The Pussycat Dolls – When I Grow Up Lyrics 17 years ago
It DOES sound like boobies, and I believe they want it to sound like it. They like to be a 'tease' and this is just another example of it. I mean, would it really be beyond their standards (lol)? :\ Kinda lame, but it got me to post about it, heh.

pool_shark, awesome interpretation. I think it's awesome when people really interpret a song. I love your definition of suicide romance.

The Bravery – Time Won't Let Me Go Lyrics 18 years ago
Wow. This actually really describes how I feel. Or rather, how I've been feeling for over a year now.

Especially:
Time won't let me go
Time won't let me go
If you gave me back those years
I'd do it all better I swear
Time won't let me go

If I could go back once again
I would change everything, yeah
If I could go back once again

and also...

Whenever I look back
On the best days of my life
I think I saw them all on T.V.
I am so homesick now for
Someone that I never knew
I am so homesick now for
Some place I will never be

I can really relate to this. This song is clearly about regret. It sounds to me like they wanted the childhood that's depicted by the world (mostly through the media and things like that, hence the book/movie references), but they never got it.
It's a pretty easy to interpret song. And a good one.

The Fray – Look After You Lyrics 18 years ago
UCLA Bruin, thank you for your take on this song. The song's meaning was just out of reach of understanding the lyrics clearly, your post was a lot of help. I think this song is mainly about the closeness you feel to someone (be it in a relationship, or in a family as some have mentioned).
The line "You've begun to feel like home" hit me hard when I first heard it. I heard the song on the radio and I couldn't make out most of the words, but that one line rang out clear as a bell, and the impact it had on me was incredible. No one has ever made me feel as safe and secure as I feel when I'm home. To meet someone that makes me feel as safe as I do when I'm there, when I'm at home with my immediate family, would be so powerful. It has to be one of the few lines in any that has said exactly how I feel in my heart.
I agree this song is NOT one to be thrown around lightly. There is such a rarity in finding people that can make you feel THAT loved and sure of things in your life. A lot of songs can be used in varying situations, but this one seems forbidden to all except the most meaningful and real relationships.

"You've begun to feel like home
What's mine is yours to leave or take
What's mine is yours to make your own"

Within Temptation – See Who I Am Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't know if the last lyrics are right. I'm pretty certain this is not the end are the ending lyrics. Least it sounds that way in concert and on the CD ;p. I don't think this song fits a relationship at all. I get a little irritated with everyone thinking every song is a relationship (though many are) since this really sounds like someone (and another person) trying to rise against an overwhelming power, but not in a romantic sense in the slightest. It has a more 'heroic' sound to it.

Submersed – Hollow Lyrics 18 years ago
I seen this on a kickass youtube music video (Full Metal Alchemist). I freaking love it. I just wish SOMEONE could clearly say what it means.

This line I really love:

You take, the breathe you didn't make
Whats left you did forsake

To me, it's taking everything from someone, right down to the breath they take (it gets to that point), and kind of discarded everything else that the person had (cruelly, probably, like they took what they wanted and scoff at everything else about that person).
Then:

You can make me scream internally
You can make me breathe eternally

They make you hurt, right down to the core, but you need them to survive. I kind of see it that this person is saying it bitterly, as opposed to, "They cause me a lot of pain, but I love them." More like, "You make my life Hell and make me hollow, but I need you to live" in an angry way. >_> Probably just my own personal feelings on it.

Staind – Epiphany Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song. The lyrics are good, especially the main lines, ''Cause it's always rainin' in my head...forget all the things I should have said." When I first heard this song on my stereo, it literally made me stop what I was doing so I could fully feel and hear the music. The rhythm, notes, and instruments hit you so deeply emotionally that it's almost like you're letting the song wash over you. For me, the powerful feelings and voice seemed so strong that it shook me to my core, or at least it just felt like that. I love the video too. Wonderful mood-themed colorations, art, and just as powerful. I think that reflects to the song itself, if you've seen the video. Where the man goes to the graveyard and sees a woman there, and shortly after seeing her he falls to his knees and looks at her with sadness in his eyes, like he's begging her forgiveness and he doesn't know what to do. Then she disappeers, and he stands alone in the dark graveyard and slowly leaves. It's beautiful and sad. I think this song is about regrets, and how you can't change it but you don't know where to go from there. You say you'll know what to do soon, if someone tells you because right now...you're lost in regret and 'should-haves'. You're totally isolated in your sadness, be it mourning or regrets or both, and you just don't know what to do next. I love it. Great song.

