Sorry bro - it's just I am hugely passionate about Shannon and the music he left us. He is so missed...I didn't even know the man and it feels like a hole. |

Oh my fucking God! It's evident that most of you don't know ANYTHING about Shannon Hoon and Blind Melon. First of all, JordyWordy - the bee girl is NOT Shannon Hoon's daughter. His only daughter is named Nico and she was three motnhs old when he died.
Secondly, Marigold16, his real name was Richard Shannon Hoon...he just went by Shannon instead. The man may have let fame catch up to him, but he was brilliant and unique to say the least. |

| Blind Melon – The Duke Lyrics

This is an excellent and very underrated Melon song. It's also one of their trippiest and most relaxed. I feel as though I'm right there on the beach watching the tide when I hear 'The Duke', and I always have a picture of a serene, exotic setting in the evening as the sun goes down. Of course, the song is about a huge statue of the Hawaiian King of Surfing, located on a beach there. I think that it also has an inner hinting of being lonely. Not sure Shannon liked playing this live so much, as on the recent 'Live at The Metro' DVD he seemed a bit caught of guard when Roger starts into it. |

| Blind Melon – Vernie Lyrics

Vernie is a fabulously delirious song. The way it shifts from a warbling, kind of blurred atmosphere, mixed with Shannon's unique way of describing his view of things, to the shift into memory lane of roaming through Vernie's cupboard jars, and peanuts in a pile, with Elvis down the aisle singing gallantly, is amazing, and it's quite evident that Shannon always kept good memories of his grandmother, with the little things bringing her to mind. The song is one, that if people didn't know that Shannon was singing about his grandmother, would maybe confuse some, but thats part of the beauty of Vernie. It's disorienting...I have seen and heard a couple live performances of the song, and sometimes prior to it, Shannon would say, "This song's about a little old lady who always told me to keep it simple, stupid". |

| Blind Melon – Sleepyhouse Lyrics

I love this song as well. Usually one of the first I play when spinning the self-titled Melon classic. It sets me right into a mellow groove at the beginning, kind of in a similar way that The Beatles 'Within You Without You' does. 'Sleepyhouse' has an aura of innocence at a time when the band was still learning from experimenting. The journey and feelings of the band creating the first album is layed out for us with this song in some ways. And yeah, mikejohnston1989, what was with Shannon's fascination with tinfoil?! Immediately, Shannon sitting there being interviewed on 'Letters From a Porcupine' with tinfoil covering his entire head comes to mind. Pretty bizarre sight...but hey...that was Shannon. |
