense. I always thought it was about how everyone wanted you to conform and that society doesn't really accept individuals, and that it's constantly trying to cleanse you 'in a laundry room'. Like if you've ever been someone with your friends and your just being yourself and one of your friends tells you to stop what you're doing because you're not cool or something. Then the conclusion comes to you. Noone really cares who you are as are person. You're only around to be used or 'kept in a jar'. |

bohda, I don't know what lyrics you're referring too, but I have heard multiple versions of Smells Like Teen Spirit, all with different lyrics. Kurt always changed lyrics to songs. Beside that, a lot of his lyrics are unintelligable, so give people a break for not getting them right. and to anarexorcist, I read somewhere that Kurt named his kid Francis Bean Cobain, because when she was born she looked like a bean. So... think what you will. |

I read in the greatest hits booklet that it had something to do with retalation against the press giving KoRn a bad wrap. To me it was always a feeling of fighting pressure. Like whenever my girlfriend was mad at me I'd listen to this song. It's like someone's trying to guilt you and make you feel bad about yourself and replying 'fuck you. you make me feel like shit, and I'm tired of it' That's what it always meant to me. "I'm done, I'm not a whore' |

Really it could be all the things you guys have said. Kurt may have not meant only one thing by the song. "My favorite inside source. I'll kiss your open sores. Appreciate your concern. You'll always stink and burn." This line is obvious to me, and grahpicly describes rape except for that inside source line which two people just posted about above. Kurt wrote whatever he wanted so the meaning doesn't always follow throught the whole song. Someone on the front page said something about if he were still around he'd be amking amazing music. I don't agree. I think he would have quit the music industry because he couldn't take the stress of it. The press and everything. "It's better to burn out than to fade away," he said. I don't think he'd want to carry his career that long. |

Wow. I've heard this on the radio before and liked it but never payed attention to the lyrics. I just liked the bass line. But this time when I heard it I listened and am like whoa, is this about Kurt Kobain? So I connceted to the internet to see what I could find out, and now I know that it's not about Kobain, but R. Budd Dwyer. Thanks for clearing that up for me. |