The Killers – Smile Like You Mean It Lyrics 19 years ago
I know that a LOT of people have interpreted this line, but I still don't understand:
"And someone is calling my name
From the back of the restaurant
And someone is playing a game
In the house that I grew up in
And someone will drive her around
Down the same streets that I did
On the same streets that I did"
What does that mean? The line I really want to understand better is "and someone is playing a game, in the house that I grew up in". Now, what is the singer trying to say by that line? Is he saying he's looking back at himself in a younger state, and he's just kind of reflecting and saying he knows this person, but doesn't really recognize him as himself?

Chris Isaak – Wicked Game Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't know if sexy is the right way to describe the lyrics, but it's the closest thing I can think of. The voice certainly is what some may describe as being sexy. What I like about the lyrics is that they aren't blatant filth, or cheap. They are what truly sexy lyrics are. They're gorgeous. And good God, his voice is magnificent. Yeah the way he says, 'No, i....don't wanna fall in love" hits you right down to your soul in a sort of beautiful way because his voice is so velvety and faintly mournful. Unbelievable. THIS is what people trying to write and sing an alluring and sensuous song should learn from. It's classy and smooth, which makes it sexy.

Shinedown – All I Ever Wanted Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't think it necessarily has to be about a vampire, although I think that interpretation (the way is was described here) is quite moving, and beautiful. The way a vampire would want a normal life and everything, that's a very touching interpretation. I like it, really.

I lie here alone and wonder why
That I come alive, just before I half to hide.

I think it could be just a regular person who is living a life they're not happy with (due to bad descisions), but perhaps everytime they try to move away from it, the fear of the unknown, the new, or maybe a life they once had that they no longer live, makes them step back.

Because I believe I'm losing my nerve
But could I ever do better than this

The thing about losing your nerve kind of shows their fear of going into a regular, happy way of living. The next line shows their own self-doubt in themselves. It could be because they've always lived this way and they don't know if they can 'do better than this', or they tried to live that way and failed, and they don't think they'll ever be good enough for a normal life.

Because all I ever wanted was a place to call my home
To shelter me when I am there and to miss me when I'm gone
All I ever wanted was a place to call my own
Where stars may dance and sun still shines and the storms feel free to roam

Daydreaming about what they want. They want someone to care about them and, of course, miss them when they're gone. A place to call your own not only means a home, but people to care about him and just the feeling of belonging. Not belonging and being accepted by everyone, but by someone.

Not sure what the next lines mean. Maybe it means he listens to what other people think of him, but he's not sure if he's going to listen to their judgements and motivate himself to do something or just stay where he is.

If there's a way to a remedy then lead me straight to it
If there's a path or a door I missed , then show me now, show me this

Very simple. He's saying that he'll take any option or a hint of what to do to get him to the life he covets. If there is something he hasn't thought of, he's hoping someone could show him that.

feel free when I am gone

Maybe gone from the life he is currently leading. He just wants to be free, and he'll feel this way if he can break away.

Loreena McKennitt – Dicken's Dublin(The Palace) Lyrics 19 years ago
Home is very close for me; it means a lot for me, because I really need it for my haven, or I'm completely lost. This song is one of my favorites. I like the ending lyrics about the bells; it's like she has to find some place to be her home (the bell tower), and as the bell rings, she's dreaming of the home she'll have one day, but for now, she calls the bell tower home. Beautiful. I totally picture a young woman wearing sligthly raggedy clothing, curled up in a doorway thinking about her life and what she has to do (like huddle in doorways, going home with the lamp lighter, begging for things), and she's daydreaming of the great future she'll have. It's a very beautiful song, with lovely images. I love it.

