I disagree that weed has little to no bad effects on health and behaviour... it has partially destroyed my social skills and makes lots of people upsettingly apathetic. I think it's titled The Irony of it All because both of his characters are making points which Mike knows are fundamentally flawed, but they're presented by the characters who believe them to be true. Hence Mike's delivery being ironic as he knows the opposite to be true. Brilliant song, a balanced stab at smoking and drinking...Skinner's case against being stoned is far more subtle, as are the drug's effects. 'Criminal' Tim's somewhat pathetic but enviably relaxed lifestyle is just as unproductive as Terry's, but he goes about it in a manner so much more admirable that I think nearly all listeners will take his side. |

Ok, fair enough. I obviously didn't watch every one of Curtis' live performances and therefore cannot be certain that he ALWAYS danced like that. Well done for pointing that one out. The point I was quite clearly making if you read the post before is that he wasn't just dancing in that manner for the purposes of this song, it was a common method he used in order to express his passion for his music on stage. Also, apologies for my earlier comment, I'm sure the poster was not in fact a "nonce". I wonder what on Earth came over me. If poster is a nonce (which a google search reveals to be a sex offender) I retract my apology, and would urge them to desist from this practise and change their damnable ways. |

I'm sure a lot of these people share my opinion that deepl music has a kind of nihilistic pull upon me, Elliott Smith, Joy Division etc. Listening to this song, especially the line "isolation pushes past self-hatred, guilt and shame to a place where suffering is just a game"was a catlayst for a rather unpleasant feeling which I wouldn't want anyone to share, Don't listen to Elliott Smith too closely, is all I'd like to pass on, if you don't have a positive outlook on life. I've forced myself to give up listening too him, because even though it's brilliant, it can make you feel like what he's describing........ I'd seen "From A Basement On The Hill" as a reference to being low even when you are/should be high (ambiguously). Maybe being at the climax of your life (at the top of the hill) but not feeling like you expected, and realising that mediocrity catches up with happiness quicker than a lot of people realise. I hope I've got my point across in all that haha |

ok just discovered this site so i'm gonna comment on some old messages as well...oh and before i forget this song is incredible I'm a HUGE libertines fan and this is my favourite...ok pete uses the term Albion both in reference to England and as the dream ship used to sail to his and Carl's fictional land of perfection and happiness: Arcadia...also I believe the 2nd chorusy bit actually says Arcadia's dream dream has all fallen through i know i'm being picky but it confused me for ages so...well anyway hope you're all better informed |
