i really like the idea of "here we go with the letter/can you fix it for me", i think it might be that idea of asking everyone else to solve our own problems, and a Jim'll Fix It reference? everyone just complaining about things but being complacent when it comes to actually sorting it out. the idea of "we like who we like" is a kind of elitist thing; not accepting other people into the fold because of a group mentality of keeping out anything they don't agree with, but once something's widespread and popular they're "easily swayed". it's definitely something about redtop papers like the Sun and whatever, they do a lot of "campaigns" against and for things and a lot of people will read that everyday, it's a cheap source of entertainment and information that doesn't challenge people in terms of intelligence. this song is definitely not against the working class/"chavs", it's saying that this is the way things are and the government like to introduce things to make themselves look better or more popular like 24 hour drinking but it's a cynicism, like the government may think that stops people from being how they are but they'll still oppose people they fundamentally disagree with because of upbringing and disadvantage, and being told all the time by the redtops that the government is made up of people with "too much" when they themselves have not very much. the kaisers are leeds boys, so they'll have seen this. well, i think so, anyway :) could be wrong! |

| Fall Out Boy – ALPHAdog and OMEGAlomaniac (Demo) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| i don't know why, but I see this song as something about Pete and Patrick. Like, Patrick is alpha as the singer but Pete's the "omegalomaniac" as in megalomania obviously hah, everyone sees him as this guy obsessed with himself and delusion of excessive grandeur and such. But he's the wizard behind the curtains, the guy making all the awesome lyrics that everyone loves but they hate him. I don't know, it's an idea. but i love this song :) | |
| Neutral Milk Hotel – Oh Comely Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I don't think there's one right interpretation, but these are the things that definitely resonate to me: "Oh comely, I will be with you when you lose your breath" The girl is losing her virginity, and he is saying it will be a breathtaking moment. "it isn't as pretty as you'd like to guess/In your memory" She is romanticising the sex, longing on it as her first experience, and he is telling her that because of the powerful emotions involved she has overblown it when it was not in fact as romantic as she'd like to think. "All of your friends are all letting you blow Bristling and ugly Bursting with fruits falling out from the holes" This seems very vulgar to me, personally: she needs someone to confide in and to confirm her actions in some way, but those she loves keep letting her give herself away to meaningless sex because they don't see it as a problem, but she needs someone to say "comforting things in [her] ear" and confirm she is worth more than these experiences. "And hang for your hollow ways Moving your mouth to pull out all your miracles" Again, it seems a vulgar reference. To me, he is saying that these people will act as if they are listening to her but when she stops letting out her feelings they will be staying around for the side of her that lets them use her in the way they see fit. "Your father made fetuses With flesh-licking ladies" Obviously a reference to her father's infidelity, made in a very graphic way. Perhaps the inclination is that she saw her mother being left in favour of these women, she began to reflect that behaviour in order to keep the men around, believing they recieved more attention and love than her mother? "So make all your fat, fleshy fingers to moving And pluck all your silly strings And bend all your notes for me Soft, silly music is meaningful, magical The movements were beautiful" Mangum uses the language here to create opposing images. the idea that her fingers are fat and fleshy is conjoned with the image of the beautiful movements and music during sex, which may be that she is only attractive whilst she is having sex because that is the only side of her they truly want to see. After this, she becomes unappealing. "All in your ovaries All of them milking with green fleshy flowers While powerful pistons were sugary sweet machines Smelling of semen all under the garden" It's all very sexual, but not necessarily beautiful. The lexical field of nature and sex are conflated, saying that the act of sex is meant to be natural but for her is now mechanical (pistons) and therefore pointless. The part about burying her body with the others and wanting to save her in the time machine is as many people have already said, a reference to Anne Frank which are frequent on Aeroplane. The final part is taken from an unreleased song about conjoned twins in a forest, I think, it was in an interview he did. It's meant to be about how they will have to die together, and their intense emotional connection as a result of the condition creates the lines. All in all, one of the most haunting and beautifully constructed NMH songs in existence. My interpretation may not be spot on, but it's what it comes across like to me :) |