Evanescence – Even In Death Lyrics 19 years ago
Eh, once you hear about the story behind it, it's a pretty creepy. I like Evanescene and all, but...just a little too weird for my blood. Digging up a body and keeping it...I've just heard one too many real-life stories on that to think this song is sweet. This song is a major 'miss' for me, but I'm glad others like it.

Loreena McKennitt – The Highwayman Lyrics 20 years ago
Skybluepoet, that's how I feel. I'm absolutely obsessed with someone loving somebody as deeply Bess and The Highwayman loved each other. I am not mad at the highwayman. He was enraged to hear what they did, and he wanted revenge immediately for what they did to her. He just acted out in rage, and unfortunately had very little control over it, and he...overreacted. That's the best word. He's justified, but he was reckless. And those men shooting him down like that was so horrible. Ugh, I wish the Highwayman had suceeded and gotten revenge on them. Tragic song.

"Suddenly, I knew that you'd have to go.
Your world was not mine, your eyes told me so.
Yet it was there I felt the crossroads of time
and I wondered why."
God, how beautiful is that? That reminds me of my favorite movie of all time, when (to make a long story short, I won't go into detail) someone the main character loved very deeply could no longer be with them for many reasons. Anyways, at the end of that movie, that person dies, and the main character found herself crying and mourning for him anyways. Everytime I watch that movie, it makes me think of that set of lyrics in that song. Awesome movie, awesome song.

Loreena McKennitt – Dante's Prayer Lyrics 20 years ago
...I'm not really sure what to think of Rinyave's comment sits I just find it....very odd and nothing to do with the song. Anywho, I love this song.

When the dark night seems endless
Please remember me

That is so sad and beautiful. It almost seems like she's 'gone', but whoever she's speaking to, it's like she's telling them that when you feel so low and the "when the dark night seemed endless", to please, please think about them, like a source of comfort and peace, and showing respect for them too. Gorgeous lyrics.
It sounds like someone afraid of death, and they are sincerely asking someone (I think it's someone they love dearly, because they say 'please remember me' like they want to serve as someone to think of when they are alone), to take away their fears of dying, and to remember them fondly. It's like, 'just help me through this, and please, don't forget me. Think of me when the night seems too long and sad'. Beautiful. So underrated.

Coldplay – Fix You Lyrics 20 years ago
I think the 'ignite you bones' part means to make that person feel 'alive again, and feel passionate about life'. It's basically making someone sort of want to live, and ignite that feeling within them. And that's very sad to hear about your daughter, Jodiem. :(

Sarah McLachlan – Elsewhere Lyrics 20 years ago
I never really saw the 'homosexual' point of view of this song. It seems basically someone finding peace in something and absolutely no one can understand, but they do. 'Heaven to no one else but me'. It's just about someone finding solace in something that others don't quite understand, but it makes them happy. And that's all that matters. They seem to be living life not so much for themselves, but they find a little peace in it all by some means that isn't perfect. But they alone find comfort in it. Good song for people who need an 'escape' once in a while. I think everyone does, come to think of it.

Colin Hay – I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You Lyrics 20 years ago
...it's so sad, and sweet. It's clearly about someone who has lost somebody they were in love with and...well, the title kind of says it all. It could be losing someone because they died, or they're no longer together because of a breakup, but it doesn't really matter. It's just about losing someone you love.
'But I don't want you thinking I don't get asked to dinner
'Cause I'm here to say that I sometimes do
Even though I may soon feel the touch of love
I just don't think I'll ever get over you'
'If I lived 'til I was 102
I just don't think I'll ever get over you '
I love the way he sings this. His life is going back to normal, he does the things he used to do, and he might even fall in love again...but no matter what, he'll never forget about that on person. Even time won't stop him. He's not bitter, he's calm and content, but always a little melancholy. It's sweet, and sad. It's honesty, plain and simple.

