Actually, when he said he was embarrassed about it he was referring to his vocal performance, rather than the song itself. He said something close to, "Vocally, it's a piece of... shit." He didn't think he was the right singer for it but apparently it's a piece that he felt was very close to him regardless of that. Personally, I think it's an amazing piece. I am an admirer of both Brian Wilson & Van Dyke Parks. |

I love how he sings "It's my time to shine, like a tuna in the brine." These once living things shine the most when they're dead. I love that. |

Okay - quick note to the last post. I think the bridge could also possibly be: "And we grow from a garden Where all that we know Is you're just a fool for him" What do you think? |

I have found some minor differences to the lyrics than the one last posted here in full after listening to the song thousands of times and watching the performance from the Faraway Stables dvd (though he changes "to my own asylum" to "and my own aslum's". Listen to the song while reading along to these lyrics and I think you'll agree that they are pretty close to being completely accurate. This is simply what I believe he sings and I think it's a n absolutely beautiful song. Anyway, here they are: ASYLUM by Daniel Johns. Contained in my cotton crib Where I feel no turbulence The ocean sleeps upon a shelf And it feeds my apathy But I can feel it in the night Like rain upon my skin inside a winter Would you begin to splinter If I decide to recognise my thorns? ‘Cause every time I see your face in a cloud I feel no violence So tilt the water ‘til it turns me around To my own asylum Dry in the day And fading away in the night I feel the sun before it’s light And it fades away into the night I was afraid; I feared myself I cleared the shelf, and killed the shame But I can feel it in the night Collect the rocks and throw them over borders To shake the muddy waters And clear myself from hiding every thorn ‘Cause every time I see your face in a cloud I feel no violence So tilt the water ‘til it turns me around To my own asylum Dry in the day And fading away... And we grow from a garden We’re all that we know (‘Cause) You’re just a fool for him ‘Cause every time I see your face in a cloud I feel no violence So tilt the water ‘til it turns me around To my own asylum Dry in the day And fading away in the night... |
