| The Cure – This Is a Lie Lyrics

This song, though much more beautiful I think, reminds me of the other Cure song 'Spilt Milk' where it's about all the possibilities we lose when we make a single choice. Spilt Milk is more general though and this one is about love, I think. This song does terrible things to anybody having doubts about their relationship. |

I've narrowed down this as the biggest philosophical issue in life; the problem of "what if?" How can we all go through life not constantly concerned with everything that will never be because of the choices we make. You're born into this world of infinite possibility and as you grow older, the possibilities become more and more limited. The inevitable tragedy of life. |

So many people consider the Dandys to be pretentious and inauthentic but this song feels so pure and honest. This song puts me at peace, the things we'd like to promise our loves. |

I don't know if any of you have heard the acoustic version of this song but he adds after "It's a great escape," the line "and everyday we need it." Anybody can empathize with struggling to get through the day or life. Bright Eye's 'Laura Laurent' has a lyric that refers to this, "But you should never be embarrassed by your trouble with living, because it's the ones with the sorest throats who have done the most singing." It kind of refers to Shannon (not directly) as his struggles in life which led him to heroin are probably the same struggles that allowed him to produce such great music, especially this song. "I just want someone to say, I'll always be there when you wake." |

It's "instills" because his longing is what causes him to have dreams, such as "On silver stars I wish, and wish, and wish." With no longing would be no dreams or wishes. |

I first heard this song right after reading Faust, and I always picture when listening to it a demon in the corner or on your shoulder tempting you into doing something in the moment and not worrying about the future, kind of like Faust selling his soul to get what he wants at the moment rather than waiting to go to heaven. "There is only now." Such a dangerous thought. |

| Ben Harper – When She Believes Lyrics

"Now, all of life
Is just passing the time
Until once again
Your eyes look into mine"
How often have we felt this for our lost loves,
when meaning is taken from us in her absence.
Captured so perfectly,
the song reveals regret in its tone.
He is missing the one who believes in him. |

The Freudian psychology that Conor dips into with his line "I hope that womb's not too warm," creates a deep resonance for me. To me, he's speaking of the idea of how strange this whole life thing can be. It's the moment where you can just look at your body and wonder why you are the form you are, or wonder why we have to breathe or eat or drink to live, and just a complete alienation from what it is to be human. It's not something that has to be accepted though arguably it's pointless to fight against it, but that lacking of a feeling of belonging in this life coupled with the Freudian notion that we all wish to be in the womb where everything is provided for us and we have no concerns is something that resonates absolutely. |

The part that strikes me most from the song is the section ending with "but will you still want me?" I belive Conor is touching on many issues in this song but this feeling of being able to reveal your darkest secrets to someone, to really share yourself with them, and the fear that they may not want you still...it's something that I empathize with deeply. Perhaps it is just the deepest form of insecurity. It's the concept of home. Someplace you are always welcome. This is what we want so badly in another, but fear we will never have. |

it's about the change in his voice near the end of the song as he sings "Don't you weep..." You gotta believe the song has a deep personal meaning. And I don't think there's anything depressing in the acceptance of death. |