Natalie Merchant – Thick As Thieves Lyrics 20 years ago
Not many people said much about this one...huh. This is how I see it:
Okay, I think the first few set of lyrics refers more to Adam and Eve. They took the forbidden fruit, which destroyed everything. So the people say is basically how the story is told by everyone, and in the bible, and how the price we paid was being kicked out of the Garden of Eden.
Down the path of shame and let us dare
To bite the hand that fed us
(I think this is reference to the eating of the forbidden apple, how God 'let them dare' and choose the life they wanted and they chose to eat the apple and bit the that hand that fed them by doing so.)
Fairy tale, the moral end
Wheel of fortune, never turns again
Never turns again
(They had one chance in the garden, but they threw it all away, and that was it. They will never have the chance again. Humans act this way often with things, and it is often the moral end.)
'The worst of it has come and gone…'
(I think these set of lyrics refers to how it's the end of time, and we have fought constantly, and the 'doomsday' is gone now, and everything is over. We have fought our last battle, in whatever way. The lyrics travel from the beginning of time's mistakes to the end of time's mistakes.
Their last retreat is moving slow
They burn their bridges as they go
(They've destroyed so much, there is little refuge to go to anymore. Maybe by burning bridges they're biting the hand that fed them again, and running from all that they should have learned from past actions.)
'Rocked again by indecision' could mean that they were at a lost what to do, so we did what we always automatically do, and fought. We apparently expected that to have solved our indecision, and what we were left with was ash and smoke. Everything destroyed, and nothing solved.
'The wicked king'. I think this is just how the tyrant realizes how we have destroyed everything, and now they are all remorseful and calling a truce with this enemies and saying live and let live, but only until the next time of crisis, and then the tyrant arises again and everything goes back to normal.
I've come tonight
I've come to know
The way we are the way we'll go
(This is simply the narrator referencing to everything she's learned from the history of man.)
I've come to you in restless sleep
Were all your dreams turned bitter sweet
With voodoo doll philosophies
Day gloy holy trinities
(I think she's asking, whoever she's speaking to, if they loss all their hopes and dreams because of the 'philosophies' and mythologies they've heard of)
Follow deep in trance
Lost in a catatonic dance
Know no future
Damn the past
Blind war, ecstatic
To save their lives
(We're just looking out for ourselves again. We're in a blind war, because we never learn, and only go in circles.)
Overall, I think it's the foolishness of men and how we are destroying ourselves by falling the same steps over and over. Great song.

Natalie Merchant – Ophelia Lyrics 20 years ago
Hmm, I have no idea what this song means. Lol, I just have my favorite lyrics in this song. My favorite one being about a mother 'she'd sympathize, and dry your eyes, and help you to forget', simply because the lyrics are extremely beautiful and sweet, and I love the way she sings them...and her voice seems to become faint and sad when she says, "...and help you to forget' again.
My interpretation: The song is describing the type of woman this Ophelia was in different ways, and in terms of different eras. In some ways, she was moral and could practically be compared to a nun, opinionated and compared to a suffragette, a knock-out beauty that the world would have fallen in love with like she were a famous celebrity, powerful in the sense of a demigoddess (the way she stood out, and seemed so strong and perfect), dangerous and risky that she could have the been the husband of someone in the mafia or the likes, talented and stunning that she could have been 'a circus queen', extremely strong willed and let her voice be known that she was a "hurricane", and yet, she was a sweet mother who could comfort a sad child. She was ALL of these things, and is compared artistically to various eras in all aspects of her personality. Now, the final lyrics. God, they are so chilling when you hear them. Hauntingly beautiful, well sung by Natalie Merchant. Anyways, to me it's like someone someone's final reflection on Ophelia. She's 'gone' now, maybe emotionally or mentally, or she has truly gone insane. But I think everything that made her beautiful is gone, be it death or something that forever changed Ophelia. And now, the person who is doing all this reflecting and comparing, talks about how people (maybe themselves) 'wonder where she'd gone'. Now, she's lost in her own world. Perhaps she has passed on, or maybe she is somehow gone inside for whatever reason, and the author makes one final comparison: To Ophelia, of Shakespeare. The beautiful, strong, opinionated, strong-willed, talented, wild, moral, and loving mother Ophelia is gone. She's alone now, in whatever way. I think it's someone who knew her, maybe her whole life, maybe from hearing stories about her, or seeing her every once in a while telling the Ophelia they knew, and her final demise. It could even be the child, because of the final lines of 'and help you to forget' are repeated, like she knew her best this way. Absolutely beautiful.
