| Neil Young – Are You Ready for The Country? Lyrics

A guy just got drafted (VietNam). The "country" (government) is saying, "Are you ready, 'cause it's time to go." Guy is desperately looking for answers - talks to the Preacher (who says his thing about God); talks to the Hangman (who gives his line). Anti-war song. |

| Bruce Springsteen – Dancing In The Dark Lyrics

Dancin' In The Dark is one of those pieces of music that you hear and say, "Wow...I know THAT feeling!" Because I think everyone, at some time or another, feels just what this song is about. You want something so badly...something exciting...you wanna BE somebody doing something inspiring and immense, but all you're feeling is just burned out and tired of yourself...you almost wish you were someone else for a night, someone who is who you really want to be.
That it's set in a city makes the song all the more intense. |

| Neil Young – Words (Between The Lines Of Age) Lyrics

Sounds like Neil wrote a philosophical song about himself on his own birthday. He's sitting in his kitchen inside his house watching workers through the window (they're down by the pond, looking for something to plant in the lawn). He sees guests coming up the road, bringing presents and then greeting him. He's wondering what they would think, how they would behave toward him, if he were someone different than who he is...someone who doesn't "live in castles, a bit at a time". The "king laughing and talking in rhymes" is himself; the words are his words, during his years on earth. On his birthday, he's feeling a little bitter...a little sad...a bit regretful...probably glad he's who he is - yet wondering who would he be, were he someone else. |

| Neil Young – Old Man Lyrics

Songs like this one put the "classic" in "classic rock".
Old Man is about the man who was the caretaker on Neil's ranch when he bought it way back when. Can't recall the old man's name, but I think his wife's name was Clara. Anyway, Neil tells the story in his film "Heart Of Gold". |

| U2 – Running To Stand Still Lyrics

These sensitively written lyrics are about the observance of a junkie; also, about her environment, which creates a social commentary as secondary to the primary subject of heroin addiciton. "You gotta cry without weeping, talk without speaking, scream without raising your voice" - this is what addiction is...it's crying without weeping, talking without speaking, and screaming without raising your voice. Being a junkie is such a quiet thing. And addiction, especially to heroin, which is a repetitive, consistent addiction, is "running to stand still". |