| Neutral Milk Hotel – Candy Coated Dream Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
this is the first NMH song i heard, and i fell in love from here. the idea of a "candy coated dream" suggests that he's romanticising aspects of his life, to make them seem more appealing and to ignore the less desirable things "cracks that follow you and me" in favour of the sweeter and simpler images "toy guitar that's out of tune/eyes fixed on morning-time cartoons" perhaps the narration is on about romanticising childhood as the first commenter said, and the later parts "will you kiss my child/as she is dancing now" and "the cracks that follow you and me" are about how now he's older and knows he didn't have the best past he wants to provide that for his family and lover because his past are the cracks that follow him and threaten to repeat themselves? i'm not sure, but it is a lovely song. :) |

| She Wants Revenge – Written In Blood Lyrics | 17 years ago |

The lyrics posted aren't entirely correct, but anyway: I agree with the idea of the most simple interpretation-the woman is about to get married and has a moment of weakness, but the man is delusional because all his previous relationships have failed or been meaningless anyway. The idea of being "on the way to the wedding, dressed in black" is the union of love and death, and also i think represents how to this woman this is her burying all her past indiscretions and so on, and telling him to keep his eyes "on the road" indicates he's trying to stop the wedding, by driving her down another path with him which she doesn't really want, which also explains the offer "...till one of us dies" as in wedding vows, which she rejects. the video is, i think, very good but not representative of the lyrics particularly. :) |

| Neutral Milk Hotel – Naomi Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
One of my favourite NMH songs. I think the lyrics and the melody kind of create opposite images; the lyrics especially at the start imply a sort of creepy side to it but the melody that they're set to makes it feel quite reverent, admiring and sorry that she has gone, for whatever reason. The part about "watching Naomi, full bloom" I think is about that she could be so much more than she is, but nobody knows who she is and he wants everyone to realise how amazing she is to him, because if she could "soon explode into one billion tastes and tunes" then she could be appreciated as he appreciates her. The third part is one of my favourites: "I'm tasting Naomi's perfume It tastes like shit and I must say" I think is about how perhaps she isn't the most perfect person, he doesn't love EVERYTHING about her but that doesn't matter to him because he still wants to be one of her lovers, along with the other "one billion"-and he could, but she doesn't see his love for her in full and so just "comes and goes most afternoons". Really, NMH songs are all about love in whatever form, and in this one it's more about how whatever she is, he loves her but she's moved on now and all he can do is admire her from far away. The angel lines I think refer to the idea that she could be polished and perfected, but since she "cries" she obviously is happy in herself as she is. I'm not sure, it's just how I see it. Beautiful song, in all. :) |

| The Scene Aesthetic – Boats and Birds Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Is it sad this song makes me cry? It does. To me, it means loving people enough to let them go but wanting desperately to protect them. I'm probably way off, but yeah. It does to me. The Scene Aesthetic are love. |

| Bright Eyes – Haligh, Haligh, a Lie, Haligh Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| You can really feel that he knows how it feels when he sings this one. It sounds like his friend's rang him up to say his girlfriend is cheating on him and he's angry because she always questioned his fidelity and he was always faithful. It's such a sad song and when he says about the 'pleasure that my sadness brings' it sounds a little bit like self harm but I'm not 100% on that...anyway this is a amazing song, Conor really puts his point across :) | |
| Bright Eyes – At the Bottom of Everything Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I really like this one and this is how I see it: The whole song is about taking chances in life and the woman is unsure and scared of the future and stepping outside the box but the man is calm and relaxed because he is happy with his life and what is to come after life. When she asks 'where are we going' she is actually trying to ask 'what happens now' because she doesn't know what will happen if the plane crashes and she dies. The man tells her that she has to do whatever she wants to do or she'll never be happy with herself in the life after we go and it might not seem that bad to die if she lives her life to the max. Basically it's about death and fulfilling your life before you go so you feel happy with yourself. Then death doesn't seem bad. On the whole, one of Conor's best songs. |
