Rilo Kiley – A Man/Me/Then Jim Lyrics 16 years ago
ok.. here is what i think...

there are more characters in the song than people are thinking ... i believe the three sections are in reverse order..

verse one tells of a Man and his X attending the funeral of a friend named Jim... in this verse Jim mentions the 'living is the problem' line and the Woman/X brings up the 'slow fade of love' line.

both of these lines i believe are common place in this group of friends past..

In verse two, its from a different persons perspective, lets just call it Jenny's perspective for awesome's sake lol...
Jenny speaks on the phone to Jims wife... i dont believe Jenny knows who Jim is or has any connection to Jim.
the Wife on the phone seems like she suffers depression or some kind of problem that she believes annoys Jim.. she tells Jim the 'living is the problem' line which Jim later refers to in his suicide note. Jim tells the Wife the 'slow fade of love' line. Meaning that its not the living with the Wife that's the problem, its that he doesnt love her like he used to.
Jim has learnt the 'slow fade of love' line earlier in his life from his old girlfriend Diana who appears in the third section...

at this time, we think its Jim's intention to Divorce the Wife and take the kid but this isnt the case....

verse three: Jims perspective in his final days.. Jim is driving around stressed out about deciding to leave his wife or not and maybe cant think of how to tell her what he is feeling when he "happens upon his old lover's old house" i.e. Diana's house... and he remembers the conversation that he had with Diana telling her that Dying is all he can do after a love so strong that has ended.. Diana explains to him the 'slow fade of love' line that Jim will come to relate to with his Wife.
Jim decides that he is going to leave his Wife, not take the Daughter but instead, Take his own life...
Jim doesn't want to live within the slow fade of love for the rest of his life and thinks that death is the only way out...

perhaps the Woman in the first verse is a friend of Diana's, hence why they both use the 'slow fade of love' line though i dont believe they are the same person..

Bright Eyes – The Biggest Lie (Elliott Smith cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
i posted this in the elliot smith section.. thought i may as well add it here too... i love both these guys...

i believe this song to be about suicide but less metaphorical than other people have mentioned ....

i think the character of the song jumps in front of the train... and here's why

waiting for a train... it only goes one way,
he is waiting for the train to come so he can jump, there is no coming back from death

the pull us apart line i think has more to do with ending of a relationship (not nessecaraly with a lover, possibly his mother or whoever the other person in this song is).. i dont think its meant literally pull us apart, although a train would do that :S

and make everybody late...
if you have ever been waiting for a train that someone has jumped in front of you can expect massive delays .... unfortunately this happened to me the other day, i think the person lived though... there was a 4hr delay..

You spent everything you had
Wanted everything to stop that bad
i dont think the spend he is talking about is nessecaraly money, but time, love, care, knowledge, patience... now he feels like he is in debt and like it only makes him feel worse

the debt aspect brings me to the next line about a credit card... credit cards are all about debt and owing, borrowing what you dont have... the crushed credit card would be because of the train running him over....

resisted to Smith
meaning the debt is his responsibility and his fault. he is Smith but he doesnt want to own this debt

not the name that you call me with
his birth name wasnt elliot, this could be the reason why someone from his childhood maybe his mother, might refer to him as steven but seeing as though the only name mentioned in the song is Smith.. im thinking it could more likely be a lover that might call him baby or darling rather than Smith....

You turned white like a saint
..when the person found out what he had done

im tired of dancing on this pot of gold flake paint
He is sick of pretending everything is ok when its not, its not even believable to anyone hence the flake paint

Oh, we're so very precious, you and I
this line throws me a little, i think this may be the bond the two people shared is important (precious) and now that the bond is broken with his death, the other person may suffer and not handle life..

And everything that you do makes me want to die
i think this line is the lie that he speaks of.. i think he said this and didnt mean it, he blamed his sadness on the other person and he didnt mean it and this may have caused the other person to feel guilty and kill themselves...

the final lines about telling the biggest lie are saying that he was lying and it has caused something horrific...

ok well im making headway on this already... the statement of the sun not burning forever is quite exact.. if he had have said the sun will burn for about another million years.. thats vague...

a day's gonna come, when there wont be a moon and there wont be a sun... ...exact

still cant get how the "proof" actually proves anything though...

can anyone explain this bit of the song please..

They say the sun won't burn forever
That's a science too exact
I can prove it, watch, we're crossing the state line
See those headlights coming towards us?
That's someone going back
To a town they said they'd never
___________________________________

i just dont get how the sun not burning forever is at all exact, in fact that statement seems quite vague

the other bit i dont get is how this statement, or science relates to the following line.. or how it could prove anything...

i love conors words and i usually understand everything he speaks of, even if i can work it out to make sense to me... this though is slightly confusing.. i havent had a "good" think about it though.. if i come back with anything b4 anyone else replies (which happens quite often) ill post what i come up with... cheers adam <3

track number one on simple love!! cant believe no one has commented on it.. its a really good song.. gives a lot of locations which sent me googling... not really sure on the people in the song if he aims it at a few different people...

the verses

There was a fight, I heard your lover fair dissolved,
problem solved with a broken fist,
bloody nose and a busted lip.

You broke your hand,
you hit the wall when he ducked your punch,
heard he's waiting at your cabin with the gun.

if it's a girl thats swinging punches thats a bit scary lol
tough chick!

awesome song <3

David Dondero – Rothko Chapel Lyrics 17 years ago
this song is rad... if you not seen the actual rothko chapel then you should google it.. its architecturally amazing, i can only imagine that being there would blow your mind...
with a lack of all the decadence that is usually present in churches you would be able to think, reflect and ponder... you would be able to rest your mind....

just thought it would be good to add that in the charlie parker quote, the horn he is referring to is his instrument, saxophone but it could be deeper... your horn could be your mouth or your person...

sweet lover, you know the deal
i can predict the things that you feel
i need a breather, i need a towel,
i need a lover, i need it now

i can relate to that line too well... when you get that intimate with someone that you share thoughts and stuff... you become codependent and it starts getting too much.. you start being able to predict not only the good but the bad.. then you can easily hurt the other person.. it sucks...
