Lila Downs – La Llorona Lyrics 20 years ago
They all call me the black one, Weeping Woman,
The black one but the loving one,
They all call me the black one, Weeping Woman,
The Black One but the loving one,
I am like the green chili plant, Weeping Woman
Spicy but delicious,
I am like the green chili plant, Weeping Woman,
Spicy but delicious,

You were coming out of the temple one day, Weeping Woman,
When by passing by you caught my attention,
You were coming out of the temple one day, Weeping Woman,
When by passing by you caught my attention,

Beautiful you were,
The Virgin I thought I saw,
You say I have no pain, because you never see me cry,
There are the dead who do not cry,
and their sorrow is much greater than mine,

There by me, Weeping Woman, Weeping Woman, Weeping Woman, Take ME to the river,
Cover me in you (bosom?) because I am dying of coldness

Because I love you, you want for me to love you more,
I have already given you my life, Weeping Woman,
What else do you want?

These translated lyrics are roughly done and through the compilation on the two songs on the soundtrack...the song makes an allusion to La Llorrona (Weeping Woman) from the Mexican folk tales...as mentioned by the person who commented prior to me. However, I disagree with the analysis that the song is directly speaking of the Weeping Woman. The singer is telling of a woman who has him trapped because he can no longer love her anymore and he has to be with her because of her constant crying. He tells her, just as the woman who drowned her children because of the lament that she was suffering from her husband leaving her, to take him down to the river and drown him, thus ending his suffering... It's a very morbid song, very it's also extremely poetic...making it absolutely beautiful, esp. when you can understand it in its original tongue.

Lila Downs – Alcoba Azul Lyrics 20 years ago
The night will continue without the haste of nostalgia
This tango will be our wound
And this bleeding accordian will represent our souls
This night will be our day, all of our days

Come back to me
Love me without the need of light, in our blue alcove
Where there was never any sun to shine on us

Blind me
Kill my heart in our shared blue alcove,
My love

This song is absolutely perfect. It depicts the heartaches that a woman has gone through because of the one whom she truley loves. She cant bear to be without him, therefore she seeks the solace of a time when the physical attractions did not cloud the two's shared love. She yearns for him to love her in the dark, that way they'll just have each other's thoughts and sensations, rather than simple lust. The tango itself is a very powerful song which works very well in conveying the singers feelings. It is said that for the tango to be danced correctly, there has to be a certain level of chemsitry between those dancing. Be it love or lust...clearly, this song can only be appreciated through those who are experiencing it...

The Postal Service – This Place Is a Prison Lyrics 20 years ago
The lyrics have a very straightforward meaning: the use of cocaine, its addictive ways, the people who use it, and the hopelessness of trying to escape. Immediately the image of people at a party taking lines of cocaine is given, inferred through the common way which cocaine is sold, in "$20's". Coincidentally, it is then inhaled through $20 bills. To really understand this view, you have to have some knowledge of cocaine, its affects, and the overall atmosphere when using it. I am guilty of this. So when I first heard this song it jumped out at me. I instantly identified with the lyrics because it related to a time in my life when escaping the clutches of drug use felt like "I was not permitted to leave". In reality, you never really do...there's always that nagging in the back of your mind for 'one more time'. A prime example of this can be interpreted through another song, Hotel California. In the lines "You can check out any time you want/ But you can never leave". In addition, since cocaine is a stimulant and keeps people awake, the term "after-parties" is most often used, since the drug is done after a party or an outing to a club. For the lyrics to say, "And I know that it's not a party/If it happens every night" is another piece of evidence of the addiction that is involved...everyday use. Also, to associate the drug with a positive such as a "party" is a fallacy that the lyrics tear down- this is something that takes a while for a user to understand. Once again, personal experience comes into play. Overall, the speaker is clearly a user who is in the midst of struggling between what he knows real life is and what he has mistakenly substituted for life- the drug user's scene. He now, sadly, knows that he and the people who use this drug have lost some part of their humanity and there are no longer friendships holding their association together but rather drug use and convenience. Adding to the overall somber feel of the song is just the hopelessness, as mentioned earlier. The reality that this song possesses is something that should be quite admired, especially when those who have struggled with drug use have the chance to hear it. It can either remind one of the wretchedness that is drug use or it can hopefully give others who have not seen the cons a chance to get a different perspective on the dangers that are being so haphazardly inhaled.
