This song was recorded October 1991. As far as i can tell it is about the Gulf War. Points of light refers to George Bush Sr.'s republican nomination acceptance speech where he used the analogy of his idea of america:
This is America: the Knights of Columbus, the Grange, Hadassah, the Disabled American Veterans, the Order of Ahepa, the Business and Professional Women of America, the union hall, the Bible study group, LULAC, "Holy Name" - a brilliant diversity spread like stars, like a thousand points of light in a broad and peaceful sky.
As for the New world order line, it comes from a speech from Mr. Bush before congress, about his post-soviet objectives:
"Out of these troubled times, our fifth objective — a New World Order — can emerge: a new era"

the album was supposed to be completely about a man killing his mother and turning to satan, and except for isolation years, it is.....this is the narrators final descent into hell
and why do christians feel like saying "im christian but..."?
being christian shouldnt hinder your enjoyment of something just because it mioght deal with satan in an abstract way, esp if it casts evil in a negative light. the fact that you have to put that preamble on there shows that christianity serves nothing but to be a barrier to enjoyment of life, more than alot of other religions(at least that i know of, although all the sects of religions that make you vow ascetiscism or such are included too) |

it was his grandmother.....and the album was planned to be a concept album about a man killing his mother but akerfeldt wanted to include isolation years which isnt about the plot at all
so the album is still sorta a concept, more of a motif like Blckwater Park. this is about the murder of his mother |
